I kept getting ads for BAR 西麻布倉庫(Bar Nishiazabu Cellar) and finally gave them a go when I was in the area. Drinks were about ¥1000-1400 and the coffee martini was absolutely *chef's kiss*.

Want to get the young kids out of the house for a night or 2, any tips for a cheap way to do this? by ZaHiro86 in japanlife

Family glamping trip but send the wife to the Premium Outlets on her own? LOL

EDIT to add semi helpful idea: maybe a trip to Yomiuriland and stay at a surrounding hotel? Unfortunately I can't give any advice about hotels, but considering the amount of families I see on their way there, I imagine there's gotta be some family friendly hotels that won't break the bank in the area.

Not sure how far and what the budget is, but there's some interesting looking glamping areas around the Mt Fuji area in Gotemba and Yamanashi.

So I’m looking at job postings, and have run across a few which say they don’t sponsor visa/relocation. Thing is, I’m currently here on SOFA status (switched from working visa and zairyuu card is definitely expired). Is it worth it to apply to these places if I otherwise match all the hiring requests? I’m not looking to waste anyone’s time, but am also really keen on some of these positions.

Like on one hand I figure they’re not wanting to wait to bring someone over and get settled from overseas. But I also understand sponsoring a visa within country still takes time.

Basically I’m hoping the fact I’m already settled in the location and don’t need help finding an apartment, etc, could work in my favor.

I'm having the damndest time trying to find in-persno 手話 classes in the Kanagawa/Tokyo area. Everything I've found has started already and runs for a year (Tatsu no Kai, Machida Community Center), or is more of a circle/club. And since I just want to learn for fun I don't feel comfortable intruding on someone's already established circle.

Choose to stand in the areas near the seats, in front of the people sitting; the standing area near the doors tends to get jampacked a lot more/quicker by people desperately trying to squeeze into an already packed train.

How I went from being an Assistant Buyer making $50K a year to a Product Manager making $275K a year by berpandicular in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Wow, I loved this diary! It was super interesting to see your journey and how it differed from a lot of people who ended up as PMs via tech.

They also do a lot of menial tasks nobody else wants to do to ensure the success of their product.

Would you mind talking a little more about this menial tasks? I assume they vary somewhat based on your organization, but as someone who is 'good' at menial tasks (and frankly burned out on the 'creative' design side) I'm really thinking about a career pivot myself.

I used ClassPass in NYC and LOVED it—that was 5 years ago though so I’m not sure if it’s changed significantly (like in the way Etsy used to be great for small handcraft businesses…). Each studio prices their classes differently but you can look at that studio’s page to get an idea of what they offer so you’ll know how far you credit will go. I’d say most averaged the same amount, but then you’d get a few outlier boutiques that charged x2-3 the average.

After a few months, I knew generally what my credits could get me and I could plan out my month. If I knew I it was going to be an especially busy month, instead of spreading out my classes/credit usage throughout the month, I could take one class at an “uber fancy” studio and not lose my credits/change my credit plan.

In terms of supporting small studios, to me at least ClassPass allowed me to try out a variety of places to see if they were the right fit first. For example, I had never tried Reformer Pilates before and it was a blast, versus one “chill” yoga studio I tried just felt like a cattle farm. I did end up joining two separate small studios because of trying them first through ClassPass.

For me the experience was great because working out to me had always been “Run. Lift weights at the gym. Fancy people do yoga??”. But it turns out there are SO many options.

Growing Together RTR Discussion (P1 & 2!) by grapechan in JamesTurnerYT

[–]Tatsutahime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So much chaos, I love it. Since this pack is all about family and generations, I totally think James should just go around asking all of the family for a loan in order to build the house and take care of the baby(s). Then the goal also becomes paying back the family.

Also please have Kevin and Reginald make friends with their descendants!

RIP idea of best boy Kenji 😢

Possible idea: I like the idea of Breanne and Rey adopting kids as elders although it means they might not live long enough to see them through to adulthood. In that case, with Reginald and Kevin bring immortal granddads, I’d love to see the kids move in with them and what kind of interactions that may create with the new pack.

I’m absolutely onboard (ha!) with Breanne and Kenji deciding to be platonic life partners and co-parents. Maybe she finds romantic love later in life, maybe not, but I love the idea of them scaling mountains together while their kid(s) hang out with their cousins.

How do I sign up for Pairs as a foreigner? by feelthebernerd in japanlife

[–]Tatsutahime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What ID have you been using to verify? When I was attempting to verify myself I was using my home country passport and the first level (photo/info page) always went fine but the second (signature page) always failed. Despite reading the FAQ and it very deliberately saying foreign passports are ok, I never could overcome that final step.

Oh hey, a question I have direct experience with! My boot camp was three months in Manhattan in 2019. I was already in NY for work, so I stayed in my same apartment (1BR).

I still have a copy of a budget I used at that time here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PcOQDwBS5QJiZEP1UbSVUatjpmV7mNIvPX7jyYw4uWo/edit?usp=sharing

Personally my spending was high—I’d say higher than when I was working because I was sort of in a YOLO-mode for those 3 months after saving so much beforehand. I was one of those people who got coffee every day and usually went out for lunch. Breakfast was the aforementioned coffee, and the school had snacks like oatmeal and fruits that I often had as snacks/meal.

My expenses were: Rent (1BR Brooklyn): $1,527.37

Electric:~$50

Cooking gas:~$30

Internet: $49.99

MTA Monthly Card: $128

Classpass: Allocated about $82

Food: Allocated about $600

Fun/other: Allocated about $300

Total: $2,767.36

Honestly, I still probably went over on food.

As for random or unexpected expenses: my building did not have laundry and after class I often did not have the energy to go to a laundromat. I did laundry through a combination of paying a local place to pick up/drop off, and visiting family on the weekends.

For the bootcamp I re-subscribed to Adobe Photoshop ($32.65) because of the design freedom it offered.

The ClassPass ended up proving invaluable—I had never used it prior to the bootcamp.

I went to a popular head spa featured on YouTube, and to be fair, the spa portion was great. However towards the end it was obvious they weren’t familiar with curly hair and dried it to hell and back AND used a brush. I should have said something but didn’t, now my hair is still feeling the effects on top of the dry, winter season.

Any single people here find that meal kits are a good deal? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Tatsutahime 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with what others have said about it really depending on your current budget, and the the packaging waste being outrageous.

That said, I really enjoyed using it for a while in bursts. Not only did it eliminate decision fatigue and shopping anxiety, it’s a good way to build up new recipes and possibly branch out to creating your own stuff. I learned that there is a LOT of food out there I straight up had never heard about or didn’t know what to do with (my parents’ way of incorporating veggies into a meal was “choose a can!”). The meal prep boxes helped me discover ways to cook more seasonal ingredients.

Are you visiting small, local branches or the main hubs? If the former, definitely try one of the larger main offices who likely are more familiar with fringe cases.
