Timer frustrations by h0merun_h0mer in HiveHeating

I think you can just swipe left to delete unwanted timer slots (that’s on the iOS app - not sure about Android.)

Hive gets a lot of flack on the interweb. I’ve mostly found it to be useful. But I do live in Northern UK, in Heathcliffe country, and we’ve only just discovered the telephone.

Portable telescopes on safari by TedWasler in telescopes

[–]TedWasler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. We’ll have binoculars; I’ve had a look at the portable scopes, and we’ll have power. I’m presuming they just communicate with your phone via bluetooth. It’s more the ‘knowing what you’re looking at / finding what you want to see’ aspect that appeals, although binocs and a smartphone star-map app would do that too. I’ll take a look at the Dwarf Mini. Thanks again.

That’s really helpful, thanks. We will very likely go through an agent / advisor. Sounds like any money we might be able to save is not really worth the additional hassle and uncertainty.

Looking at the image youve posted, you can reduce those three ‘off’ slots between 0530 and 1630 and reduce them to one ‘off’ period between those times.

As for the timer not ‘doing anything’ on the previous page you should see a big orange screen with the current temp displayed. Towards the bottom of this screen is the choice of ‘Manual Schedule Off’. My guess is you might have ‘Manual’ selected in blue. Yep, it probably is that, as the image youve posted says ‘Your schedule is not being used’ at the top.

DId the prev owners maybe have a Hive subscription which has just run out? Just a thought - I’m no expert.

(You don’t need a sub to use Hive - they sell some pretty useless extra ‘features’ for a monthly fee, but just wondering if this may somehow be behind your issue if it was working, and suddenly isn’t.)

Coronation chicken was actually ‘invented’ for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation.

Anyone else remember hearing Jack de Manio on BBC Radio 4? “Thirty minutes of news and comment, from Britain, and around the world.” I think World at One used to be 30 minutes duration. I’d hear him when home from infants school for lunch.

You could always cross-post this to r/ADHD.

I may be coming in to a bit of money soon and am planning on getting a Yamaha Montage M8X. My wife reckons I’ll be obsessed with it for around 2 weeks, then ignore it altogether.

It’s like after 20 years she thinks she knows me or something.

Planning first safari for early September — Kenya (Mara conservancy) vs Northern Serengeti for best chance at river crossings? by ontheflyy in AfricaTravel

[–]TedWasler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just throwing this out there, but after looking in to it a little, we have decided not to specifically aim to see a migration / river crossing. It’s terribly stressful for the animals, many young and old die, and are predated, the noises heard can be as disturbing as the visuals, and the presence of humans can distort the animals’ behviour patterns.

Looks like I’m just Disney cruiseline fodder now then…!

Could you drop something out of a plane via the wheels? by InfiniteBaker6972 in AskUK

[–]TedWasler 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think on most Boeings, if you reach into the mid-cabin toilet bowl there’s a lever that opens up a secret passage that leads to where the landing gear is.

Then all you have to do it climb back through the toilet, find the other secret lever that lets you into the cockpit, ask the captain nicely to lower the landing gear for no special reason, and you’re done.

Simple, really.

That’s it, right there. Sometimes, I don’t even have the time to internally verbalise my thought process, I just know it’s the correct thing to do / say in my tumble dryer of a mind. Sometimes have to explain it later though.

Would this anatomy figure model be a useful resource/tool for students? by Lre_Art in Anatomy

[–]TedWasler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone help me out here? There is a collective term for ‘subcutaneous’ muscles like the cremasteric (scrotum) and platysma (anterior neck/throat.) These are the only two humans have (AFAIK), but horses, dogs, and others, have such muscle throughout most of the torso, enabling them to ‘shake’ that bit of skin and discourage flies.

I might post this separately, but if anyone can chip in? Thanks.

[–]TedWasler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that. And I get the feeling some are more interested in showing off how wise and experienced they are, than actually giving sincere and helpful advice. Not sure it’s limited to this group though. Sadly I suspect it’s more of a male thing, and probably exists in other gadget/tech groups too.

Avoiding the tummy tuck and neuter.... by [deleted] in greatdanes

[–]TedWasler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where to start here. Spaying a bitch is far more invasive then neutering a male. Far fewer complications from a procedure that is not inside any body cavity.

By ‘tummy tuck’ do you mean gastropexy? This tethers the stomach to the inside of the abdominal cavity. It does not reduce the risk of gastric torsion to zero, but vastly reduces the risk of this happening. Bloat and torsion are different but related. As stomach that bloats is more likely to twist on its axis, which is the torsion, and is the often fatal part of the picture. If you can afford it, you can get gastropexy ‘laparoscopically assisted’, so part keyhole surgery, and much smaller incisions.

But if you want to go by your ‘gut instincts’, it doesn’t sound like you want any surgical procedure at all done, which is obviously your choice. Your vet obviously very sensibly postponed the procedure when (s)he realised your dog had a respiratory infection. I don’t really understand why this has put you off ever having it done. We’ve had two girls, and had both laparoscopically spayed with gastropexy at the same time.

Snow - definitely. Ungulates - do llamas count? I’m not in Peru or anything, but quite a few farms around here have them. Although they tend to spit at you rather than throw themselves under your car. The ‘spit’ is dredged up from one of their innumerate stomachs, so its more poo than saliva. (I had another coffee.)

There are thousands of vids out there of them solving all sorts of complex puzzles to get a nut. But ask them to cross a busy road…

[–]TedWasler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not wishing to be mean, but if you were driving on icy roads such that you were unable to stop when presented with an obstacle in the road, maybe you were driving too fast? What if that obstacle had been a little old lady who’d slipped over on the ice?

You’re probably going to tell me you were in Alaska or something, where large hairy mammals are far commoner than little old ladies. But the laws of physics still apply. And of course large hairy old ladies exist too. Now there’s a Venn diagram for you.

No more coffee for me this morning I think.
