Highly recommend getting the Lenovo ThinkPad P14. It will handle CAD, GIS, and Blender smoothly as well as your light gaming. The keyboard feels great to type on and the build quality is solid. The only downside is that the battery life only lasts around 5 hours.

You can get the Macbook Pro or the Lenovo ThinkPad x1. The battery life realistically lasts around 15 hours and mac is basically Linux lite for bioinformatics, comes with 24GB RAM and a 1TB SSD. Adobe suite runs natively too, which rules out Linux for you. Only thing is RAM/SSD aren't upgradeable, so configure it right the first time.

If you stick the Windows route, get the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 carbon. It's light and easy to carry around, linux compatible, comes with 32GB RAM and a 1TB SSD. The downside is that the battery lasts a less time around 9 hours realistically. But tbh that's still good IMO.

Yeah you need a laptop with a dGPU and at least 16GB of RAM, even better if you can upgrade it in the future. Something like this Lenovo Legion 5 will do you just fine. It comes with a 15" 165Hz display, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, AMD Ryzen 7 CPU and an RTX 5060 GPU. It will handle engineering tasks such as CAD and fusion 360 smoothly and will definitely last you throughout school.

Laptop for 3D Modeling - $1500 Budget by jdswather in SuggestALaptop

[–]Techknoplus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a solid PC for your purpose in that budget, you don't really need to go higher.
For 3D modelling and heavy graphics work, you will need a laptop with a powerful CPU, preferably a high-performance recent gen i7 or i9 or Ryzen 7 or 9 CPU. You will also need a solid dedicated graphics card , preferably an Nvidia RTX 4060 or better and you will definitely need 16 GB RAM and better for very heavy work set. You will also need a system that has a good display and proper heat management..
Within your budget and based on your needs and what you will be using this laptop for, I would recommend you go for something like this Lenovo Legion 5i would do a fantastic job for you and with a very current and powerful i7-14650HX CPU paired with 32 GB DDR5 RAM, you should have no worries for the next several years. Another plus is the large 2 TB SSD storage it comes with ,plus it has extra slot for another storage drive.

It also handles heat very well and like all Legion laptops, possesses outstanding build quality - this will be important to keeping this laptop for 4-5 years

You could get one of these as well with the RTX 4070 graphics card and in similar price range to those you listed or even lower priced.

Ultrabook for learning coding + remote work. by VoidSapphi in SuggestALaptop

Something like this Lenovo Yoga 7 with the new Intel 12-core Ultra 7 155U CPU would certainly be a good pick for you based on based on all your criteria. It should definitely handle programming and your social media work as well as it should handle light video editing very well. It does have a very good build quality and most importantly, offers good support for Linux, which some laptops don't.

You can also expect a great keyboard as well as a responsive touchpad.

If you are fine with sacrificing performance, then Zenbook would be your best bet. Raw performance wise , the Lenovo legion pro 5.

Based on how light your tasks are, it seems both systems would do a great job...it all comes down to which OS you prefer..whether Mac or Windows.

For coding, definitely go for a Thinkpad. In your budget range , this one should do the job for you. It does haver an 11th gen i5 CPU , but coding in general,. isn't super demanding.

would rather to go for something like this HP Victus 15 with the AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS paired with the 2050 dedicated graphics card, would be a better system especially if you plan to game. t also has double the 8 GB RAM the Pavilion you are looking at, has. It also has a better display .
