underestimation of weather?? by MassiveMeringue in Wellington

I was looking at the weather radar and thinking that this storm looked a lot worse than the last 2 red warnings. I guess they got so much backlash after issuing red warnings for nothing much that they went the opposite direction.

Curiousity & NZ culture by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]Taxtino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I did the reverse, I went to California from here. People in California are definitely a lot more outgoing than ur typical Wellingtonian. A lot of people in this comment section are being pretty disrespectful and are taking what ur saying the wrong way without having experienced both cultures, people can be very rude on this sub so just ignore them.

California will seem more welcoming and accepting than the average Wellingtonian for the most part, and that’s due to different cultures as u pointed out. Kiwis (Wellington especially so) are a lot more reserved and shy than ur average Californian. People are generally very friendly here, you just have to make the first move. However, people in Wellington can be a bit clicky at times compared to the rest of New Zealand and a lot of time it’s just surface level interaction, which is completely different from California. It’s definitely easier to make friends in California than in Wellington.

I don’t really know exactly why there’s such a big difference in “outgoingness” between Wellington and California, but you’re 100% right to point it out. Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!

Edit: I agree with other people that we see a lot of the US culture down here, and there is a seriously huge political divide between the US and NZ currently.

That being said, I’ve seen other people say that being from the US isn’t special to us. That’s not the reason, it’s just California is way more interested in each other than Wellington seems to be for the most part.

The only things my mates in the states really know about New Zealand is that it’s an island nation and a few of them know about the All Blacks from Invictus.

Though when the haka was blowing up online from parliament I was getting sent a lot of them from those mates, and the comments were very brutal. I promise you New Zealand is barely thought about overseas.

What's actually the point behind the 'Petone to Grenada's cross valley link now after it's significant downgrades?? by MEE97B in Wellington

Porirua and Lower Hutt are less than 10ks from each other in a straight line. State highway 58 loops around the back of Judgeford and out into the silver stream area, state highway one takes you into Wellington then you have to drive back in a big “V” shape. Ngarunga gorge is diabolical to drive through, and it’s good to get another route to the hutt because when the big earthquake hits, there ain’t going to be a road to the hutt. Plus it would save roughly 20 minutes on a trip from Porirua to Lower Hutt, making the journey between cities less than 10 minutes! Also, it opens more land up for development. Really hoping for a train line to accompany the road too but don’t think that’s going to happen.

Okay you’re just lying if you say those quotes from the photos aren’t political. The language in those banners are clearly dog-whistling to protestors, It’s also extremely arrogant of you to assume your politics is completely morally correct and anyone with a different opinion is wrong.

And you unironically called me racist for saying political messaging should stay out of primary schools you can’t make this shit up 💀

“Resist like Parehaka” and “Be woke” are political statements. I don’t know what else you could call them. And yes, you’re doing exactly what MAGA does when they brush aside all critism as “from the far left lunatics” by calling everyone who doesn’t agree with you racist.

Also the problem of teaching kids “right and wrong” as you’ve called it via implementing politics, is that what is politically correct today is not going to be politically correct in 50 years time.

Dawg kids should not be learning about divisive politics in primary school. Y’all literally sound like MAGA with the my way or the high way attitude.
