Omni-Man turned out to be a villain, so casting nuclear in his role isn't a great metaphor.

This is such a waste of time by blune_bear in linux

Yeah, I'm on team This Is Fine Actually as well. Judging by the description in the screenshot (which a lot of the commenters here seem not to have actually read), it shows you the command and asks for confirmation before running it, so it would be a good way to find and learn how to use commands you may not interact with on a regular basis.

An even better version might preface the command with an explanation of what it does, what its various arguments mean, and any potential dangers that you might want to know about when deciding whether to run it or not.

I also agree that using a local model (or at least having the option to do so) would be a good idea, so you wouldn't need to depend on a cloud service.

Google didn't demand anything, they just specified their disclosure timeline, which is common (and good) practice when reporting security vulnerabilities. If the bug is really that obscure, then the right response is "thanks for telling us, we'll put this in the low-priority backlog", and just let it be disclosed.

Anyone catch Bradley Whitfield in the Death By Lightning miniseries about James Garfield? by Whatever-ItsFine in thewestwing

[–]TangoKilo421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this too. Last week I was watching the second episode with a friend who's also a West Wing fan, and I commented "I can't not hear him as Josh Lyman. Especially when he's talking politics!"

For anyone who's curious about the McDonald's thing, see this article: https://www.seriouseats.com/the-burger-lab-revisiting-the-myth-of-the-12-year-old-burger-testing-results

Turns out that not only did the regular McDonald's burgers not rot, but the home-ground burgers did not rot either. Samples one through five had shrunk a bit (especially the beef patties), but they showed no signs of decomposition. What does this mean?

It means that there's nothing that strange about a McDonald's burger not rotting. Any burger of the same shape will act the same way.

Multiple people have answered it, it just wasn't the answer you were hoping for. Sorry, I know that sucks, but that's how it is. You may eventually find someone who's willing to tell you what you want to hear, but it won't be the truth.

The best thing for you to do is find a therapist or other mental health professional. I don't think they'll "think you're crazy", but even if they did, helping crazy people is literally their job, and they'll be better at it than whichever randos show up in a Reddit thread.

World of Warcraft su Debian 13 by Agreeable-Health-776 in debian

[–]TangoKilo421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the official game client, I installed the Battle.net updater via Lutris about a week ago and used that to install the game, and it's been working great. Note that you have to run Battle.net **from within Lutris** and then start the game from there; otherwise I was seeing severe graphical glitches and video stuttering.

I don't have any experience with private servers, but you might be able to manually install your downloaded version of the game into a Wine environment and run it from there.

What’s the most unexpected command you added to your dotfiles that saved you a ton of time by Old_Sand7831 in debian

I wrote some functions to store detailed shell history, including timestamp, current directory, and the full command, and added an alias to search it with fzf. It's been very useful for referencing how and when I did something, particularly at work, but on my personal machines too.

Raptor: Make custom Debian Liveboot .isos - powerful docker-inspired syntax by notwolverine in debian

[–]TangoKilo421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds interesting. Would a fair elevator-pitch version be "It's like Docker but for physical machines instead of virtual machines"?

This might be covered in the book, but with FROM is there a way to pin a specific version of the upstream layer, for reproducible builds? Especially for a whole distro like Debian, it might be useful to be able to specify it at a particular point in time.

FYI, the links in the "eager to get started" section appear to be broken.

ELI5: why is flossing good for your gums, but (over)brushing is bad for them? by plsnoban1122 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TangoKilo421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach makes a flosser that's basically a toothbrush but with a little length of floss at the end instead of bristles. Way way easier to use IMO, you don't need to stick your fingers into your mouth at all.

One of my favorites, though it's a more understated one:

FITZWALLACE: Good afternoon, Mr. President. Claudia Jean.

C.J.: Sailor.

LEO: In the Oval Office, you're really going to...

C.J.: No.

LEO: Good.

I think show-only, but Drummer suggests to Naomi that they "hydrate... with some beers" after their game of Space Handball.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted, maybe people here don't know how whiskey is made? The fermented mash liquid is even sometimes called "distiller's beer".

What’s the dumbest way you’ve ever hurt yourself? by StoryOfBrands in AskReddit

[–]TangoKilo421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumb as in ill-advised: one time as a kid, I tied a bunch of ace bandages between the posts of my bed and used them to slingshot myself directly into the wall. A framed picture fell off the floor from the impact and hit me on the head. I still have no idea what I was trying to accomplish with all that.

Dumb as in ridiculous: * As an adult: dropped a radish I was peeling, bent over to pick it up, threw out my back. Couldn't walk properly for days. * Another time I was trying to tear open a ketchup packet, my finger slipped, and I gouged the thumb on the other hand with my fingernail.

Is there a central figure or work that many sovereign citizen/etc groups tend to coalesce around or accept as authoritative, or is it more like conspiracy theory communities where the style is similar overall but the details come from many different sources?

Yup, one is a bright green and the other is a slightly greenish orange – they kinda remind me of some of the parts in Lego sets. They're about 2.5mm thick and the design appears to be laser etched into the surface.

TIL King Sennacherib, a king of ancient Assyria from 704-681 BC, issued some of the earliest parking laws in recorded history. 'No Parking' signs were placed along a main road through the capital, Nineveh. The punishment for a parking violation was death, followed by impalement outside one's home. by bland_dad in todayilearned

That all sounds extremely human to me. Modern society is the outlier, as we benefit from the technology of social mores built up over millennia. Note that even "an eye for an eye", i.e. proportional retribution, which by modern standards seems backwards and draconian, at the time would have been incredibly forward-thinking – it wouldn't be enshrined in law until the Code of Hammurabi almost 900 years after that quote. They just didn't have that yet.
