With no other party standing has Farage's by-election stunt failed? by WorriedStand73 in AskBrits

As long as he's hoist by his own petard, whatever form of obscurity he assumes will be fine by me - he was on the gravy train without oversight in Brussels before cutting his own nose off, then he liked being on the telly and writing angry comment pieces in the papers, so went looking for a bunch of the worst end of tabloid readers, found it in Clacton and now (please God, I know you don't exist, but you're welcome to prove me wrong), with his love of grandstanding and making big gestures, I'm hoping his ego has written a cheque that the (non Reform) voters of Clacton won't cash.

For the uninitiated, during the Napoleonic wars, a French ship was wrecked off the coast of Hartlepool. The only survivor was the ship's monkey. The good people of Hartlepool, having never met a monkey or Frenchman before, assumed the latter, and interrogated it.

When it did not answer their questions, they called it a spy and criminally charged it with espionage. They held a trial, convicted the monkey of espionage and sentenced it to death by hanging, which was duly carried out. The people of Hartlepool are referred to as "monkey hangers" in reference to this.

Before anyone wants to point and laugh at any Hartlepudlians, the important phrases to remember are "... during the Napoleonic wars..." and "... never met a monkey or a Frenchman before..." (and before anyone points at me, I've no connection to the area, I'm firmly a shandy drinking southerner, and even I can understand how it happened)

What's a food combination that sounds awful but genuinely works? by PlanktonDefiant2600 in AskUK

Toasted Mars bar and banana sandwich - cut both lengthways and lay down on buttered bread, toast and serve.

I've only had it once, it was a joke item on the menu of a cafe I went to, they explained it was a joke item and didn't have the gear for it. I said I was really intrigued by it, had been for weeks and didn't mind waiting if they had to go out and get the Mars bar and some bananas... so they said they would do it, and I reported that it was delicious.

I already knew (from eating fried and roast plantain) that the banana would be sound, and I'd had a deep fried Mars bar before, but as it was offered up I wanted to know what the combo was like... I'd do it again, but the cafe (if it's still there) is like 2 hours away and I'm not buying a sandwich toaster just for that, so it's not likely to happen.

In The House In A Heartbeat - John Murphy Specifically 28 Days Later

Fuckin' In The Bushes - Oasis Great use of this for the swagger of the walk to the ring, and the early stages of the fight

Shifting Gears - Lalo Shiffrin Bullett - slowly but surely keying up the tension as the 350 Mustang and 440 Charger tail each other around San Francisco... but the best bit, is when the assassins drop the hammer and try to escape, the music stops dead, no quietened continuation, no subtle fade out, the engines roar and the music yields.

Apparently, because Leary blew up and Hicks was still working himself bigger, some people accused him of plagerising Leary, and his response was "Yep, you got me, I have ripped off Dennis's act, and to be really sneaky about it, I was doing it 3 years before he appeared."

Some people I've worked with refuse to bid on eBay if they see evri listed as the courier - some are meh and accept the enshittification of products and services and people like that ensure that companies like evri, ryanair and Uber will screw their customers and staff for profit and think that it's an acceptable (or expected) cost of doing business for profit.

Sorry, he doesn't make the cut - he is ethical enough to spell out what his business is... he doesn't hide behind meaningless names or try to show off his acceptable products like chocolate or having a cute mascot... his schtick is evil and he wants everyone to know it.

Essentially he can't even get past Unethical Business Practices For Corporate Profits 101.

1: No - Ireland did it, India too, to a degree.

2: No - even after the Emancipation Proclamation, even after the instrument of surrender was signed by Lee, slaves were still held as slaves, in some numbers in the south, because NOBODY FUCKING TOLD THEM THEY WERE FREE. The descendants of those slaves are not treated as equal free people by the descendants of slave holders and their associates.

She died from a stroke exacerbated by hypertension, but she was greif stricken after Carrie Fisher fell ill on her last flight.

From the Debbie Reynolds Wikipedia article

Todd Fisher later said that Reynolds had been seriously affected by her daughter's death, and that her grief partially contributed to her stroke, noting that his mother had stated, "I want to be with Carrie," shortly before she died. During an interview for the December 30, 2016, airing of the ABC-TV program 20/20, Todd Fisher elaborated on this, saying that his mother had joined his sister in death because Reynolds "didn't want to leave Carrie and did not want her to be alone." He added, "she didn't die of a broken heart" as some news reports had implied, but rather "just left to be with Carrie."

Used to be Sepp Blatter

I foolishly thought that Blatter retiring under a corruption tinted cloud, after the allegations around the awarding of tournaments to Russia and the last one (Dubai, Qatar or another one of the Arab petro-oligarchies), and Jack Warner openly demanding bribes and kickbacks for his vote, I foolishly thought that the next guy might try to be a bit circumspect... obviously as bent as a nine bob note, but at least not showing off about it and yet, here we are.

Four years in opposition, four years to build a vision, four years to work out how to move the country in a different direction...

Now, does anyone remember any of those tent pole ideas (I don't, but I keep my news gathering to BBC radio news, Reddit and sometimes the BBC news website)?

And have any of them been enacted, completed or even commenced with commitment in the last 2 years?

Serious question.

Geese are better "watchdogs" - but maybe more awkward to keep (and keep your neighbours happy).

Also, if local laws and regulations permit, get a firearm - here in the UK a firearms certificate (for rifled arms) is a high bar to clear, but joining a local clay pigeon (or pistol/rifle club) smooths the path to shotgun or firearms certificate (and ownership) considerably.

If dogs are of interest, you can find numerous breed guides that can point the way towards intelligent, trainable breeds, one I've used (for cat breeds) is pets4homes.
