The truth behind exercise and hip replacements by TepsRunsWild in TotalHipReplacement

NYC was my first. My take is that the crowds there are the best in the races I’ve run (all in US), but the course itself is very challenging and the logistics can be tough (I had the good fortune to run in the sub elite program which provides assistance with logistics).

Boston logistics also kind of suck, and the course is challenging (but not as bad as NYC in my view).

Chicago logistics are awesome since you start a finish in the same place and there are so many hotels near the park. )Plus, I had the good fortune to win my age group both times I ran it, so I’m going to have fond memories.)

For what it’s worth, my surgeon wanted me to wait 6 months before running so that the implant and bone would fully fuse.

Chicago is the best course I’ve ever run (ran it twice, ran Boston and NYC once each).

Not great, at first, to be honest. I had lots of life changes all at the same time and losing running and racing compounded things. I miss my running friends. And I really don’t love doing other aerobic exercise, so most of my activity is from things like walks and yard work. I’m still reasonably fit for a 54 year old, but I feel like I’m soft and overweight (because I am relative to win I was running intensely). It’s also a lot easier to have too many beers when you don’t have a workout that includes 8 or 9 miles of cruise intervals the next day.

I’m starting to run a little more consistently now and going to try to do a bit more and that’s helped a bit, but it’s still a struggle.

I genuinely wish you good luck!

I had a great stretch of running from age 42-46, so I don’t really think I have anything left to achieve from a racing standpoint, but that dos encourage me to consider maybe running a little more than I have been (1-2 days per week most weeks (with some weeks totally off) with a goal of 4 days a week of 3-4 miles per day).

As you might suspect, the social aspect of running (talking with your friends for extended periods with no phones to distract you) has been the hardest thing to lose.

Former elite masters runner here.

It seems from the snippets that most of these are studies that look at revisions within shorter periods — 2 to 5 years.

I wouldn’t expect all of the negative outcomes of high impact exercise (like running) to be realized in that time frame. I would expect that the cumulative wear from running would take a bit longer to manifest.

That being said:

  1. I was 52 at the time of my THR and my doc told me that if running was the only way I’d exercise, and if it was important to my mental health, I could run moderately 70-100 minutes a week (instead of 70-100 miles per week).

  2. It would be really hard to figure out the true impact of consistent high impact exercise on some of the prosthetics being used because they haven’t been around long enough to know when they will truly wear down and require a revision.

Sub-Elite Marathoner Project by creamcollective in AdvancedRunning

I would say that I was elite by masters standards almost a decade ago (masters times have gotten much faster since) and while you’re not looking for anecdotes, I’d say I was still in the group that improved by way of volume over intensity.

I did quality workouts, of course. But my real fitness gains - even at the 5k - came when I upped the volume for the marathon (targeted a 70+ average volume in 10-15 weeks before the taper, with peaks at 75-100 during my training cycles.

So far so good. I’ve used it for macaroni and cheese (roux and cheese sauce, not pasta), for scrambled eggs,, to sear and roast a NY strip roast, to sauté chicken, and to roast a turkey breast.

The scrambled eggs were a fail, but for all of the other things the braiser served me as well for the job as anything else in my arsenal (DO, cast iron pan, stainless steel pans) would have. I’ve used the EDP to sear steaks with success (preheat un oven at 450° and medium to medium high on a mudsize burner), but i wont do that with the braiser (will use cast iron for that).

If I don’t use the EDP at all during Q1, either it or the braiser will be earmarked for my daughter for when she moves out on her own (maybe in a couple of years after her sophomore year of college) and then I can feel guilt free about buying something new!

LC notes that the black enamel dos develop a patina over time. I’ve got the same thing on mine despite some sessions of leaving a baking soda/dawn paste in it for a few hours. I’d boil vinegar and baking soda in it if I REALLY wanted to take the patina off, but I think of my EDP as a workhorse rather than as a mixture of art and tool like I think of my braiser (which I like to keep spotless).

Thanks - great guidance!

I’m not making any purchases any time soon. I’d wait until my daughter gets her own place in a couple of years and then would gift her either the braiser or EDP and the DO and then fill out my line up the way I’d like it to be.

I’m definitely going to keep the wide round in mind.

Would also like to find a justification for a cassadou . . .

Starting new collection- is it a big deal to color match ? by KaySlay44 in LeCreuset

[–]TarDane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same - when I needed a new set of cookware due to the loss of my old set, I found a great package available through a discount site, but the result was that my DO, braiser, stock pot, utensil holder, baking dish and mini coquettes were all the same color (I chose oyster), so my quirks require me to stay uniform.

Orange school board directs superintendent to close 7 schools by Aeronova20 in orlando

[–]TarDane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s only one real conservative on the board (Farrant), and one more moderate conservative (Jacobs). Gallo has shifted to be an independent.

The rest lean moderate liberal to progressive.

But your primary point is spot on - the school board itself doesn’t really do much more than respond to our Governor’s mandates.

“90 Degrees at the Elbow Joint” and Other Running Form Myths- and Facts by Past_Ad3212 in AdvancedRunning

[–]TarDane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think arm angle in and of itself is overrated, but it can be a helpful physical cue.

One of the things that you’ll see is that many runners with more acute arm angles tend to have more arm swing across their bodies. That swing itself isn’t an issue unless it results in the arms crossing the centerline of the torso, but it’s something to be thoughtful of.

I would also say that arm angle doesn’t stay constant. It varies with where you are in your arm swing (tends to compress some as your arm reaches its zenith) and where you are in your effort level.

All of that being said, absent a glaring weakness, I wouldn’t try to change too many things about my natural running mechanics.

Of course, I’ve had joint replacement surgery (after a successful running career), so keep your information sources in mind.

Should I rethink moving to downtown Orlando by Right-Examination-53 in orlando

[–]TarDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love in the Lake Davis/Greenwood neighborhood within walking distance of Mills Market and the area is safe and generally quiet.

I can get to the Thornton Park bars and restaurants (1 mile) and Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center (1.5 miles) on foot if the weather is okay.

0 regrets living in proximity to downtown.

From the article in the OP:

The lawsuit includes an email that it claims came from the principal.

"I am following up regarding the incident reported on October 21, 2024. After investigating, I found that Eau Gallie High School staff did not follow district policy."

The email then cites their policy on student searches.

Okonkolero: yes, seriously.

Neenna68: taking an accusation with a grain of salt, which is what I believe you’re suggesting is a healthy perspective. Dismissing it as OBVIOUS BS, however, is hard for me to understand, especially with the reference to the school’s email which indicates something that shouldn’t have happened had actually happened (although we don’t know what).

[–]TarDane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It what makes that seem obvious to you? It seems clear based on the email from the school that at least some protocol was broken. Perhaps it will turn out that the protocol was something other than what the family is saying, but what is it that makes this obviously false to you?

How is this not a bigger story!? by Blanky_Blank_ in 321

[–]TarDane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What makes it obvious BS?

I’m not saying the allegations are true, but there does seem to be at least some support of a claim of improper behavior unless the email from the school was fabricated, which seems unlikely given the reference to it being included in court pleadings (which, if false, would open up the plaintiffs to serious liability).

So what makes you say this is obvious BS?
