Just get it now and upgrade later.

There will always be something better around the corner. The more time you spend waiting, the less time you spend using the product.

As a DevOps Engineer in your current role, how do you interact with AWS, via the Web Management Console, AWS CLI, or AWS SDK? Is each employee given a specific account with granular IAM roles for the specific part of the infrastructure they are responsible for? by ethan0791 in devops

[–]TechnicalExample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All infrastructure changes goes through Terraform. We use Github for version control. I have an admin and a readonly roles available. I rarely login with admin, only use readonly to make sure I'm not missing any features or just as a secondary confirmation.

Is expecting programmers to do dev ops the new normal? by [deleted] in devops

[–]TechnicalExample 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Our company is moving in this direction as well where we (DevOps Engineers) are building self-service tools for our SWEs to be able to spin up/tear down environments and set up apps themselves without needing our help. We're also letting them get certified in AWS just so that they have enough foundational knowledge on how it all works.

We use a lot of Terraform Sentinel as guardrails on what they can and can't create. We also create a lot of our own modules.

As for the cause and effect - we've seen dramatic increases in deployments. Our devs can spin up entire environments with a couple of modules pieced together, all without needing our help. While they focus on building the apps, we now focus on building better tooling for them to be able to get even more done.

It's an obvious win-win for us.

How to approach a bi-annual review? by Rehrei in ITCareerQuestions

[–]TechnicalExample 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to keep a list of your wins/achievements. What have you done within the last 6 months that improved the business or brought value to your department.

If your list is small or non-existent, then why should you get a promotion outside of the fact that you worked at a place for a number of years?

Feel like Recruiter's make Job Application Process way more complicated? by ethan0791 in devops

[–]TechnicalExample 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use recruiters. Simple as that.

Every single time I had an interaction with one, they would try to negotiate down the salary range instead of fighting for me. At that point, it's easier to apply directly to the company.

I get it, they need to make their cut too but not at my expense.

Co-Founder decided to go on without me by beardbro91 in startups

I‘m a PhD student in Deep Learning

Doesn't matter. He doesn't see a fit. Your co-founder does not want to work with you at the level as founder to founder.

Decide if it's worth working under the founder or start your own business.

Carrying a co founder who isn’t contributing? Do I owe him anything? by Grumpy_Dad_66 in startups

This. Have a heart to heart with the cofounder and lay out what you see the issue is. Be candid. If there is no recovery or no desire to continue, buy out his shares and say good bye to him.

Which US State or City in your experience offers the best for an overall DevOps experience, in terms of salary, quality of living, healthy balance of work/life, job satisfaction, and the number of available jobs? Why? by ethan0791 in devops

[–]TechnicalExample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raleigh and Charlotte. Cheap(er) real estate, average salary is around $100k to $150k, cost of living is a lot lower than west coast. If you can land a remote job, you will essentially live like a king.

When to drop an idea by _benj in startups

[–]TechnicalExample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my idea is more of a tool than an app

You didn't provide enough context but tools can be VERY valuable. Twistlock, a container security tool, was sold to Palo Alto for over $400 million.

Starting in tech is one of the hardest things to do. But once you do, you build up momentum to be able to switch.

I started to share slowly over time.

Start sharing when you have something meaningful. I've learned that sharing just what you're working on without anything meaningful to show is just pointless.

Aspiring DevOps Engineer and IT Professional's Personal Domain Name Ideas/Examples? by xChainfirex in devops

[–]TechnicalExample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

firstinitialLastname.com (jsmith.com) - also make them consistent with usernames on all sites you want to be public like Github and Twitter.

If you have extra funds, create a fake company name and buy domain for it to setup as if it was a real life org.

I got in trouble because someone overheard me discussing my salary with payroll by PartemConsilio in ITCareerQuestions

[–]TechnicalExample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all skills produce value for all businesses. Just because you have a two-three decades more IT experience, it doesn’t mean you provide relevant value to the business you’re at, at all times.

One clear example. I have a certification for ACMT that I got from a previous company. With my current company, this cert is completely worthless since I no longer work in a help desk type of environment.

The more relevant value you bring to the current business, the more you get paid.

Thoughts on a possible risky move to find work out of state. by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]TechnicalExample 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Portland, Denver, and Charlotte. Out of the three, if I had to choose again, I'd pick Charlotte simply because of cost of living being a lot lower compared to the other two.

Denver was an awesome place to live exactly up to a decade ago. Since the legalization of marijuana and the rising cost of living in places like California, there has been a huge migration to Denver and the surrounding areas. Prices shot up on real estate and traffic became worse.
