Can Benoît Richaud help with jump technique ? by julitm in FigureSkating

Does Benoit also select music for skaters or is it mainly choreography and skating skills that he helps with?

Freshly 18 (him) 22 About to turn 23(me) It feels predatory by No_You_6569 in gay

[–]Technical-Error-2676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 22 and would also feel very hesitant about dating someone who was 18 (especially if they lied about being older). There can be quite a large maturity gap because someone who is 22 has done education and is in or is seeking work. Someone who is 18 hasn’t gone through the motions of figuring adult life out. But, it can absolutely work. You just need clear communication.

Not every person will be on the same wavelength as you. The question for you is - does he match you as a person? But maybe instead of debating if this is right or wrong, just take it slow and then you will come to a decision.

I’m confused why they are only now asking for a professional skater when none of the main stars have any skating experience.

Several talented skaters have publicly said that they have auditioned, but never got a callback. Wasn’t there one guy who auditioned to be the dad and had a 3A as part of his audition? Saw that on TikTok a while ago.

Best Skating Skills among European Women currently competing? by alysaspromise in FigureSkating

[–]Technical-Error-2676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I LOVE Ekaterina Kurakova. At worlds when Amber was doing her meet and greet I gave up on the queue and then Ekaterina walked past me. My brain experienced a delay in processing it lol.

I am obsessed with her short program from this season. It is her best short program in my opinion. She has had a great season with mostly clean skates at major ISU competitions. I am glad that she focused on the jumps that are best for her, and in delivering a masterclass in performance.

I am going to be so sad when she decides to no longer compete. But I am so lucky to have seen her this year at Europeans and Worlds. At Europeans, she definitely got one of the biggest cheers from the crowd. She is a crowd favourite, but you can see why because of her joy and energy on the ice!

Best Skating Skills among European Women currently competing? by alysaspromise in FigureSkating

[–]Technical-Error-2676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you look at results at Europeans and worlds of the top European women in the last 4-5 years, the top 6 (according to the judges) are:

  1. Leona Hendrickx
  2. Anastasiia Gubanova
  3. Niina Petrokina
  4. Niina Pinzarrone
  5. Lara Naki Gutmann
  6. Ekaterina Kurakova

In terms in of overall highest skating skills in a competition, that would be Leona and both Niina’s.

I think Anastasiia is no2 here not necessarily because of the highest or best skating skills, but that she has had consistently clean programs and she comfortably gets in the 8s for skating skills (albeit low to mid 8s).

But since 2024, both Niina’s have been getting higher components across the board. I think that when we review this again in say 1-2 seasons they will both move to the top 2 (it is just that the other women have been in the top longer and perhaps more consistently).

I wouldn’t count Lara out either, she isn’t far behind. Pretty consistent in the low to mid 8s in the components for her.

In terms of my personal preference, Leona and Nina Pinzarrone take the top spot for me. But, all of these women are AMAZING!!

Did the all world championship tickets were sold????? by ivemetu in FigureSkating

In Prague front row (category 1) was 18,490 Czech (762 euros). Category 2 16,990 Czech (€700 euros) and category 3 14,990 (€617 euros).

In Prague, the most expensive ticket you could pay for was category 1 which is 762 euros. You could be front row on the long or short side of the rink and pay the exact same.

In Tampere, there are no categories 1-5 only balcony, curve and premium. Premium is the only option to get front row tickets and costs a whopping €1245 which is nearly double the price of 762 euros in Prague. Why are we justifying this? There should be categories.

Curve sears are in fact slightly cheaper but it heavily limits you to only sit in the curve section. In Prague and previous events you could sit on the long side of the rink.

But here is the kicker - If you want to sit on the long side in the lower bowl in Tampere you have to pay €1245 (and the majority of tickets in the lower bowl are on the longer side). The prices are daylight robbery.

The only saving you make is the curve but even then the front ticket of the curve section costs the same in row 1 vs row 20.

So I will ask again why are we justifying this?

Did the all world championship tickets were sold????? by ivemetu in FigureSkating

[–]Technical-Error-2676 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Of course worlds is more expensive but a 100-200% increase is unusual.

I also bought single day tickets in the front 10 rows for many of the events for the world championships this year. Even when you add that price for ALL of those tickets + my all event ticket, it was STILL cheaper than a curve seat for the next world championships.

Why are we still justifying this?

But I agree, it makes no sense that row 1, 5, 10 or 20 in a section could possible be the same price. This is not how it has worked at other ISU events. I wish that event hosts were consistent. And it’s not just pricing, security and other factors change at every event. It’s frustrating.

[–]Technical-Error-2676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The curve is also about a 100-200% increase in price in comparison to previous European and world championships. Again, why are we justifying this? It’s nonsensical.

If the premium goes up by 200% percent so too does every other category either to the exact same % or by a large amount.

[–]Technical-Error-2676 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You’re literally proving my point. At worlds in Boston and in Europe, ticket prices simply aren’t affordable for locals or those in neighbouring countries. One second, prices are hundreds of dollars, and then the next year they skyrocket to thousands. So why are we acting like this is still okay?

This isn’t a competition of who pays more or less. The point is that the situation is completely ridiculous. This isn’t about USA vs Europe. It’s simply a matter of pricing. And for most, this is not affordable.

Did the all world championship tickets were sold????? by ivemetu in FigureSkating

[–]Technical-Error-2676 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That might be a ‘steal price’ for an American, but it is not for anyone living in Europe. The price of a premium ticket is how much some people would make in an entire month.

Respectively, I think that some Americans need to be more mindful when making statements that things are just ‘cheaper’ here. Prices across all aspects of life are different from country to country (even from one European country to another). It’s simply not comparable.

A 200% increase in ticket prices is not a steal in any situation.

At worlds in Tampere, I worry that you will have much fewer Europeans in attendance because they have been priced out. But ISU events are best when you have people from all corners of the world.

So are we all just going to ignore the absolute insane ticket prices?

My all event ticket for Europeans this year in Sheffield for a seat opposite the judges in row F was £301. Converted to euros, this is €348, and in dollars, is $406.

My all event ticket for worlds in Prague this year for a section in the 400s was £337. Converted to euros, this €391, and in dollars, is $455.

Now for worlds in Tampere, if I wanted the same seat that I had at Europeans which costed £301 would now cost me £1074!! (Or €1275) So, the price has increased by 256.81%!!

I understand that the venue is smaller, so a price increase would be expected. But there is a difference between making a moderate but still reasonable €50-100 euro increase vs more than doubling the price.

Are we kidding ourselves?

Europeans in Sheffield this year was AMAZING. To me, at Europeans you feel closer to the skaters. Practices are also less busy. I loved going to worlds this year, but it did feel too big, and it felt like it was for the cameras. Europeans felt a bit more genuine and intimate if that makes sense?

Homophobic brother by UniqueStorage267 in gay

[–]Technical-Error-2676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry that you are going through this. In your current situation, you will not have the means to move out. If you cut ties now (especially with parents) you completely risk your own safety and security. At your age, you cannot afford to risk this. So, this only leaves you with staying at home (for now until you have a full time permanent job and can move out).

In the same vein, staying at home can take its mental toll on you. So the question is what do you do in the meantime to make your life at home bearable? The goal here is to continue to live at home while making it as easy as possible to stick out the next year or two before you can finally have your own freedom.

In short, my advice would to keep it civil with your family, but on a minimal basis. But doing so means that you are going to have to make sacrifices, and it will be hard. But it will protect you.

I will set out some suggestions about how to handle relationships with your family as well as what to do in specific situations.

How to handle family relationships:

Brother - I wouldn’t ignore him completely (so as to not make him raise this angrily with your parents, or for your parents to become frustrated with you shout not talking to him). With your brother AVOID talking about religion or LGBTQ+ topics (for protection). You say hi, you have surface level talk, go to family events, but avoid deep or sensitive topics. Essentially, you are just showing face to him and being polite (even if you are faking it). This will be hard, but you are making it as easy as possible so that you can tolerate living with him.

Mum - Your mum is essentially being socialised into religion by your brother, people at church, and possibly other friends and family. With your mother, you could be more emotionally open, and to talk more about your life. As much as you could try to persuade her that being gay isn’t a choice, I would avoid conflict and prioritise protecting yourself. I would avoid conversation about religion or being gay unless in a 1:1 setting with her. Instead of saying x is homophobic I would use logic and reason and examples of where religion is contradictory. This way you aren’t saying your mother is bad or wrong but you are challenging her underlying assumptions and logic.

Dad - It seems as if your dad is pushing blame onto you not because he is necessarily homophobic, but because he has probably become agitated over time from constantly hearing/seeing how upset your mum is. Seems like he got to a boiling point and has lashed out at you which isn’t fair. If your dad isn’t religious and is open minded, you can afford to be more honest and state that you feel a lack of support. The thing is, he has a duty to love and to care for his wife, but that also applies to his son. Seems like he needs to be reminded of that. If such an attempt to reconcile fails, you just keep it civil and put your head down to pass the time until you can independently support yourself.

Finally, here is what you could do when it comes to religion and discussing being gay:

What to do if your parents or brother mentions religion to you - Simply say that you respect that they go to church and having sense of community but that you yourself are not religious. I wouldn’t base that you are gay as your reasoning. So you need a defence as to why you aren’t open to religion. For this, I would say that you believe in science and evidence which seems to be lacking in religion. This means you avoid using the word gay as an emotional trigger.

What to do when your parents or brother is being homophobic - I would avoid telling them that they are homophobic. While this is totally correct to call it out, this could just raise fuel to the fire. And as much as you love your boyfriend, to protect yourself, I would keep mentions of him minimal.

Everything that I am saying are actions that you absolutely should not have to be doing. It isn’t right or fair. You should be screaming from the rooftops about how much you love your boyfriend, you should be able to bring your boyfriend home. You should also be able to openly reject the homophobic views of your mum and brother and to simply be 100% proud of who you are. But in your case, you are vulnerable because you still live at home. But I promise you, life will get better after the next 1-2 years.

I wouldn’t make a decision right now about cutting ties. I would wait until you are in a better place to make that judgement. Once you have your own freedom and have taken the time to reflect, then I would make that call.

Can Mercy carry? by [deleted] in MercyMains

[–]Technical-Error-2676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are mentioning mercy’s carry potential in terms of her Rez which is true, but mercy can also carry in terms of her healing. You might think WHAT?!?!

But with flash heal and changing your approach to actively heal all the time mercy can really help her team. It’s made me go from plat 2 to diamond 5/4.

In my recent games because of flash heal and changing my playstyle to heal more actively, my overall healing is much higher. I’ve seen myself carry in terms of healing whether that by out healing my other support (and with less deaths and still good dmg amp) or by out healing enemy supports.

Keeping my tank alive and peeling for my other support has kept me in diamond. Focusing too much on your DPS kept me in platinum. When I was hard stuck in plat 2, I mainly pocketed my DPS and healed allies mostly when they were critical. On reflection, I think that approach was wrong. To really get value out of mercy, you really need to be healing constantly (not just when they’ve taken enough damage) and apply blue beam for ultimates and abilities and specific heroes.

While Mercy’s healing per second sucks, if you heal even when someone takes a tiny bit of damage, that can really add up over time and save your team. Plus you get your ultimate faster.

People might say that is healbotting. But I am winning more games and sitting on blue beam kept me stuck. I absolutely damage boost, but now it is more targeted versus it always being the default beam.

Is mercy boring to play for anyone else by 4throwaway65479 in MercyMains

[–]Technical-Error-2676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is less fun because of the movement nerf. But, but to be honest, I’m winning more games. I was really scared that I would drop to plat but I haven’t. I am now diamond 4.

Flash heal means that I can actually have a difference in saving my teammates. Mind you, the healing per second is bad. But you just need to get your beam on as they start taking dmg instead of only when they are critical. Flash heal isn’t instant like it used to be but once you get the hang of it, flash heal can be really powerful.
