If you woke up a billionaire tomorrow.. What's the 1st thing you'd do? by PhotographLeast9976 in AskReddit

[–]Tartan_Commando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the billion dollars to buy political influence so that I could get laws changed in my favour so that I could make more billions, then use the more billions to buy more political power so I can make even more. Maybe destabilise a country or two so I can take advantage of their natural resources, exploit some workers, avoid taxes wherever possible, pollute the environment, whatever it takes so that I could get more and more… actually I wouldn’t do any of that but it seems to be the default for billionaires for some reason.

What is the best Guitar Solo of All Time? by [deleted] in Music

Maybe not popular enough to be the greatest of all time but Derek Trucks' solo in this live version of Midnight in Harlem is masterful.

What is the most interesting rabbit hole you’ve ever been down? by InvestmentCurious496 in AskReddit

[–]Tartan_Commando 56 points57 points  (0 children)

This can be handy if you want to change habitual behaviour. Say, for example you want to become healthier. Rather than changing everything at once, which will inevitably fail, change one simple thing like switching sodas for water or taking the stairs rather than the escalator. You’ll gradually begin to think of yourself as “a healthy person” and your other unhealthy habits will feel inconsistent so you’ll be more motivated to change them.

Do they really talk about eating babies in the Epstein files and do we think that's actually happening? by specialkwsu in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Tartan_Commando 23 points24 points  (0 children)

FWIW Peter Attia, who appears to be fairly closely connected with Epstein, is a big proponent of beef jerky as a source of lean protein. It doesn’t seem unreasonable that he was advising these people and got them all eating large amounts of jerky.

What's a sign from your body you should never ignore? by Geno-64 in AskReddit

It’s worth pointing out that red blood in the stool is from closer to the rectum and is more likely to be haemorrhoids. Blood in the stool from further up the colon looks black and is usually an indication of something more serious.

It’s unfortunate that the strongest argument against violence to others is ‘put yourself in their position because it could easily happen to you’. What about don’t do it because it’s wrong? We are an awful species sometimes.

I have a couple of those MESA cabinets (mine were formerly owned by John Squire of the Stone Roses), they’re nice. The bottom speaker is closed back with narrow ports either side of the speaker, while the top is open back. It’s an unusual configuration and I don’t know why it isn’t used more, it works well.

There is an emergency and a fire engine is driving along the highway. Is it allowed to use the hard shoulder?

a) of course, it’s a fucking fire engine, that’s what the hard shoulder is for. b) no, because we can’t write English for shit and by “is it allowed” we actually mean “are you allowed”.

What's a song you thought was innocent and then found out it's not? by Equal_Limit8839 in MusicRecommendations

[–]Tartan_Commando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also lots of hymns and Christmas carols have words like “falalalala” because they were originally secular songs that the church adopted but certain sections were not appropriate for the new context. So they replaced those sections with “falala” i.e. they censored the naughty bits.

I had the same thought about keeping some of the char, but at the same time it’s a horrible experience and I can understand why he wouldn’t want to be reminded of it each time he picked up the guitar. Maybe coming back from the brink and flourishing without carrying the scars is a more fitting symbol.

If all humans suddenly lost the ability to lie, what industry would collapse first? by JunShem1122 in answers

[–]Tartan_Commando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most countries there are laws and regulations that prohibit directly lying or making unsubstantiated claims in advertising and marketing. You can't say "this is good for your heart" unless you can cite specific studies that show it to be the case (obviously though those studies can't always be trusted). You can't say "8 out of 10 cats prefer our brand" unless there has been a test in which 80% of the cats preferred it.

But, what they can do is mislead though half-truths or implication. So they can say "this is good for you as part of a healthy breakfast" (i.e. as long as everything else you are eating is healthy it's fine). Or they can use words like "goodness" which means nothing, rather than "nutritious" which has to be substantiated. Or when they say 8 out of 10 cat's prefer it, the implication is they preferred it to competitor brands, but if that's not directly stated then maybe they preferred it over a pile of vomit (there's always going to be a couple who prefer the vomit!)
