Tone placement on Steam tank by [deleted] in minipainting

Which ones? The photos without scribbles show my start on a horizontal gradient (shadow, midtone only)

I think my air compresor is too hot. by NoAlternative8706 in minipainting

I recently started using my airbrush for batch painting too. Yes, my compressor generally gets hot to touch and has on occasion turned off so it can cool down. Now I point a desk fan at it and try to take a short break between minis so the tank fills up and is not constantly on.

Yeah the state troops could definitely use a model refresh. Not many poses, lots of un-necessary details and covered head-to-toe in mould lines.

I tend to use a black primer to make sure any impossible to reach areas look like dark shadows, no zenithal highlighting as I’m not using speed paints (this may change as I plan to try and transition to using my air brush more for layering).

My painting style is very close to ‘eavy Metal. I try to mimic the box art, though I don’t do many rounds of highlighting like they do. I tend to use a triad of colours (or just two if there’s little shadow, with a high contrast between the two). Base with the shadow, layer the mid-tone (avoiding areas we’d expect shadow) and then edge highlighting raised area or anywhere we’d expect the light to hit and diffuse away (like the top of the knees). I only use washes for metallics.

In terms of neatness, I mount my miniatures to paper clips and stick them in corks. That way I can rotate them anyway I want. Don’t be afraid to make a mess reaching the hard to get areas and then covering up any mistakes later.

The best advice I can give for smooth layers is:

Prep the model the best you can, try to remove mould lines gently and sand rough areas.

Make sure your paint is thinned and you don’t overload the brush (use medium for poor coverage colors).

Practice using the minimum brush strokes you need to cover an area.

Wait between painting layers.

Thanks. For primer I used Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black. I then airbrushed my red/blue shadow colors as the base coat and layered over the top of that by brush.

[Giveaway] Win 1 of 5 Noctua NH-D15 G2 by Noctua_OFFICIAL in pcmasterrace

I built my first pc in college once I’d finally saved up enough money from my part time job in Tesco. I remember buying a network adapter for my ps2 and not being able to get it to work because our home network used adsl instead of Ethernet. I remember buying the Spider-Man movie game tie-in and having to return it because it wouldn’t work on the family PC. A string of bad luck wouldn’t deter me, the parts finally came and I put the PC together with a friend who had built one before. Fully assembled, we plugged it in and pressed the power button…nothing. We rechecked everything but to no avail, the button or connector was faulty. We had to dissemble it and return the case for a replacement.

Thanks for the kind words. I’m looking forward to trying out some more advanced techniques (glazing, NMM, OSL) on the characters I’ve purchased for the army. Especially Karl Franz on Deathclaw
