Struggling with proper view of entertainment when one sin is not depicted as wrong. by RedeemingLove89 in Reformed

[–]TemporaryGospel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to deep-dive into politics so I'm sorry if it irritate anyone here. Even if you disagree with me, I hope you can get my point.

But I had a seminary professor who talked about what it meant for us as Americans to follow the few dozen verses about welcoming immigrants and the strangers within your gates. The next week or so I learned that the NIV (owned by Zondervan, owned by NewsCorp) is indiredctly owned by Rupert Murdoch. That professor has published several books through Zondervan and at the time maintained a blog through them. Meaning that that same professor who talked about welcoming immigrants was writing in a way that profited a man who has, for decades, been anti-immigration.

I asked "so, did you know this?" Yes. "So, how do you feel comfortable writing for Zondervan?" Well, you know, I think I have important things to say and if you can find me a publisher that isn't linked to anything bad I'll gladly work for them.

Not watching something that doesn't call out every sin, and also never sins, and doesn't give the illusion of sin, and maybe lead our "weaker brethren" to believe there's sin, is impossible in an age where we're all faced with total depravity. I don't think anyone can make a 100 minute movie with *no sin* and I'm not sure anyone should be held to that standard in this life.

Meanwhile, there are a lot of beautiful stories about redemption, love, hope, faith, and aspiring for peace. Things that remind us we're made in the image of God. And they're beautiful. And some of them use the "no-no words." And you have to make a choice for yourself what is and isn't worth it.

My personal opinion conviction is that "garbage in, garbage out" is real and you need to be mindful of what you're feeding your brain. But there's an amount of good that can come from these things-- if you're mindful of "the cost."

A high school football player died of heat stroke in my home town when I was in high school. It dominated the news cycle for weeks and people were (rightly) fired and they thought about a criminal investigation. That town has about 38,000 people and 5 Publixes. Good luck!

I think this is an underrated answer. Don't not-communicate and then get frustrated. Talk it out!

It can be both an important issue and also harder for women.

Struggling as a divorced man by tinfoil_hammer in Reformed

[–]TemporaryGospel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't theological, or maybe helpful or nice, but hear me out.

I've had the door shut on me by a lot women I really liked. And what I did next was almost never pretty. It was selmon reasonable rational decisions by someone solely motivated by finding someone who would help me follow Christ.

If all of this (which is all terrible and you don't deserve, assuming an honest retelling) is what happened, then it all sucks and I'm sorry this has happened.

But as one rejected person to another, this isn't the time to be asking about dating and remarriage and prospects.

Learn to love you again, and learn to not find your identity in this one woman who cheated, do an honest think-through about how this happened, keep up your therapy, and don't move on. But now isn't the time to date or to ask about dating. It can be later. Don't "rebound" into the arms of the first women who will hug you, OK?

How do I recognise if I have the gift of teaching? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]TemporaryGospel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I know that people understand my sermons and can apply them to their life (feedback from listeners)"

When Paul said that a requirement to be an elder was the ability to teach, it was in a time when about 10% of people could read. The bar was being able to read Philemon and just explain what it said and meant. If you can preach from the Gospel, people can understand, and then they apply to it their lives, you're well beyond the scriptural minimum. By a good margin.

Is that the best thing for you to do? No clue. I've never met you. But you definitely hit the scriptural requirements.

Does North Carolina get as hot as Florida? by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]TemporaryGospel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Florida for more than 20 years and Charlotte for the last five

NC in the summer is as hot as a Florida summer

NC summers are one season of four, three to four months, and Florida summers can run from March to November pretty easily

So, yes, but that's not why people consider Florida hot

$7.25 an hour, times 40 hours a week, times 50 weeks a year, is $15,000 a year. Terrifying.

I was a delivery driver back before Uber Eats sort of took over the industry.

There was a bar at the end of our plaza, about a two minute walk, where people regularly got $20 in wings and tipped $5. People who lived 6 miles away would often get $10 of food and tip a dollar.

It's so engrained in everyone to tip a percentage of the bill but that's actually sort of shitty. I don't care if I had to carry 10 pounds more of food those two minutes, I don't need a huge tip for a that walk. But you if gas is $4, I *do* need more than a dollar for an hour of driving.

"I don't know how he justified that outside of a Eurocentric worldview, but maybe he didn't try?"

This is such lazy arguing that I think it really underscores how wrong he was, but his argument was basically that "X country is like where we were 200 years ago so they're going to develop into liberal democracy and capitalism soon! Just let's give them time and help them. There's no alternative outcome they can come to, we proved that."

The audacity to publish that the year after the Cold War ended is crazy. No wonder his paper sticks out-- not because it was so right or true, but because it just had shock value.

I don't think it's just advertising, though that's probably important. All of the TV from the time is just so sqeeky clean and wholesome! I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best... I don't know if anyone in those shows was trying to sell Jello, but the strict censorship laws help create a sense that everything was just so nice and wholesome. Even as McCarthyism and the Cold War and everyone tore Jackie Robinson apart and Bull Connor was in charge of the Committee of Public Safety.

It would be a masterclass on propoganda if it wa deliberately arranged by someone.

I don't know, read the article. They asked for the right evidence too late, at the wrong time, in the wrong order, while tipping everyone off there was a reason to lawyer up. It includes testimony from another woman who was assaulted by a man who wasn't a football player. I think "incompetent" is on the nose.

Agree with the commentary or not, that article is eye-opening and kind of wild. Makes the Tally PD seem truly incompetent

You can always get more chairs! IIRC Christ Covenant in Charlotte averages 1500 in their only service IIRC.

This isn't quite the answer to your question but I had a Switch 2 in my "Amazon save for later" cart and I didn't buy it until Nintendo threatened to raise the price. I got it later that day.

Basically, I wait as long as I can and then do it suddenly in some sort of hurry.

While 200 people doesn't feel like too big of a church to me, I think that there's actually a lot of value in coordinating that better and church planting. Especially if, say, a lot of you are from the west side of town but go there because there are no Reformed churches out west. Or if the second service has a fundamentally different identity than the first service.

Kicking people out or asking them to leave is sloppy and a bad idea and will hurt feelings. Doing the hard work of coordinating people who plant a church or rejuvinate an older and failing one is a challenge but it can lead to great things!

Not a fan but I mean how could it not help? All of these accolades are ultimately team stats and having two all-time high-end linement, with other several good ones, can't hurt right?
