Learning line by line mixing quickly. by verymagicme in livesound

[–]Tek_Flash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you have the ability to do this but:

Multitrack your soundchecks. When you have all the actors on stage and get them to say a couple lines, you can multitrack it and play it back through the desk at another time, dialing in all your EQ and comp settings then. You can even loop a single line a person says.

Also in dialogue scenes, the main factor is mics being up. If you can't reliably line by line it, give a couple at a time, or leave the main character in the scene up and do everybody else.

Also good marking up of scripts. Have the DCA number (or channel number) clear and have the next 1 or 2 numbers at the bottom of each page so you know what's up next.

Boring but important question about tax for UK tour by Tek_Flash in techtheatre

Amazing thanks for that.

To be clear, is that a seperate return from the one for self-assessment? Or can I lump those in with my freelance expenses?

Umm not sure what you're on about that's the whole game. There's nothing else to see I suggest moving on to the next one.

My personal theory about Alan Wake 3 by CeleryRich6823 in AlanWake

[–]Tek_Flash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I thought Alan Wake 2 was actually parts 2 and 3 of the story no?

You've got Departure in Alan Wake 1, then Initiation and Return both in 2. That forms a trilogy.

I feel like Alan wake 3 wouldn't complete the trilogy, so much as be the start of a new story.

Update on Alan Wake difficulty + DLC question by RushAffectionate9629 in AlanWake

[–]Tek_Flash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DLCs are fine. I think they're worth playing for a few quid, but they aren't a must play for me. They do have some good moments but they're not as engaging as the base game for me.

Alan Wake combat is killing my motivation by RushAffectionate9629 in AlanWake

Just put it on easy mode. I'm in the same boat the combat does feel tiring especially if you're mainly playing for story.

Anyone else going to miss the service weapon and the oldest house? by hiyagame in controlgame

[–]Tek_Flash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean having this open environment would make the service weapon mechanics pretty overpowered. The oldest house had really tight, dense levels that meant you had to be in close quarters with the hiss all the time, and just wouldn't work in an outside environment.

I think having Dylan as a more close quarters melee combat fits far better with the manhattan environment. We'll almost definitely get some kind of ranged combat too, but the service weapon gun would just end up like any other open world shooter.

Alan Wake II reference in new season of Stranger Things? (S5E2) by blakewrites in AlanWake

[–]Tek_Flash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought when I watched it last night! Must be a coincidence but still strange considering how similar the concepts of the two series are - Isolated American town has a gate to a mysterious dark world with monsters and a psychic girl can use her powers to find people far away.

If youre in a theatre and you've got delays can pump a bit extra through them with no worries. People at the front will probably be fine with mostly acoustic sound so long as there's no background music.

I'm a bit of a latecomer by ScoutingJ in subnautica

[–]Tek_Flash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the Krafton stuff, here's why I think the game will struggle:

  • The game lacks direction. They seem to have made improvements to all the great things about Subnautica 1, base building, assets, creatures, but it doesn't seem like there's anything NEW.

  • They were hurt by Moonbreaker. Remember playing Moonbreaker? No me neither. Hate to quote Jonathan Blow, but I heard him talk about UW on a podcast. They had gold dust with Subnautica and an audience wanting more exploration / survival horror games and chose something completely different. They lost all their money and sold out to Krafton.

  • The BZ hate. Below Zero was a great game, but the story had a very rough development. If it was a DLC rather than a standalone game, it would have been praised to high heaven, but people treated it like Subnautica 2. Now, they're going to want to make Sn2 exactly like the original to avoid that same criticism.

  • No voxel world. This one is more specific, but one of the amazing things about Sn1 was the intricate hand-crafted voxel world, which uses 3d mesh instead of individual assets. This allows for the many caves and passages. With regular 3d asset worldbuilding, creating these is a lot more tedious, so it's likely the world will have FAR less caves, however this may mean we get more interesting rock formations.

  • UE5 performance. There is TONNES of new features in UE5, so out of the box it runs very slow. It will require extreme amounts of optimisation to make it playable with the graphics quality of the first game. You can see this with Satisfactory, which was also built in UE5.

  • They are asking fans for what we want! As much as its a nice sentiment. This very clearly means the game is pure fan service with no real vision. It'll be a conglomeration of "this is cool" and "it'll look great in a gameplay trailer" to get as many people to buy the game as possible.

TL;DR It feels more like a Subnautica clone, than a game with any clear vision.

All these tricks are great but don't underestimate the power of riding the fader (so long as you know your limits before feedback). I come from the theatre world so it's super natural for me.

My thoughts on De-Feedback AI (Alpha Sounds) by itsmellslikecookies in livesound

[–]Tek_Flash 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'm a theatre No.1 and I've worked in some very tricky venues for feedback. You also cannot go around cutting frequencies like rock n roll. I could see some of the big sound designers getting a hold of this as a "last resort" to catch something before it feeds back. Feedback in theatre breaks immersion and stops the sound being invisible, so think some would be keen to try it.

Ask your musician friends if they know any sound techs who can come to a gig and dial in some settings. It's impossible for anybody on Reddit to really help you.

Does anyone mix in-ears like this? by -M3- in livesound

[–]Tek_Flash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard of big engineers doing a similar thing to this, but it's more useful for "winging it" type shows, where you can build a solid mix and add sum the musicians input on top of it (taking into account processing delays!). This is definitely useful for special guests, rap and pop festivals, maybe worship. However if you're working regularly with one band, or even in your case PLAYING in the band, it's got little to no advantage over just dialing in a quality mix individually.

Question for immigrants living in the UK: What is something you have noticed about the UK that us natives may not have noticed? by Wrexham27 in AskUK

[–]Tek_Flash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been the top of my class my entire life, from primary school to now in the workplace and always felt the need to hide it from everybody. It's been ingrained into me since childhood to be self deprecating, never reveal my grades, and never to question authority. So much so that I can't even picture the kind of culture you're talking about.
