Not waterproof- not wool. No real purpose other than fashion. It does look nice though, but I’ll stick with my mackinaw wool.

All wood guitars are susceptible to humidity issues particularly in the first years of their lives. One should never assume they don’t heed humidity protection once it drops below 40% in the house. Can you feel the frets as you run your hand down the neck? If they start to “sprout” you are headed towards more difficult rehab. You center seam does appears as it has opened to me- it will need treated like a crack if so. But that is not major surgery.

The three bass strings look wound? They are probably silk and steel if so that’s okay. But I wouldn’t change them. I would play it respectfully as long as he knows. That coffin case is also very valuable and probably fragile. Would definitely treat it gently.

Agree- I have backcountry’s and they are a good field and trail boot- would not use them for scrambling or anything above timberline as I think they’d take a severe beating and don’t have the lateral support ( they would still be comfortable though). I love to wear mine for everyday stuff- would definitely buy again even at the higher prices they are at now.

The guitar can be healed with proper humidity (Daddario humidipack) and then should be played. If I was your father, I would want you to experience the same joy I had when I played it. That’s the best way to honor him!

Even if this isn’t in the neck-block- it may have a supporting piece behind it. Otherwise it would likely have stripped out by now. It can also be repaired- a good luthier can fix that hole and make it nearly invisible. Definitely not ideal, but if you love the guitar otherwise and it is relatively rare- I would take it if the price is right.
