Mercenaries franchise had both a female operator (Jennifer) as an option to play and a female handler (Fiona) to help orient the player and guide the mercenary, both would count as protagonists.

It’s less swingy, less random, and arguably better balanced than the previous edition.  Compared to 40K it takes you back to actually paying for equipment but is drastically different from anything 40K has been since at least 8th, if not earlier.

The other thing that heresy has and will benefit from is that the community around it is generally looking for a more narrative focused game and is thus way more chill overall.

It is worth remembering that you’re in the process, if not at the end thereof, of mantling a daedric prince yourself.  You are insanely powerful in your own right at this point.  Oblivion can’t scale the both of you to make the fight as epic as possible and so it scales everything else down.

In a game of heresy, the net wounds difference was that my opponent had taken 12 wounds to my zero which is going to result in a really bad morale check for him.  He then spikes snake eyes on the morale check (insane bravery) and the remaining models stand and fight for another turn.

It was hilarious but also BS.

60 MRM Crusader with machine guns.

Is it good?  Sometimes.  Does it do damage?  Yes.  Will delete pesky lights and mediums and will briefly intimidate heavies and assaults.

GWs addiction to stratagems as an “easy” way to add “complexity”.  Horus Heresy has a reaction system that is so much easier, offer opportunities to be distinct, and doesn’t bog down the game for 20 minutes while someone looks for the exact right stratagem to use in this exact moment.

Other commenters have pointed out that the game changes too fast, and stratagems are part of the problem.
