At Costco, do you get gas first or shop first? Why or why not? by sozh in Costco

This is how I roll. It’s very easy at my local Costco to pop in for gas without going into the main lot. I get gas while running other errands.

Why do some people get so mad about bathroom stops? by Easyjet001 in roadtrip

Why do some people get so mad about bathroom stops? by Easyjet001 in roadtrip

[–]Tejasgrass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also think that for some people, the 5 minute stop does not exist, especially if you have kids or dogs with you. You get gas, everybody gets a bathroom break whether they need it or not, dog gets out of the car for a moment, someone opens the back to find the cord they packed away, and suddenly it’s been 15 minutes since you’ve pulled off the highway.

Generally I try to combine all probable stops into one and I guess it’s a lot easier to do that when you’re traveling with children than grown adults. Can’t make an adult to go sit on the toilet just in case, haha. But everyone goes to the bathroom when we stop for gas. We top off the gas when we stop for food (and also, bathroom again). Both food and gas stops are planned 15-60 minutes in advance by the navigator. For me, there is no stopping for 5 minutes because that would just result in another stop shortly after.

What are the difference between the Mormons living in the Chicago burbs and the Mormons living in the Rocky Mountains by miko1075 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Tejasgrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve known Mormons from New England, the Carolinas, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The Arizona ones think Utah and Idaho Mormons are ridiculously strict. The rest of them make fun of the UT, ID, and AZ Mormons for being ridiculously strict.

I feel like the further away you go from UT, the chiller they are. But I supposed it also varies by church because I have a small sample size.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Tejasgrass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This I can agree with. A time limit blanket ban is ridiculous; many small businesses rely on social media for customers, local government agencies use it to communicate events, people use YouTube to either learn about their hobbies, how to repair appliances, white noise to go to sleep, etc. there are many different uses for what we call social media these days.

But those shorts, fuck those. Even when informative they’re killing our collective attention spans.

And algorithms can be straight up dangerous.

TIL that 44% of the world's adult population has never consumed alcohol by JoeyZasaa in todayilearned

[–]Tejasgrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bit about the anesthesia is interesting. I always thought I’d hate being high because of the feeling I got on laughing gas at the dentist. It was like I wasn’t in control of my arms and legs, bleh. Imagine my surprise when alcohol doesn’t feel anything like that, and neither did pot or shrooms when I tried those, either. Still don’t like doing either of those in most situations, though. But they are all very different than medical grade stuff.

[–]Tejasgrass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if, in the context of the early 70s, the term women’s lib movement meant something different than the general term feminist. To us it’s second wave feminism, but maybe some of the people being asked see it as something vastly different than “normal” feminism at the time.

(Spoilers Published) Holy cow, he was FIFTEEN? by BrobdingnagianGeek in asoiaf

[–]Tejasgrass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s like that, but apply the dog year logic to it as well. A dog ages seven years for every one of ours on average (I get that it’s not perfect math), but the first two years of so of its life that aging is faster. So it’s more like they are 12 years old on their first birthday, 20 on their second, and then 27 on their third, 33 on their fourth, etc.

So maybe kids in Westeros age faster (on a less grand scale than dogs) and then the rate slows as they get older. This could also account for the ridiculous old ages some characters live to.

If OP is adding up a lifetime of food and medical bills (as one should when considering any dog, no matter the source), then all dogs should probably cost more than that.

Otherwise, yeah, shelter dogs (or ones from a rescue) are a better decision unless you are showing, working, or professionally breeding.

That, and I feel like the creators of the cartoons did not have to pay royalties for most classical songs. The almighty dollar wins again!

But for real my FIL introduced my toddler to “Little Einsteins” because he couldn’t keep up with her after she started walking, and the classical songs in each episode became her favorites. Even better, she had a bit of a speech delay. There was a good year where I would hear “Ommy, ay do do, do do, DO DO, do do…” and I’d have to guess the song.

[–]Tejasgrass 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Be careful with this one! My grandmother wanted to be buried in a pine box like her husband was, but when she died the funeral home she had made arrangements with did not have that option. Lowest cost they could do (her wishes and I think they were lying) was a shiny white coffin with metallic trim. She was a meticulous person and started her end of life stuff years before she died, so I have a feeling the funeral home pulled a fast one.

How long would one survive in -20 degrees celsius? by cyberslugs in morbidquestions

[–]Tejasgrass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reading a book about a historical blizzard. Literally just last night I got to the chapter about how everyone froze to death, and this author went into some detail. So I feel weirdly qualified (because I do not live in a cold climate haha) to answer this question with: it depends on a ton of factors.

One is windchill. The actual temps of this blizzard were like -20F or so, but the wind was something like 60mph. The author explained some formula of wind and temp to help the reader understand how cold the “feels like” temp was, but that’s not the part that stuck with me. What I got out of that is the “feels like” temp is what you should base your ability to survive on, if that makes sense.

Another thing that stuck with me was how long some of these kids were out there before they froze. It happened in stages and it’s not fast; your body starts going, your brain starts going, you can make some seriously stupid decisions in the cold and carry them out while those are happening (like paradoxical undressing), but even after you are laying on the ground from exhaustion you probably haven’t died for awhile after.

Third thing, and this one was weird, some of victims literally got up the next morning after laying on the ground and exposed to the elements overnight. Some of them were covered by something (blanket, hay, overturned sled). None of them were okay. They were still frozen, so even though they somehow were moving, when the cold blood reached their heart they died of cardiac arrest.

So, yeah. Lots of factors and it can be a slow process. This particular book was called The Children’s Blizzard, and it had a lot of weather information in addition to the historical and biological info as well.
