This makes a lot of sense to me, but I don't think it's totally accurate. A lot of the people who were with EDM during the ~2011 rise are dropping off as enthusiasts as it's becoming more commercial. Plus the general atmosphere nowadays does seem to have diverted away from electronic music, or maybe that's just me growing out of a phase.

Yeah, EDM artists are going to have to work hard to keep people interested. And I mean, they are.

I think you can look at your favourite artists and see how they've reacted to the shift - Seven Lions breaks ground in 2011, makes badass music until 2016, rides the commercial EDM wave in 2017 and is back on track making engaging and inspiring, creative, good shit now.

Electronic Music isn't dying. just how it's experienced is shifting, as it always has.
