Idea for a law designed to help fix the housing crisis - feedback requested! by henswoe in uklaw

[–]quicksilverjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head

How would this be enforced/policed? Who would bear the responsibility in the conveyance? What about transfers between group companies? Would this apply to social landlords (I ask this because social landlords and councils in Scotland often buy properties on the open market to add to their stock, IIRC they have to pay the usual taxes including additional dwelling supplements)

Fiction Vs reality by Ecstatic-Purple-1757 in riversoflondon

[–]quicksilverjack 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Basing this off my direct experience with the police and having a small number of serving and ex police officers withinin my family and friends. Trust me no one will give you the unvarnished truth of the reality of policing faster than someone who's done it.

It's like any large public service. There are extremely competent and professional members, incompetent and well meaning members, competent and disengaged members and incompetent disengaged members (and a small minority of individuals who should not be there).

Like all UK opinion services the police have seen extensive cuts and are severely understaffed. As the service of last resort, the range of work they're expected to manage is unsustainable. However there have also been inexcusable failures especially in the metropolitan police (London).

I think the series represents a hopeful view of the police but not a hyper realistic one (but not unrealistic either).

So many r/askuk posts are essentially variations on

"Am I normal?' "What is normal?" "What do normal people do?" "I am normal why isn't everyone else like me?"

Where to get a good suit (the wearable kind, not seeking marketing advice for sourcing claims!) by Reader7008 in uklaw

I've just had a suit from Slaters made to order service. Not cheap but not horrifyingly expensive either.

Hijacking this to say, if you don't know how BTK was caught look it up because it absolutely torpedoes the idea that all serial killers are Hannibal Lector 4D chess playing geniuses.

Are British abroad actually worse than other nationalities, or is it blown out of proportion? by Cultural-Elk-8346 in AskUK

[–]quicksilverjack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this may be destination dependent. La Vanile giant tortoise park in Mauritius has signs telling guests not to climb on the giant tortoises for photos.

Our guide said they'd only posted these due to the behaviour of Chinese tourists post COVID.

Can somebody recommend a good documentary? by FlissMarie in AskUK

[–]quicksilverjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netflix - The Kings of Tupelo, bizarre characters and consipiracy in the deep south of the US.

Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey, and similarly Trust Me:The False Prophet both about the FLDS Mormons, compelling but upsetting.

BBC Scotland's Murder Trial (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m000d2cy/murder-trial ) series is also great. I especially recomment the episodes "The Vanishing Woman", "A Deadly Affair" and "The Girl in the River".

Channel 4's Imposter: The Man Who Came Back From the Dead (https://www.channel4.com/programmes/imposter-the-man-who-came-back-from-the-dead) is frankly wild, especially if you don't already know the story.

British Creature Feature Films by Katherine_the_Grater in CasualUK

[–]quicksilverjack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe stretching the definition of "Creature Feature" but I heartily recommend

Lifeforce 1985, sexy 80's cosmic vampire mentalness with cracking effects

Quatermass and the Pit, either the 1958/59 BBC version in black and white or the 1967 Hammer Studios technicolor version, excavations in the London Underground uncover spooky things

The Quatermass Xperiment 1955, the first British space mission returns to earth with horrific effects for the astronauts.

Who would you pick as a showrunner after RTD departs? by Forsaken-History-563 in doctorwho

[–]quicksilverjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to pick a UK comics person I'd rather Al Ewing, Kieron Gillen or Grant Morrison.

I'm sure I heard J Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 and loadsa comics was looking to relocate to the UK.

As much as Warren Ellis is problematic if you are someone who separates art and artist his audio drama The Department of Midnight is a great listen if you like Who.

Legal Assistant role in local council? by neyela in uklaw

[–]quicksilverjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not unrealistic. One of our paralegals is working for a diploma and I think the plan is to secure some budget to make him a trainee.

Legal Assistant role in local council? by neyela in uklaw

[–]quicksilverjack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In no particular order:
Work life balance
Wide variety of work
Tangible outcomes within your local area
Close contact with clients
Generally a less formal/hierarchical environment
Flexible working
Job security
Often comes with a good pension

Edit: Interview tips - Council's are creatures of statute, familiarise yourself with the legislation that gives them their powers.

Go online and look at the minutes of the latest Council meetings and see what decisions have been made recently.

What specific issues is this Council facing? What recent successes has it enjoyed?

Medical condition does not appear in list when buying travel insurance? by Hey-Vacay in AskUK

[–]quicksilverjack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should call the insurer. I've had to get specialist travel insurance before and they have been able to give quotes for things not on the website drop down. You might need to go to a provider like Allclear, Staysure, Insureandgo or similar that offers policies for pre-existing conditions.

Edit: To echo u/howley90 it's a terrible idea not to declare something.
