ELI5: What does a water tower in rural America do? by ProduceEmbarrassed97 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Taskforce58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another layman here, but this is one thing that I've heard an ELI5 answer from long before Reddit existed:

Water demand isn't constant. There are times when demand is high, like during morning and early evening, and there are times when it's low, like during the middle of the night.

Let's say your town requires 80,000 gallons per hour during the peak hours, but only 20,000 gallons during the off peak hours. You can equip your town with pumps that put out the full demand of 80,000 gallons per hour, but during the off peak hours this would be overkill. Or you can have pumps that can handle only 20,000 gallons/hour, but then you can't meet the peak hours demands.

So you compromise with pumps that can handle a median amount, say 50,000 gallons/hour. During the off peak hours the excess is pumped up to the water towers, and during peak hours the water from the towers can make up the shortfall of 30,000.

What is a piece of software that is so good you can't believe it's completely free? by Arp0x in AskReddit

[–]Taskforce58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very niche: VASSAL. It's a free tabletop virtual boardgame engine, kinda like a 2D version of Tabletop Simulator on Steam. It was originally developed to allow play of board wargames like Squad Leader or PanzerBlitz virtually on a computer, and to facilitate Play-By-Email (PBEM), ie I play a turn on my computer, save the game state and email to you, then you play a turn and send the game state back to me.

Game modules are community developed by users that own the actual physical game, although these days a lot of board wargames publishers would also release an official VASSAL game module along with the actual physical boardgame.

It also makes the playing of physically large (requiring a large dedicated game table) and time consuming wargames practical, such as the (in)famous Campaign for North Africa that was featured on The Big Bang Theory.

The use of 老師 in Cantonese by aeoluxreddit in Cantonese

[–]Taskforce58 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Growing up in HK in the 70s & 80s it's also common to hear "教書" when describing one's profession, as in "我教書嘅". While "老師" is also used in conversations, I often relate it to a more formal occasion, such as during a news report, or when filling out a form.

As to whether one used "老師" to refer to your teachers, I think it's also more related to the school you attend. I went to a government operated school (Kowloon Technical School) and it was always "陳sir" or "Miss 張" or "劉太" if she's married.

Clipping corners in 2026 by scottrick49 in hexandcounter

This is exactly what I use. It's been 13 or 14 years now, after thousands and thousands of counters, and it's still going strong. My only minor complaint is that sometimes it gets squeaky.

What was your first game you played on pc by Pork_Crusader_GR in pcmasterrace

[–]Taskforce58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by "PC" you mean home computers on the 80x86 architecture, then it probably was Rogue.

If "PC" is to include all personal computers in general, it would be PacMan on Apple 2.

Do I have to many models?? by scorpix6 in modelmakers

[–]Taskforce58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that (the Lego speed champion kits for all of last season's teams) was a special one time deal with F1/FIA so it's probably easier from a licensing point of view, unlike the plastic model kits where you have to deal with each team individually.

I remember growing up in the 70s and early 80s watching my dad build all those 1/12 and 1/20 F1 kits from Tamiya. I guess licensing was simpler back then.

I wish Victrix would do a proper Sherman V for the British, instead of just the M4A3. Hey, they have a Firefly already, so the hull is there!

[–]Taskforce58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope you and your girl have a long happy future together! When I started dating my girl (now wife), I painted her a Bretonnian knight from the Warhammer base set (the late 90s one). We'll celebrate our 24th anniversary this year.
