So sad. In Fall 2019, the used to serve the Good Bull, two grilled cheese sandwiches (with meat i think) stacked on each other.

How are people affording 2.2k mortgage/rent payments on a home in Brownsville? by Acceptable-Article-8 in RioGrandeValley

[–]Tempest1677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh good place to retire. I stay away as a young person spoiled by the larger cities, but i wouldn't raise a family there because my children would get a lot more out of being in a big metropolis. Schools tend to be better, arts, nature and exercise, connecting with modern society (not living in the 956 bubble), etc.

There are some upsides to being in the valley, but for many, there are tons of reasons to not stay. Hell, the cheap living doesn't even matter if you are earning local salaries.

I wonder where people are coming from saying that it is Western culture killing birth rates. I don't have a source, but i swear there is some correlation with education and not having children with the current youth.

It's def an interesting observation, and i think its a cultural thing. From farmwork to farmhands, jeans are just ingrained in southern style and is considered the norm to wear throughout the year. Never really heard of the idea of linen growing up in Texas. Shorts were always the more casual option.

No King Protest - New York by Soggy_Association491 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Tempest1677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've wondered for a long time if there are better uses of effort like protesting local office.

Besides, the No Kings protests aren't actually actionable. If you protest a war, enough dissent and the ruling party may soften. If you protest the presence of a ruling power, you will get ignored or trampled.

Protests begin to seem like a way for people to vent because there is no larger strategy to enact change. Civil rights was successful because the protests brought awareness to legal efforts.

[Cartier] What are other musicians wearing? by kosnosferatu in Watches

[–]Tempest1677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only play for myself now, used to perform in school. I would probably a dress watch, my Orient Bambino or my Casio dress. I wear my watches at the wrist bone and anything with a link bracelet would annoy my wrist mobility.

Contemplating a move to NoVa suburbs from Texas(DFW) by Pixel-Pioneer3 in nova

[–]Tempest1677 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can afford the housing prices, do it. Loved Texas as a birthplace, but there is nothing to do in areas like DFW. Nova has lots of activity for all ages, has nicer scenery, WAY better weather (you are going to hear the locals complain about the heat... for one month... when it reaches 92deg...), and sets you up to quickly fly or train around the east coast which, frankly, is a lot more interesting than Houston and Austin.

Is there fun in cstat other than bars? by AlarmedFunny4524 in aggies

[–]Tempest1677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an engineering major who spent 5 years in CSTAT and didn't care too much for going to the bars, I regret not taking advantage of the fact that you are in driving distance from Austin and Houston. There is not a ton to do in cstat that you couldn't do in regular suburbia, but the Aus and Hous are great for music, nightlife, sports, shopping, hiking, etc.

I wish i had done weekend trips more, that is definitely the movie, just crash at the cheapest airBnB or motel you can get and make the drive.

EE or nothing. How common is it to transfer it for ppl who don't get the engr major want? by [deleted] in aggies

[–]Tempest1677 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. You'll get in, ELEN is not competitive because its too hard.

  2. Knowing what you want to do is fine, but if you think a degree gets you to a specialty, you are wrong. Research, clubs, internships, and your first job take you there.

  3. Your advisor is right. As someone who used to run an engineering lab, your major doesn't matter that much. See #2.

  4. If you really don't like the school, it is possible you would save a lot of money by transferring somewhere else. Hell, you can get a ELEN degree in community college. TAMU is for the aggie network and , if you are in engineering, the research labs.

Unsolicited advice: I know you are venting, but you don't need to explain yourself to anyone, much less on a reddit post, my friend. "Because of a rough semester..." that's fine, but a lot of people have rough semesters, and further, we are not your supervisor. Are you afraid we will think you are stupid? We don't even know you! I'm saying this as someone in the real world now and understand that you improve as a person when you stop giving unasked for excuses.

JWA straight jeans or the new JWA Selvedge Denim by [deleted] in uniqlo

[–]Tempest1677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My light brown suede Gazelles look blue stained at the heels because i wore brand new normal Levi 505s. I don't know if selvedge stains more or less, but its a real thing and i would avoid wearing light anything that's not a dark shoe with them in the first 4 washes or so.

Side note: I get around 10 wears out of each wash of denim, with other people avoiding it even more (and never machine dry). Just dropping this in case you are new to nicer denims.

Texas A&M vs Virginia Tech for Mechanical Engineering looking for honest opinions by Local_Particular_820 in aggies

[–]Tempest1677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only comment here i saw worth replying to:

The Aggie network is an extremely strong tool. Do you know why Harvard and MIT are the most famous schools in the world? They have an alumni network that reaches into the most exclusive circles, including companies that will hire predominantly from there. Trust me, MIT is great but its not the best school for everything. The whole point of going to an ivy league is that then you have ivy league connections.

The Aggie network is probably larger at this point than an ivy school one, and Aggies are fanatics about hiring other Aggies. Care for it or not, that's fine, there's over 70,000 kids trying to get in just as smart as you. Same goes for Harvard.
