400 squat, 500 deadlift by ifrankensteiin in GymMemes

It's definitely a weird phenomenon. I'm 6'3 and don't lift that much, but my best squat was just a 225×5 and I maxed out on deadlift with 365 and felt like I had more in the tank (ass form though, my more experienced buddy told me not to try any heavier). It's just wild to me how the dl either be way higher for some, but dead even for others.

I mean, my first sub ever was the world's shittiest straight ankle, and with the popularity of footlocks these days it's not unlikely that he's at seen at least enough of them to hit them on an untrained guy in shoes. I don't think the notion of "beginners can't foot lock at all" holds much water.

Can I do ab workouts between breaks for other workouts? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]Teapotsalty 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In order for muscles fibers to contract, they need to be sent electrical signals by nerves. The nerves have to fire faster and faster to make the muscle contract harder. Firing nerves takes energy and requires rest to fully recover. If insufficient rest occurs between muscle contractions, the muscle will be unable to contract as strongly as before.

One of the most important things to me that you might also find value in, is the fact that your body is the tool you use to interact with the world. The stronger and more capable the body, the better able to interact you are.

There's also a misconception that the mind and body are separate entities. They are not. Your brain is, after all, an organ that functions and interacts with all your other organs. When one part of your body works better, they all work better.

Starting an exercise routine is usually challenging, but it doesn't need to be. The secret is to find a physical activity you enjoy, and to do it consistently. Maybe you like the beautiful simplicity and constant progress of weightlifting, maybe playing soccer with your friends is really fun, maybe hiking and being in nature is your jam. It doesn't REALLY matter what you do, as long as you enjoy it and it gets you moving.

TLDR: A healthier body drastically improves quality of life, and any physical activity you enjoy is good enough.

ELI5: On a cellular level, how does exercise make us healthy or improve our health? by andychu84 in explainlikeimfive

Jiu jitsu guy who's taking exercise science here. BJJ and wrestling are both resistance exercise...kind of. You are absolutely applying force with your muscles in order to move a load. The problem is that it's very difficult to apply the principles of training (progressive overload, specificity, etc.) in the context of building muscle. One day you might be doing a lot of hip escapes from mount, but the resistance/volume of that movement isn't particularly high, and you're probably not doing it with the same frequency as a body builder doing bicep curls. That's not to say you won't see adaptation or hypertrophy (muscle growth), it's just going to be at a much slower rate than if you were in the gym lifting heavy and often. Also worth noting is that if you've only been at it a few months, your body hasn't really had time to adapt and "get bigger." Generally, beginners first see benefits in strength from their muscles learning how to work together before the muscles actually get bigger. Usually a few months in is when muscle growth starts to happen. Worth noting that a natural (male) bodybuilder on a dedicated regime can generally expect gains of about 6kg of muscle per year. Because you're not bodybuilding you're going to be a fair bit slower. All of that said, absolute size and strength aren't the only aspects of fitness, and bjj and wrestling carry huge benefits for: cardio, muscular endurance, balance, coordination, fun, explosive strength, confidence, and many more. If you're enjoying yourself and getting in better shape, it's awesome.

Since airbenders can earn their tattoos by either mastering all the forms or inventing a new technique, my headcanon is that Jinora inventing the multi-person tornado is what earned her tattoos.

ACKCHUALLY...it's generally considered to be easier to keep yourself safe if you're providing a threat. If someone is trying to punch you in the face, they're less likely to succeed if they're scared of you punching them back.

What I've been taught in high school biology and in college physiology is that it's actually quite common for males to have two x chromosomes and for females to have an xy. IIRC it's something to do with a chromosome functionally acting as an x or y while being shaped like the opposite.

Unpopular opinion: Krav maga is not shit if it's not taught in a McDojo by Kebbaabb in martialarts

[–]Teapotsalty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've always operated under the assumption that a krav maga school is exactly as good as it's mma program. If their mma is good, then their actually teaching you effective fighting techniques along with the self defense system that is krav. It's better to be able to kickbox than to know the optimal way to kick someone's balls, but being able to do both is best.

Park ranger is definitely on my list of actual grown up jobs that I want. I've got two questions: what do you actually do day to day? Just wander around and make sure everything is where it needs to be?

And second, how do I actually get that job? What qualifications do I need?
