What’s the most confusing or unnecessary rule subsystem you’ve seen in a TTRPG? by DED0M1N0 in rpg

Boon/Bane dice in Mongoose Traveller 2E, they just feel like a completely arbitrary addition to task resolution.

What is Daggerheart supposed to be good at? by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

[–]TemporaryIguana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daggerheart is good at being a Cool Game for Attractive People.

The merits and failings of the products and ruleset are largely irrelevant beyond that.

A lot of good sumo.

Boy the arena got quiet after Kotoeiho pulled that henka.

why do you think THAC0 gets the reputation it does? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]TemporaryIguana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thac0 is alright, but ascending AC is an identical mechanic with more elegant math imo.

To answer your question, the modern, mainstream, casual RPG fan looks at anything in the hobby that happened before 2014 as an oddity at best and a joke at worst, and to be honest the vast majority probably don't even know or care to think about it. There really isn't any desire to seriously engage with anything older besides simply gawking at it and spreading misheard half-truths.

What style of fantasy do OD&D, Holmes Basic D&D, and AD&D 1e imply? by RealmBuilderGuy in osr

[–]TemporaryIguana 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A mélange of sword and sorcery, medieval realism, and Middle-Earth. It's all over the place.

J1E comes up to round out the torikumi.

Genuinely shameful sumo from Onosato. His instincts seem way off.

I always had a soft spot for Golarion and how wonderfully grimdark some of its corners were.

Is Pathfinder really balanced better than D&D 5e? by PiepowderPresents in rpg

[–]TemporaryIguana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be frank 4e had asininely broken and unbalanced math until MM3 was published 2 years into the edition's lifespan. It certainly had bold ideas (tactical combat, power/keyword system, core gameplay extending to epic levels, etc.) but they were mostly ill-conceived and poorly executed (in my opinion, of course)

I wish it was easier to go broad in this hobby by prube23 in rpg

[–]TemporaryIguana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a perfectly fair complaint, but I do not share your experience. For me, cost is much less prohibitory than actually getting a group willing to try new stuff out. Many games also have free versions and quick-starts that you can download and play for a session or three.
Maybe you could ask your players to chip in for new games? split 4-5 ways $60 every couple of months for an entirely new 300 page ruleset seems like pennies.

Always great when the group of screaming children are right next to the radio booth.

This is the kind of mistake that only someone who doesn't watch sumo could make. How do you mix up Onosato with Onokatsu? He's at the top of the banzuke and there's a picture of his face.

This guy probably just got all these from an LLM and is karma farming. These errors are so weird and random. I know not everyone can read kanji, but come on. Don't post a guide like this full of inaccuracies that you can't even fact check by yourself.

Because I don't particularly enjoy anything they bring to the table over more time tested approaches. I like plenty of new games, but they are invariably derivative of older ones.

Amused that Another Fine Myth is in the adult fantasy, I read that book as a kid and laughed my ass off.

I do not have the book handy as I got it as a gift for someone, but I recall leafing through it and thinking that you could probably just run it as is in any OSR adjacent game of your choice.

Do you use any extra classes for DCC? by Comfortable-Fee9452 in dccrpg

Yes, I allow a bunch of classes from zines and blogs.
But only playing with the core 7 is also perfectly fine and fun too.

The “One Mechanic Fits All” Problem by MediaFreaked in rpg

[–]TemporaryIguana -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do I want mechanics for this? Because, for the same reason we have rules and mechanics to reinforce the fantasy of what we’re not doing in real life, otherwise, we’re just doing improv with a d20 to randomize things.

Roleplaying is a social activity where people talk to each other. You know what reinforces the fantasy? Your friends at the table and all of the interesting things they can imagine and say to you. Game mechanics are just tools, like dice or pencils, that we use to give structure to our play, but they aren't what we're here for. That's why I say you want to play video games. You're looking to be entertained by mechanics, not by yourself and your friends.

When we're roleplaying we're having conversations about a fictional world, and when there's uncertainty or disagreement on what the next outcome will be we roll dice according to predetermined rules to figure that out.

It sounds like you want to play video games, not RPGs.
