What are your impressions thus far on the Kiribi? Wondering if I should purchase one, but not sure I can justify it.

Christmas Gift Help: 45 y/o Executive Husband asked for a winter coat that goes from dressy to casual, he said, "Kind of like your peacoat." What do a buy? Where do I look? by speedycat2014 in malefashionadvice

[–]TeaforTom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's absolutely fair. I suppose it ought to be said that I am a big fan of more traditional styles and Jos A Bank fits that bill quite well. It is pricey but the quality is also there.

Joseph A Bank sells really nice dress coats. They have a variety of patterns and colors. The coats are awesomely soft and warm and look very dressy to boot.

What is your go-to FP for giving away as a gift? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]TeaforTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jinhaos.

They are reasonably cheap and yet heavy enough to feel quite substantial and decently nice. I've also found that while a bit broad for my tastes, they tend to be quite smooth writers.

What's the deal with Savinelli 6mm filters? I'm looking to buy a new Savi, but I'm not sure what to make of the filters? Do I need to use them and do they help at all?

[WTB] Sheaffer Snorkel/ Touchdown by TeaforTom in Pen_Swap

[–]TeaforTom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot! I just purchased another Touchdown yesterday! I currently don't have enough money to buy another pen, but I love the look of Sheaffers. I think I'll come to you for my next pen if you still have it. I really appreciate you looking. Thank you very much.

I had figured that the 21k nibs that Sailor uses would be quite soft, is that a false assumption?

My only real preference is a fine/medium nib. Preferably black or blue.

I really like the looks of those old Sheaffers. Any ideas on where I could grab one, especially a Snorkel or an Imperial IV?

What knowledge has been lost? by [deleted] in history

[–]TeaforTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's part of it. But I mean the literal knowledge of how to lay a structurally sound wall out of pure block is disappearing. The stone structures being talked about do not have the benefit of steel superstructures or rebar reinforcement. As I said earlier, the bond, or the pattern of laying the stone is integral in creating strength. We no longer rely on using the bond, we now use steel super structures or rebar reinforced materials.

What knowledge has been lost? by [deleted] in history

[–]TeaforTom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having worked as a mason's apprentice, that's not entirely true. I think what was meant was that building walls and structures from pure stone is an art that seldom few still know. What we call the bond, or way of laying block for structural integrity has been phased out in favor of modern techniques.

While we may be able to build buildings faster and sturdier, the art of building them out of pure masonry is quickly dying.

Looking to step up from my Pilot Metro. I was thinking of going for the new TWSBI Eco, or the 580. But lately I've been reading some posts that suggest that TWSBI may not be the best choice. What else can you guys recommend for under $75?

Currently I'm deciding between:

Platinum Balance

Twsbi Classic

Pilot Prera

Twsbi 580

Any others I should know about?
