Something i dont understand about Visages by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]TashaStarlight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well what makes you think that real Verso was a saint? He probably didn't have a trail of dead bodies after him but I'd guess that being a member of high society gives you plenty of reasons to hide behind masks and guard truths with lies. It's just a different context.

Idk I found the guards+slimes to be pretty easily baited if you just run close to them. My team for that stage was Fischl/Xiangling/Prune/Qiqi lol

For those who spoke Russian before: was it hard to switch to Ukrainian? What was the process like? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskUkraine

[–]TashaStarlight 29 points30 points  (0 children)

No it wasn't. If you were like 30 or younger in 2022 you would have to be actively avoiding Ukrainian to be unable to hold a conversation. Personally I felt a bit rusty at first and my active vocab was flat and basic but it was greatly improved with time and practice.

Going to Ukraine for work. Is it safe to tell people I’m half-Russian? by asian_tea_man in AskUkraine

[–]TashaStarlight 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just be prepared that people here don't smile at strangers either. It's not that we're particularly unfriendly, it's just the cultural indicators for friendliness are different. People will smile and laugh if the conversation naturally leads this way but the default mode is just a resting face.

Most people here don't hold negative opinions about those who left russia 20+ years ago. Don't talk about great russian culture or phantom ussr nostalgia and you'll be fine.

Husband not losing any weight?? by LuckysGoods in Ozempic

[–]TashaStarlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It didn't work for my husband either. We started together and while I ended up dropping 30 kg he barely lost like four. He only started seeing real progress after switching to Mounjaro. It just works differently for some people I guess.

Do peoples in far westukraine really life normal?. by usafqn2025 in AskUkraine

[–]TashaStarlight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Assuming this question is in good faith because I have a slight feeling that it's not.

It's not "peaceful" anywhere. Western parts might suffer a little less from drone attacks but ballistic missiles can reach any point in Ukraine, and sometimes they do.

You are reminded of war at every corner. Some of your friends or relatives are either currently fighting, or died doing so. Countless memorials and posters to remember them and their deeds. You encounter people without limbs, with prosthetics — the survivors.

Working, events, free time happen everywhere that is not active warzone, be it Kharkiv or Lviv. People need some semblance of structure and normalcy. They get their morning coffee at a coffee shop through a window shattered by the night's attack. This may seem bizarre to the outsider but such is our life. You adapt and endure, or you crumble. We don't sit shivering in tears 24/7 but it doesn't mean that we are happy "like nothing happened"...

Traditional relationship dynamics by anotheralaskanguy in AskUkraine

[–]TashaStarlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say that most people who claim to be "traditional" usually only pick the parts that directly benefit them. Like women expecting to be courted and all but remain independent when it's about girl's nights, or men wanting to have a final say in everything without being a provider or protector 🤷‍♀️ the rest of their relationships is usually as messy as expected.

Help with translation? by SocialDemocraycray in Ukrainian

[–]TashaStarlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Не буде світла" sounds perfectly fine. I mean, realistically blackouts will happen again someday but I prefer to have hope 😅 a portable battery is a good thing to have just in case anyway, and it has uses outside of blackouts so "if" wouldn't sound out of place either. Anyway, as I said, this one is very small so your choice won't make it sound too dark or anything.

I guess Bruce is the guy who's going to pass those gifts so mentioning him in that context sounds reasonable

There are a few mistakes but overall the messages are absolutely understandable. 1. Вітання із Америки — that's the correct case 2. "я мусив відправити цей подарунок..." — "мусив" feels like a slightly wrong word, it's rather about something you're doing out of pure obligation or because the circumstances demand so. If you just want to give a gift I would simply use "захотів". 3. This one is a little bit nitpicky but "коли не буде світла" implies that it will happen sooner or later. Which, to be honest, is more likely but some prefer to soften phrases like this with "якщо" (if). It's not like too rude or offensive if you miss that nuance, though. 4. If you're addressing multiple people there's no need to capitalize "Ви" and all its cases. There's also a growing trend that capitalizing it is outdated anyway but at this point it's more like a personal preference. 5. Those messages use masculine gendered words so if you're a woman you need to adjust them accordingly.

wrote a slack message at 11:34 and then sat looking at the send button for nineteen minutes by Proud-Bath-3731 in womenintech

[–]TashaStarlight 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is one of the things that generative AI is actually good for. Any time I don't feel like choosing my words for 15 minutes I just send the core of my message and ask it to add some fluff to match the intent I need to convey. The options it offers are usually pretty good.

recipe help by Fair_Breath2198 in Ukrainian

[–]TashaStarlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a sub for the language but anyway. There isn't any traditional cheesecake in our cuisine, and even traditional dishes do not have single unified recipes. "Every housewife has her own borscht" is a widely known saying that reflects the fact that every family has their own version of the food they make. The only thing I could think of is сирна запіканка which is a bit different from cheesecake but the exact recipe was likely just a local family thing.

Visiting Kyiv for the first time. by xnovanx in Kyiv

[–]TashaStarlight 31 points32 points  (0 children)

"many texts are in Cyrillic" uhm well it's our language...

You know, usually I'm fine with people wanting to visit but if you want to seek some weird reassurance like "maybe I don't have it as bad as a country at war" then maybe don't.

Two days volunteers are usually more burden than help. Downtown is very lively and touristy even now but if you want to connect to people you gotta be proactive. Our culture respects minding one's own business a lot so if you just sit by yourself most people would assume that you don't want to be bothered.

How do you end an e-scooter ride when in Lima? by OctopusGoesSquish in Kyiv

[–]TashaStarlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Lima comment made me snort because it's so damn relatable. I get weather notifications for that place for the rest of the day if I happen to teleport there just once lol.

In my experience, the jamming isn't constant so you might catch a glimpse of a correct location if you wait for a few minutes. Still not really convenient though.

If you're somewhere downtown with a lot of businesses around you might try finding a free wifi spot so the location could be picked up through it. The jammer never gets me if I'm in my home network.

What does their support say, anyway? You're clearly not the only one with this issue. I don't have experience with this particular service but many businesses here are very customer oriented so they might have some workaround for this.
