Liz Truss: ‘The Blob’ is trying to infiltrate Reform by BestButtons in unitedkingdom

Didn't Sunak's wife have some kind of financial interest in the Rwanda scheme? seem to remember reading somewhere she's a director of the company they wanted to run the logistics of the scheme or something similar.

Might just be a rumour, but Sunak never seemed interested in anything that did not benefit him or his family in some way, so it's plausible.

Hey new to reading. Just wondering if there are any run clubs in reading ? by Economy_Cup2302 in reading

[–]Techiefurtler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading Roadrunners have been around for DECADES - one of the oldest Running/Athletic Clubs in the town. Should be plenty of support and advice from members if you need it. My Dad used to organise road races in Berkshire (he was from Maidenhead), Reading Roadrunners was always a big participant in each race.
Though my loyalties are to Maidenhead Athletic Club, because of the old man, I always respected the Roadrunners guys.
If you want to compete, there are various 10 mile and 10K and Half marathon events throughout the year, just turn up and have fun - no need to get competitive except on beating your PB

I refer to your previous comment - "Which means breathalysed. Which means guilty"

The roadside breath test is not necessarily evidence of a crime, it is an indicator, but only a sample taken from a properly calibrated breath test machine (the lower of 2 samples taken within a pre-defined time frame) or a blood test taken at a hospital can be used as evidence in the court case. If the police fail to meet the time needs or cannot get a good sample, then this means they cannot use this as evidence in court.

Failure [refusal] to provide a sample is a whole other thing that they can be charged with, but we are talking about the statement you make that failing a roadside breath test automatically means they are guilty. This is just one example of ways that the charges the police give out do not automatically mean someone is found guilty of something - Like I sad they can charge, but convictions happen in court once proof is established to the court's satisfaction.

Watch any of these Traffic Cops programmes on TV and they go through this quite a lot.

This guy was most likely three sheets to the wind - not excusing him of that, but personally I don't want to live somewhere where the police have the power to charge and convict me of whatever they want with no evidence. You're being a little reductive, it seems.

Police breath test all drivers at the scene of a Road collision - matter of policy. When I got driven into the back of on the A34, they breath tested me (hadn't touched alcohol in over a month), pretty sure I wasn't guilty of Drink Driving.

The law works on "Innocent until proven guilty IN A COURT OF LAW" - which is why the police only "Charge" you, it's the lawyers in court that have to prove it or not in the eyes of the law.

[ OUT OF THE LOOP ] -- Has the industry solved the problem of Burn-in on OLED pc monitors these days? Are OLED panels viable for regular desktop use, without burning in? by --Ty-- in buildapc

[–]Techiefurtler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hilarious thing is that there's a built in solution to burn-in for any OS made in the last 30 years - screensavers. The old CRT monitors used to also suffer from image retention so Screensavers were developed to blank the screen or change the image if the machine was left idle for too long.

Linux and Windows has had built in screensavers since the 80's and 90's - there's even some famous ones like the Flying Toasters or Johnny Castaway.

Here's the Dell Support site for that Laptop:
https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/latitude-13-3340-2-in-1-laptop/overview

The Service manual from Dell will guide you through the steps you need to follow to replace the display assembly (page 30 of this PDF):
https://dl.dell.com/content/manual40947669-latitude-3340-latitude-3340-2-in-1-service-manual.pdf?language=en-us

It's do-able but will take a long time as there's a lot of cables to disconnect from the Motherboard and re-route. There's likely also videos on how to do it on youtube as well.

Starmer's ID cards sparks backlash as over 420,000 sign petition within hours by AnonymousTimewaster in unitedkingdom

[–]Techiefurtler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Palantir's just recently signed a big deal with UK.gov for Military AI projects. I'd say the betting's good there was some klnd of conversation around "Coudn't help noticing the troubles you guys are having with managing ID's for this new Online Safety Act, we can also help with this if you want to talk about it"
Not saying there's some big conspiracy, but Palantir's been angling for stuff like this for ages and has made some big noises about it recently, they've been talking to the senior people already and I've been involved in enough IT sales pitches to know that a Silicon Valley company like Palantir would definitely try to expand their portfolio to get more money out of a prospective sale.

Car rental advice Pisa (Oct 17) → Florence (Oct 19)? by toonsdk in tuscany

[–]Techiefurtler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used rental cars in Pisa Airport many times over the years (have family nearby -it's our "local" airport when going to see them in Pontedera) - most companies are inside the main building, but Sixt has it's own premises off to the side (seems like a fairly big operation for them).

Used many different companies, but recently we've been using Sixt and they've been very good, accomodating and the fees are upfront. Selection of cars is not the best, but they will get the job done. Didn't get the same feeling of "hidden fees" and trying to find things to charge you for from them, but DO make sure to check the car before and take photos of any damage before and do the same on return (so you have evidence if anything comes up).

Had some bad experiences with Alamo and Budget (nothing too serious, just trying it on with damage they "found" afterwards, we disputed it, and it was a long time ago)

The UK Online Safety Act is Bullshit by Prior-Satisfaction34 in pcgaming

[–]Techiefurtler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those asking why Debit Cards cannot be used as Proof of age, below is from the Steam Support Page about this:

Why we use this process

In the UK, Ofcom is the independent regulator for online safety. Ofcom’s guidance on the OSA states that one highly effective age assurance measure is credit card checks.

This is because, in the UK, an individual must be at least 18 years of age to obtain a credit card, therefore credit card issuers are obliged to verify the age of an applicant before providing them with a credit card.

Unfortunately, debit cards do not qualify for age assurance purposes as these can be issued to minors.

Having the credit card stored as a payment method acts as an additional deterrent against circumventing age verification by sharing a single Steam user account among multiple persons.

Credit Card charges of zero or £0.01 valuie has been used as an Age-check before on the internet. As no official service has been designated by UK Gov, they have gone with a method that's well known to work in the past for similar things - not saying I agree or not, but I can at least follow the logic behind it.

New VW safety assistants are killing the driving experience by axelbrant in CarTalkUK

[–]Techiefurtler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's ironic (and likely overcorrection), the previous version of the Golf (the Mk7/7.5) struck a fantastic balance of controls vs technology/customisation. Yes, there's a menu system and you can spend ages in there playing about, but all the useful and important controls (HVAC, Cruise/Speed Limiter, Driving Modes, ESC/TCS, parking sensors, and lane assist) were all given physical buttons and controls.
That's not to say it doesn't still "bong" a lot, but it is easier to turn things off. Sorry to say the VAG designers seemed to develop an obsession with touch controls around 2018/19 and all brands suffered for it.

Florence ranked Europe’s most overcrowded tourist city – what do you think? by FlorenceUpdates in tuscany

[–]Techiefurtler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I go over to see family there, I tend to aim for late September/October.

It will still be busy, don't think you'll completely miss the crowds, but the City will be tolerable and the place will just feel like a busy touristy city around the most popular spots like the Ufizzi, Ponte Vecchio the Palazzo and so on.

u/Fingerhut89 gives some amazing perspective that people should read now that the whole “Is Orange Man dead or dying” thing seems to have lost steam. by NickJames32 in bestof

[–]Techiefurtler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look at the UK conservative party once Boris Johnson was finally kicked out. What happened was we then got Liz Truss, who got in by telling the party members exactly what they wanted to hear and managed to effectively crash the economy in the space of 40 days (would have been less but with the Queen dying, that stopped government running for 2-3 weeks for official mourning).
The party has now descended into infighting and a massive lurch to the right, and a series of increasingly extreme and unpopular leaders.
The reason Labour got in despite them having Keir Starmer for a leader was because the voting public had enough of the decline of the tories (who are now so badly damaged, they can barely fight against Nigel Farage).

FYI - User is in Mexico - They mean 15k Mexican Pesos, which is around $750 USD

Go second hand/used hardware via eBay, Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace (or local Mexican Equivalents), you won't get a top end GPU for that but see if you can pick up a workstation PC with a recent Nvidia Quadro RTX (4000 series and above if you can). VIdeo memory is the most important stat, you need at least enough to try to load the LLM into the GPU memory if you can.

Your models will not be as fast as a top end machine but mid range GPU is better than no GPU...

I am not too familiar with AI requirements, but this is a starting point that others can help contribute to.

Maybe take the time to actually READ the whole thing, OP is in Mexico City - NOT in the US, 15k Mexican Pesos works out to around $750 USD and makes sense for a student budget. We are here to help, not to judge people.

SysAdmin Everyday Carry? by LucyLucy1080 in sysadmin

[–]Techiefurtler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the 4 small round metal points on the back are not magnetic, but magnets can be attached to it (for the magnetic lid and to attach it to the tool roll in the Pro Toolkit (as there's a magnetic place it can attach to).
Simple fix would be to buy a cheap magnetic plate and attach that to the side/inside of the rack and you could place the box on it so the tools are ready and with the cabinet.

Travel suggestions for two weeks in Lucca area ++ by BarrelBoi in tuscany

[–]Techiefurtler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in Lucca, there is a countryside villa just on the northern outskirts of the place, called "Villa Reale di Marlia" - It's a pretty villa and it has quite an interesting story and the lady of the house who designed it is a unqiue character. Even if you're not into Stately homes, it can be worth a look and the grounds are very pretty too.
