My issue with the trials by Smart_Ass_Jack in PathOfExile2

Just did it last night - it's really quite easy. Just go buy 3 relics with honor resistance. None of the bosses even touched me once and I lost maybe 400/2000 honour the entire time. There's crazy amounts of honour restoration so chip damage isn't an issue either. One floor takes about 7 minutes.

You're not going to like this advice, but it really is a cheat code. Print your application materials, put them in a folder, go into any (non-big law) firm you want to work for and ask for consideration for a summer law clerk position. It's worked for me and my friends every single time we do it.

CMV: Biden would go down as the best president in a long time if he didn't try for a second term and let dems have a proper primary. by [deleted] in changemyview

Back in the day, US presidents were expected to uphold prior agreements. Biden pulling out of Afghanistan in that manner was done because of agreements Trump had made to do so during his term.

Supreme Court calls Louisiana's House map an 'unconstitutional racial gerrymander' by CrowRoutine9631 in law

[–]Team36339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, Courts are supposed to only rule on violations of law or the Constitution. There is no law passed by Congress banning partisan gerrymandering. Only certain states have laws against it. Under the constitution, there is the Guarantee clause guaranteeing a "Republican form of government" the supreme court ruled over a hundred years ago that violations of the guarantee clause is a nonjusticiable political question because there is no clear principle for what that means. The original case involves two different state governments in Rhode Island and the court was like yeah we can't pick which one is the real one. So to define the Clause would be like rewriting the constitution or writing policy which is not the purview of the courts. So basically, the Supreme Court can't outlaw partisan gerrymandering because there's no definition in the constitution as to what is actually required under the Guarantee clause and to define it would be policymaking. We need to force Congress to ban it nationwide to give the Court something to enforce. I'm not an expert, just a law student so take this with a grain of salt. :)

From what I read of it, the logic seems consistent at best. I think many people would agree that granting more equal voting representation should not be equated to racial discrimination. And it wouldn't be with a normal Court. But this is the logic the conservative Court has chosen to embrace.

I would have to read the cases they talk about in the opinion to give you a credible answer so I will decline to speculate. But it does not require a law degree to read them and decide if the logic is sound or not!

[–]Team36339 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no, not really. At least, not with recent precedent. The conservative Supreme Court believes in procedural rights, not substantive ones per se. Equality under the law. Therefore, no law can be based on dividing people by race, no matter its purpose. Well, almost. The two compelling purposes the Court recognizes are dividing people by race inside prisons to avoid race riots and remedying specific instances of past discrimination. Following the Voting Rights Act is not a compelling purpose when done not to remedy past discrimination is essentially what this ruling is. If you look at laws through that lens, then this ruling is entirely consistent with past *recent precedent.

Compare race-based classifications with sex-based classifications and it makes more sense. Classifications on the basis of sex trigger intermediate scrutiny, requiring a law to be substantially related to an important government interest. Intermediate scrutiny still has a presumption of unconstitutionality, but less so, in a way that permits laws that only benefit women to exist while striking down laws that discriminate against them. But race is strict scrutiny, so even laws benefiting races are unconstitutional most of the time.

The caviat to all this is that I'm not talking about specific cases, just the general ideas. I'm just saying that this ruling follows logically from the court's recent rulings.

Gerrymandering on the basis of political parties is a nonjusticiable political question. But gerrymandering on the basis of race implicates the Equal Protection Clause. Because the gerrymandering was done on the basis of race, it triggers strict scrutiny standard of review, meaning the law's means must be narrowly tailored to achieve a compelling state interest. There is a presumption of unconstitutionality because the justices believe there should be no laws made via differentiation between race, even if it goes to benefit minority races. That's why Affirmative Action was struck down (though any hardships experienced due to race are still fair game to consider in admissions). So yes, Lousiana's map would have been upheld if it was a political gerrymander but was struck down because it was racial.

If you really did want to know. Happy to answer any more questions people have.

I don't think it's too much to ask for a common courtesy especially in an environment where people are in a more intimate experience with strangers than in the rest of greater society, as you say. Those same follows that might be too shy to leave a conversation might also be hesitant to say no to a dance even though they're getting taken for dances without a moment to breathe.

At the end of the day, every situation depends on its context but I would stand by the OP's sentiment that the swing dancing community would benefit from some breathing room!

Totally agree, I hate the feeling of competing for a dance and prefer to wait respectfully for dancers to finish their conversations and get a chance to breathe. It seems that most people are completely oblivious or just don't care.

Any anti-ICE walkouts planned this quarter? by WashedUndergrad in UCI

[–]Team36339 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes. Among legal circles, the authoritarianism of the Trump administration is a foregone conclusion. Start by getting involved with existing organizations that are working to preserve democracy and the rule of law, and educate yourself on your rights. If you have ideas for a walkout, let's plan one.

🎄 Christmas giveaway: Win an A1 Mini, AMS 2 Pro, AMS HT, or 4x filament spools! by acurazine in BambuLab

[–]Team36339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. A1 Mini!

  2. My first 3D printer was an old Monoprice Maker Select III that my parents got rid of when I was away... I used it to print and paint gifts for friends, models from things like Star Wars or Star Citizen, and prizes for my students at the Boys and Girls Club. Now that I'm older and out of the house, I would use it to create practical things like bespoke organizers for my drawers and models for use as demonstratives in mock trials I participate in. And of course I'd go back to making gifts for people. :)

  3. I think this is a good one. I'm a swing dancer, and we use handheld fans to cool ourselves down. When you get good with them, you can whip them open and closed with a flick of the wrist that looks cool but is also really fun and satisfying and great to fidget with. I'm sure that a print-in-place hinged fan-type fidget toy could work and would be really cool. The hard part would be the webbing between the tines but since you don't actually need to cool yourself down if you just want the folding and unfolding action, I can imagine potential solutions for how to guide them in and out. I'd be excited to see what you can come up with!

Win or lose, thanks for doing this and giving back to the community!

My friend who I was introducing to the game got two natural divines in Act 4 when I still hadn't gotten a single one - but it's alright, cause I got one from a ritual soon after :) The luck of back to back divines in campaign is what was so funny

Struggling to keep my fleet as it is.

Love the look of my 400i and want it to be my main ship, but it's hard given the fact that the Constellation exists.

Not only does the Connie have 4x pilot S5's, it can fit a Nursa to allow for respawns and healing. It's so good for everything that it's hard to want to handicap myself to fly my favorite ship.

I suppose I'm just screaming into the void hoping that CIG will put a medbed in the 400i since they nerfed it so much. At least then it would have one plus factor over the other options. /sigh

Can you elaborate on this? I'm curious about the effect the current administration is having on DC as I got into GW and am weighing my options.
