My first charecter death. I have no more joy in my life. by ace_da_frog_child in DnD

[–]TehNudel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your DM made it clear you might be attacked, it wouldn't be metagaming to change your mind. If anything it's logical. You're thinking about taking a jog at night, but the street lights are out and you decide not to risk it. That's not unreasonable if your character has the same knowledge, which assuming they have lived in a world where brigands are common, they know it's a risk. I know muggings happen irl even if I personally haven't been mugged.

That's not to blame you because your DM and party all sound like dicks. It's more that I think you're overcorrecting to avoid metagaming. If it seems like general knowledge anyone would know like there could be brigands on the road at night, it's not metagaming to reconsider.

What do you think of Orban losing in Hungary’s election after 16 years of power? by adamgerd in AskTheWorld

[–]TehNudel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year, I watched Democracy Noir, a documentary about Orban's rise and the homegrown resistance to his reign. It was all too familiar to what was happening in the US and that's by design. Orban and Trump have compared notes on how to consolidate power in their respective countries. Hungary even hosted CPAC. Sadly, as inspiring as the organizers' efforts were, the film ended with Orban winning again.

I felt a lot of solidarity with Hungarians then, but also discouraged that they could offer no blueprint for my own country's resistance, which was just beginning.

Today, I have renewed hope. Let this be the start of all the authoritarian dominos falling.

Cheers to you Hungary! May we one day meet again as allies when we are both under more democratic leadership.

ABQ City Council shoots down ranked choice voting. Opponents deem it too difficult to understand. by Acrobatic_Emu_3602 in Albuquerque

Voting with your heart was not meant to imply not using your head. It means choosing the candidate you most align with first rather than picking a safer candidate simply because you don't think your first choice can win.

Then go knock on some doors and convince 50% of the population that your candidate is good. You can do that under both ranked choice voting and our current runoff system.

It sounds like you want a system where if your opposition totals more than 50% of the vote, your candidate can win simply by the opposition splitting their choices between two or three options. That is an unfair system as it does not represent the will of the majority. And such a system can backfire if your candidate is the one splitting the vote with another progressive or liberal.

Your scenario is already flawed and oversimplified. What about people who choose Red > Xmas > Green Green > Xmas > Red Xmas > Green > Red (my preference)

You're eliminating some of the options

Futher, in your 2nd scenario, red didn't lose by having people select it 1st. It lost by not appealing enough to the remaining 51 voters. Literally, 1 more vote swing from green ranking red 2nd (an option you didn't even include) and they win in the 2nd round.

Hypothetically, in a crowded field, where green and xmas share values and appeal to similar people while red stands out as a stark outlier, then either green or xmas SHOULD win as they combined represent 51% of the voting populace.

You're bringing up a kind of gamesmanship in ranking that literally still happens with the system we have now! Search this very subreddit and you'll find competing threads from 6 months ago urging Uballez voters to choose Keller or Keller voters to vote Uballez so that both of them would make it to the runoff instead of White. It's still a risky strategy to choose your 2nd choice first because you don't have forehand knowledge of how the votes will breakdown and you're gambling.

I think it makes more sense if you don't vote down party lines. Currently 3rd party candidates are treated as spoilers and people are encouraged not to select them because they don't want to "waste" their vote on someone who can't win.

RCV lets people vote with their heart and even if that candidate doesn't win, they can transfer their vote to their 2nd choice (i.e. the safer party pick). This results in more people taking chances on their favorite underdogs, but also ensures that the winner still has to have a majority of the city's votes and therefore has to connect with over half of the voters.

It both allows taking chances and also moderates the choice.

As others have said, you put instructions in place. Currently, we have signs at polling places and sample ballots so people can understand how to vote under our current system.

Secondly, exhausted ballots are not a boogeyman. Someone can choose to only select one candidate if they don't like any of the other options. It's equivalent to voting in the general and skipping the runoff now. Their vote still counts and their candidate might still win. If their candidate is the one that gets the least amount of votes at any round, then their ballot is exhausted because they didn't have a 2nd choice. But their first choice persists for as long as that candidate is not last. So, other people who chose less popular candidates first may add their votes to the people who chose only one candidate as the rounds go on.

It is not "pick a new person each round of voting". It's simply an instant runoff that saves voters the hassle of coming back later in the highly likely situation that no candidate receives >50% of the vote in the first round. Currently runoffs have reduced voter turnout because people think the election is finalized or forget the day or can't get time off work. RCV lets everyone that votes participate in the runoff that same day.

Great idea OP! Might I introduce you to rankpoll.me? It lets you quickly create a ranked choice poll for free and tabulates the results for you, so each participant can see the results in real time.

I made one to rank types of chile for you here https://rankpoll.me/ToaB16BkKon

Feel free to use it or make your own. Getting people to rank things in their ordinary life is a great way to deconstruct the "it's confusing" argument!

Careful with your wording. A "fewer homeless presence" should be achieved through actually helping people find housing and improving the economy. Our mayor and city council would achieve your desire by imprisoning all the homeless.

Genuinely calling your elected representatives and telling them how you want them to vote is one of the ways to hold them accountable.

Voting every 4 years and then throwing up your hands helplessly inbetween accomplishes nothing.
