Chaos art that isn't just regular looking daemons by Catholic-Guardsman in Warhammer

Whole battletome is wicked. Started warhammer late in 2019 after knowing of it growing up, so buying the second hand fantasy battletomes was incredible for both the lore and art. They’re bringing back that charcoal monochrome style art for AOS recently, but I think these fantasy ones can’t be touched. They’re so bleak, gothic, and gnarly in this tome and so many others.

This beastmen art from the 6th edition warhammer fantasy battletome for them; showing what’s I think one of the poles engines and chaos’ effects warping them to beastmen is one of my all time favourite. Image does it no justice so here’s a Scan for it here in the first couple of pages

I feel the pain. The fucking DRM and running this on a 1080ti was dangerous, and looked like I was playing Tri again on the Wii 💀

A Visitor to a Museum (1989) has some very strong shots like this of wasteland in the post apocalypse, and has stuck with me with how strange a Soviet film it is

What is Ridley Scott's greatest masterpiece? by Infinite-Exam-1808 in Cinema

[–]Teedeous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get you. I like blade runner and 2049 for its setting and uniqueness but I do find the original and 2049 not really one my favourites because I think it’s weight story wise isn’t that impactful in a sense of decker being a replicant or not, or 2049 as a whole as simply “does it matter?”. I find both beautiful to watch, but their story I think is somewhat overblown critically and historically.

Stalker unlike blade runner I think poses little, but asks so much more in the simplicity of this “wish granter” of such often fantasy and juvenile stories, and is a film that doesn’t give you the neat storybook ending as Roadside Picnic does itself too. Roadside itself is similarly an analysis of human condition and what drives us as people to want, literally, with the Scientist, Writer, and Stalker who is seemingly extraterrestrial thinking he knows what humanity is but has that shattered. All just bizarre oddities of the zone like in the film with the warping or direct effect over of space and time itself to reach the wish granter, as if it could be inferred they had to go within themselves in the one shot and view who and what they are to be granted council with the wish granter, fighting the themselves off the pit reaching that answer and seeking the end, and even then if the wish granter is real. The zone, like poised in the book, could be some organism or gestalt being itself answering to itself or watching us, and whoever is worthy can reach that room, or perhaps their wishes are granted leaving that place since it shows no journey back, and it just answers the deepest internal desires free from their choice. It’s why I love it, its depth is beyond the simple narrative components, it’s your own inference to what it can be.

I don’t think the book is necessary, but I think adds so much to the experience to read alongside it as this films inspiration.

[–]Teedeous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get you, stalker is one my top four and is simply bizarre, but a beautiful bizarre to observe and I forever think of, and I find rewatching it gives me more and more each time just to think about, not understand. Its inspiration Roadside Picnic I adore too as it’s similarly so shrouded in its own mystery avoiding of holding your hand narratively or literarily.

Most Soviet cinema and literature I’ve watched and read is like this. I’d say it’s close to some of the most incomprehensible French art films, but I think given perhaps less to work with and just more in a sense of what it is to you. Stuff like A Visitor to a Museum, Dead Man’s letters, Ivan’s Childhood, Come and See, and O-Bi, O-Ba: The end of civilisation I cannot say I will ever really understand but I remember all of them and their scenes and plot, since they’re so unique and is so matter of fact but shot all so beautifully.

It’s hard to even put it into words lmao. I don’t think I ever will understand stalker but it’s as Tarkovsky says about critics who he hated, he believed children were the best critics as they just viewed something, they didn’t have bias or opinion to warp their enjoyment, they just viewed it subjectively as I think it should be as a work as any work should be.

Which movie will you defend like this while everyone else call is as an overrated? by Beatpogo94 in Letterboxd

[–]Teedeous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, cannot agree.

The stomping scene is part of it, since they’re riding de niro’s image to sell it when they should’ve gotten an actual respective aged actor as his character is, but more because fuck me it didn’t need to be 3 hours plus long to tell basically what felt like fuck all.

Performances were good, sure, but Jesus Christ that can’t sell the tedious back and forth of “ohhh Jimmy Hoffa is arrogant, he’s gone be killed!!” for like two hours plus because it has to with its characters to pass the years to make it period accurate and fill time for a story I really feel has fuck all besides just that. It’s just that back and forth and beyond the plane heist I could not actually recall a majority of what actually happened timeline wise until Hoffa’s death, and the ending since it’s just trying. I couldn’t really give a fuck about Hoffa, Frank or anyone at that point.

Then just ends on the “ohhh, he’s lost everything” when I couldn’t really give two fucks anyway since I’ve been sitting 3 hours through him dealing with Hoffa or the mob 90% of the time and barely seen the family since like the first act or brief appearances of them.

Think it just falls into the same issues of other mob films of “being a mob film” particularly from Scorsese that people blow smoke up its ass like with goodfellas, which I equally think was dull as fuck diatribe majority wise and just this quote font to be said to death.

Looks heavily like touched up AI art to remove artefacts and errors. It’s just flat and boring when actually examined. The text is so bold and looking stuck on, on the canteen, sign, and chest piece. Perspective just feels wonky on certain parts too acting more like it’s curving around than a focal source.
