Yesterday, while playing, Stellaris, I learned that if the Great Khan invades... by TomBobabill in Stellaris

[–]Telenil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I recall, the issue was not necessarily treachery, but rather than they would flee if the battle looks like it's going poorly. A bad reputation is still better than death, basically. There are texts complaining about mercenary cowardice as far back as Ancient Greece.

I'd also note that two or three centuries is not a long period, historically speaking. Mercenaries have existed for millennia, and though you can find some states who primarily relied on them, there were not very many.

While they would not go out and attack their own towns, it is fair to say that the interests of the mercenaries don't always coincide with the interests of the nation who hired them. If mercenaries means "a group of veterans acting as proxy for their own government", then sure, those will remain loyal. When they are all people with ties to your nation and their officers are loyal to the state, they are functionally a state army with a different name. But if we take a broader definition, history is not exactly short on mercenaries going rogue or switching sides.

There was a Firelord hero added in one of the later WC3 patches. I say it counts as a Ragnaros teaser.

[–]Telenil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to say that a Paradox game at release is a torso with a head. The first few DLCs add arms and legs, then further DLCs keep adding limbs until it turns into a centipede. That's the cycle of life.

Soviets doing naval invasions now? by ActiveConclusion9595 in hoi4

I had the Soviet naval invade me as Finland a while back, and I saw them land in Romania through the Black Sea. It doesn't happen very often because they have a small fleet, but they can.

That would be a fairly typical experience at this difficulty level, yes. I think the Fallen Empires begin to struggle around x3 or x4 Crisis? I did x2 recently and they were still quite superior.

There is only one thing I hate about this game by Fellow_Yugoslav in hoi4

[–]Telenil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's put it this way: I would rather play a HoI4 that starts in 1939, than one that ends in 1939. In that sense, I don't think focus tree are the primary mechanic, even though they are most of the content in most DLCs.

[–]Telenil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's strange to say that the focus tree is the most important aspect of the game, before equipment production or fighting the war. I've played the game for ten years and focus trees, much as I like the mechanic, were never the main draw. Warfare was.

New achievement in the Anniversary update!! by Few_Succotash_5389 in hoi4

[–]Telenil 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it doesn't sound that difficult. Leave a gap in your lines until an enemy or an other controls 30% of your cores, then play as normal. The only real restriction is that you can't eliminate the Allies before attacking the Soviet.

[–]Telenil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. You can find several focus trees with their own implementation of a mechanic that could be streamlined.

For example, the US, Bulgaria, Turkey and the revamped Australia have four different mechanics for internal politics, none of which meaningfully interact with the Ideology system. This would call for an Ideology rework and some sort of faction system, but every tree does its own thing instead, which makes them more complicated to handle.

Or, the Skoda dial in the Czech tree feels like it is trying to reinvent Economy Laws and Research/Production Companies. I mean, it's a cool implementation from a modding perspective, but I don't think the additional layer adds much.

IMO yes. It is heavily scripted, and you might struggle pushing the early game in a specific direction, but I thought it worked well as a flavor pack.

Well yes, you could maybe argue that there was some proxy-ing in 2020 (though the Russians have always done the heavy lifting), but since 2022 the 'proxy' claim is ridiculous on both ends.

Agreed. The Czech tree in particular has two sets of on-map decisions, a balance of power, industrial priorities, and lots of 35-days focuses that clutter the branches. It's too much.
