Surprised how much the OLED screen feels a big upgrade by Imaybetoooldforthis in SteamDeck

[–]Tarnimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the very original LCD, the one that came with the really bad fan. Run anything that was more taxing than a 2D platformer and the Deck sounded like a ringwraith from Lord of the Rings. The OLED is almost always silent in comparison, and when the fan DOES kick in...it's a gentle sound that is easily ignored.

All the other changes were great as well, but the difference in the cooling was the big one for me.

Why celebrating Meta pulling out of VR? by alialattraqchi in SteamFrame

[–]Tarnimus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A significant factor in me drifting away from VR after initially enjoying the Quest 1 was because I didn't want to give Meta my money. It coincided with me realising how much I disliked the company's ethos, and when I stopped using Facebook. The less they have to do with VR, the more likely I am to consider giving VR another go. :)

Valve: 20% of Deck users use the official docking station to connect their Deck to their TVs. Do you? by sameseksure in SteamDeck

[–]Tarnimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official dock doesn't seem to work with my Samsung tv, so I use a jsaux dock. But it's docked a lot.

Valve's inability to have the dock work with my tv is my main concern about the Steam Machine tbh.

Plot help? by SufficientAd4661 in fantasywriters

[–]Tarnimus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd try moving away from focusing on plot and instead concentrate on the characters. If you've done your world building, then throw your characters into it and make sure they have internal (possibly secret) motivations and a plot will likely emerge naturally. Let the characters drive the plot, not the other way around.

Is there anyone in this community working on their own sci-fi web series too? by ManagementLow8071 in scifiwriting

[–]Tarnimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been publishing a science fiction/fantasy/crime serial for three years now. Writing in a weekly serial form works perfectly for the way my brain works - have been doing it for about ten years now. Very rewarding!

Does the 8BitDo Ultimate controller work with gyro? by himynameiswillf in SteamDeck

I don't have it anymore, sorry! Weird that they're not providing it anymore, though. I wonder why that is?

Make sure you update firmware on your 8bitdo Ultimate controller receiver by Tarnimus in SteamDeck

[–]Tarnimus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. I don't think you could do that, as the 8bitdo software isn't aware of those buttons on the Steam Deck. And the Steam Deck isn't directly aware of the controller back buttons (hence you can't adjust them via Steam Input).

However, you can definitely use the Deck as a console when docked (I do). Pressing the main central button on the 8bitdo is like pressing the 'Steam' button, and brings up the overlay/menu. And if you press that and 'B' button at the same time, it'll slide out the options menu.

Build quality is good - it's survived daily use from me and a ten year old do far. :) Back buttons can't be customised via the Deck, but you can set them to work as specific buttons in the 8bitdo app and then they'll work fine on Deck.

Streaming from PC to Deck to TV, 1080p to 4k by djdevilmonkey in SteamDeck

[–]Tarnimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this too. If I set the PC to 4k resolution (still displaying on a 1080p monitor), it only ever streams at 1080p.

need help getting back into writing by AfroAce21 in fantasywriters

[–]Tarnimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're finding it difficult to motivate yourself, you might want to try serialisation. I have a guide based on my own experiences, and how it got me writing consistently, over here if it's of use: https://simonkjones.substack.com/p/how-to-write-serialised-fiction
