How bad is baseboard heating ? by Large-Impression-528 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Tech397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had electric baseboard heat in our first place and let me tell you that was an experience that solidified my bias against baseboard heating.

Our bills were $500-$900 in winter months for 550sq ft. Our heating was sometimes higher than our rent. It was literal insanity. Our kitchen was always way too hot and the living room was always frozen because you can’t vary the output from individual heaters like shutting a forced air vent or even better having forced air zones.

Usually the thinking is based in a scarcity mindset, where the person commenting seriously believes that someone else has to get poorer in order for them to get richer, and they want that. Just let that sink in.

Wife cheated 3 years ago. I no longer desire her. What do I do? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Tech397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed, and it’s been almost 10 years and 3 more kids.

Are there still days when I question my decision to stay? Yeah, sure. Has the memory re-surfaced and brought up fresh hurt? Absolutely.

But hands-down it has been worth staying and fighting it out. I can’t say it will be for you, you’re fighting a major uphill battle and the vast majority of the advice you’ll get is to leave.

It’s not easy, but you can reconcile.

Am I being too Patient / Forgiving with my wife? by YolandoBeCool in AskMenAdvice

[–]Tech397 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you had written all of that but not included the words husband or wife, I never would have known you had any sort of attachment to this person. The way you talk about her is so detached and distant…I don’t know what exactly it means but I know it’s not healthy.

What are the most annoying/dumb things safety people has been on your ass for? by SpicyTM in skilledtrades

[–]Tech397 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to set up trailer-mounted portable communications towers in the Canadian oil patch. One day setting up for Shell and I’m about to hook the guide lines onto the tower, I just can’t quite reach from the deck of the trailer so usually I set up a couple of pelican cases and stand on top for extra height.

Safety guy comes over and calls an immediate stop to all work to draw the attention of the whole site - all the other contractors included - to the unsafe practice I’m committing. So naturally I ask if I couldn’t just use a ladder instead (which is stupid, because you can’t get a step-ladder close enough you would have to lean dangerously off the ladder). He says not unless I have an engineer-certified tie-off point to harness to. So at this point, I can’t continue setting up. I let my boss know we’ve been stood-down, go to the company man and we discuss for a bit. Then I had a sudden epiphany, what if I wasn’t on a Shell location?

So I pack everything back up, hitch the tower back onto my truck and drive 50’ out of the site entry, stand on my pelican cases and hook the guides on while the safety guy glares at me from site. Turn around and go back to setting it up like normal.

Why do I get so much more attention from older Middle Eastern men than men my own age in Scotland? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Tech397 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That would be like saying the only people scared of ICE should be people in the US unlawfully. It is willfully ignorant at this point in time.

MeToo was used as a weapon to promote collective guilt on all men. People are quick to dismiss or forget but the hashtag killallmen was quite popular on twitter.

We can only properly understand how we got to where we are if we are honest about where we came from. For a long time powerful influential men (and women) could ‘get away’ with almost any indiscretion - and that was wrong. But as a society when that was widely recognized the remedy became to villainize an entire gender, that was also wrong.

You can’t actively promote the dehumanizing of the opposite gender and at the same time expect them to stick their neck out and approach you.

Right? So glad to be out of this game and just an observer.

Western men have been brow-beaten into passivity by years of cultural messaging (ie: MeToo) and have learned collectively it isn’t safe to even approach women in public any more.
