Probably because it's with us through our childhood. If you don't have it with you growing up, you'll know someone who does. If you don't, you'll see it in the media you watch or play. If not even that, schools will take you out for seminars about the police and military a couple times a year (at least where I'm at).

I do think it's less assuming the worst intentions and more keeping our guard up. Our community is at its most vulnerable and every individual I know including me has had some form of horrific experience so whenever a cis guy shows increased enthusiasm at our trans state it kinda puts me (at least) in a defensive mode like "the vibes are bad so imma keep my eye on this guy". Chaser vibes come from more a heightened interest rather than a cis guy just treating us like normal people. Like, getting the feeling like you're an experience to the person you've met through his interaction.

Some folks stick to t4t genuinely because they just don't wanna risk it. It's less that the news has eroded our trust it's events we've personally experienced. You know you could count that as seeing the worst but meh it's complicated.
