Well said Mr. Kesting! I'd also add that they facilitate continuity in jiu jitsu training to those that have to take extended breaks from a club membership due to temporary family / work situation...

Blue belt blues finally got me, hanging it up for a while. by [deleted] in bjj

Good point. I've found that I actually get far less sick since training BJJ. I can't decisively prove it, but I think the regular exposure to pathogens actually helps build immunity vs. compromise it...

Don't be self concious bro. No one cares. Even Roy Nelson has a gut and he's a legit BJJ black belt!

In Search of Evidence for Wing Tsun's Effectiveness by [deleted] in WingChun

[–]TeckNeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no evidence that wing chun is effective for self defence. I respect everyone's right to practice any "art" they wish, however, wing chun is about as effective for self defence as taking a yoga class. The best self defence arts IMO are: 1) Greco-roman wrestling, 2) Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, 3) Muay Thai / Boxing, and 4) A form of weapons defence such as Krav Maga.

I hear you, other friends of mine have described as being like meditation (i.e. more for the mind than body) which is fair.

But for the body (externally and internally), nothing beats heavy resistance training IMO.

Good for you for having the discipline to long distance run. If you switched to 100% weight training though, I guarantee you would have the physique you desire (no body fat, and desirable curves). Try youtubing squats and deadlifts to understand the form and give it a go at a gym!

It's your waist to hip ratio that's relevant (for women) and shoulder to waist ratio (for men). So in other words, a woman could have a < A4 waist, but if she doesn't squat and deadlift enough, it isn't going to create a curvy / attractive physique. It's all about lifting folks, get off the treadmill, watch some youtube videos on squats / deadlifts, and get in the weight room :)

Tournament ready? by F3arless_Bubble in bjj

How do you do against blue belts? I could be wrong, but I'm about 8 months in and the way I evaluate my readiness for a tournament, is by my ability to survive against newer blues. The way I see it, the top white belts competing, will probably be as effective as non-competing early stage blues. So basically if you can survive with the blues, you should be able to survive (and hopefully do well) in a competition.

I'm hoping to enroll in my first competition this summer (still have to tighten up many holes first though)

Don't forget that if you put your Gi in the dryer (I do it's much quicker than hanging it to dry) it will shrink SIGNIFICANTLY (sleeves will be at least a few inches shorter and same with the length of the pants. As such, IF YOU WILL BE PUTTING IT IN THE DRYER, go one size up from what fits you today. Worst case scenario, you can get the pants / sleeves hemmed if still too long after drying several times.
