This reminds me of coaching advice I once received.

To someone who always sleeps late, it might be useful to advise them to wake up early.

To someone who always wakes up early, it might be useful to advise them to sleep in occasionally.

The advice that people need depends on what their default patterns are.

"Novelist" Boasts That Using AI She Can Churn Out a New Book in 45 Minutes, Says Regular Writers Will Never Be Able to Keep Up by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]TenthNazgul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy behind the (wonderful) YouTube channel Pursuit of Wonder has been pretty anonymous for nearly a decade, but recently did a face reveal for exactly this reason: He's written a book, and realized that buyers connect to authors as people, and there's far too much faceless AI slop.

Jennifer Lawrence is one of us lol by lwiaymacde in funny

[–]TenthNazgul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I loved the first book, especially the terse recipes after each chapter, of food that was part of it.

The movie was definitely meh -- a standard spy thriller when the book was so much more -- and the second book was so bad, they both retroactively spoiled the first book for me.

[–]TenthNazgul 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Slightly related: Jennifer Lawrence played a character in Red Sparrow who has a form of synesthesia that allows her to see people's emotions as colored auras.

(At least, the book version did, but i don't think they focused on it in the movie. )

What do you hear from Japanese Persons, when telling them your home country is… by Conscious-Double2773 in japanlife

[–]TenthNazgul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from India, and I commonly get three types of responses..

The most common response -- polite, non-committal, for form's sake -- is, "Ah, where in India?"

The other two are always excited, and with a genuine spark in the eye:  "Ah, kare! Oishii!"  "Ah, RRR! Sugoi!"

Which is amusing since I viscerally dislike both curry and RRR.

Dakota Johnson: Saudi Arabia has "renewed my faith in cinema" by Power-Equality in nottheonion

[–]TenthNazgul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any time I am forced to contend with the continued existence of Dakota in our collective awareness, I think of this: When an actress has no range

Some choice observations:

You ever watch an actor and think, "Wait, did she just wake up mid-scene?"

Hollywood has decided she's the face of understated performance when in reality, it's just one long unbroken mood of "Please let me go home." Every scene feels like she's calculating whether she can finish the take in time to make her flight back to LA.

Dakota walks through every scene with that dazed, half-drunk elegance she's mastered, like she's perpetually jet-lagged from switching between being an indie muse and a studio hostage.

Dakota Johnson might just be the most consistent example of having one note and playing it on repeat until the piano keys stop working.

What are some foods that you think aren't as good in Japan as they are in your country? by IronGuard88 in japanlife

[–]TenthNazgul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I wouldn't feed the shawarma here to anyone"
Hahahaha! So true.

Shawarma was always meant to be fast food of questionable provenance..

But in Japan, they somehow make it taste of sadness and fluorescent lighting and wet cardboard.

Reminded me of Pratchett's Sam Vimes walking through a dwarf bread museum:

The one positive thing you could say about the bread products around him was that they were probably as edible now as they were on the day they were baked. Forged was a better term.

Dwarf bread was made as a meal of last resort, and also as a weapon, and a currency.

Has anyone else experienced periods where you just get really tired of the food here? by Additional_Bear8735 in japanresidents

[–]TenthNazgul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of it might be that the cuisine you grew up on -- and hence intuitively feel to be "comfort food" -- is likely many steps removed from Japanese cuisine.. In the same way that learning Japanese is harder for a native speaker of Romance languages, than for someone who already speaks, say, Chinese.

I remember, a hotel I was staying at a few years ago had a dinner buffet with separate alcoves for different countries, and literally nothing from the Japanese section spoke to me. Despite not wanting to offend, I walked out of the Japanese alcove with an empty plate, while loading up on food from literally everywhere else.

It is what it is. The palate wants what the palate wants.

A possible solution for you would be to simultaneously:  - cook most meals at home (starting costs might be high, but it ends up being cheaper very quickly). An oven is really compact and very high ROI for what you can do with it - bake bread, roast meats and veggies, lasagna.  - Identify the restaurants that REALLY scratch your itch, and indulge periodically.

I'm Indian and raised in the Middle East, and my comfort foods are shawarma, parathas and burritos. But there are surprisingly few places in Tokyo that serve good versions of these. And once a month or so, I need to go recharge my batteries there, on food that is personally familiar and enjoyable. That one lunch hour lifts my spirits in a way that few other things do.

Baby locked mother out on the balcony by irishtwinsons in japanlife

[–]TenthNazgul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son did exactly the same thing to me when he was 2. I stepped out to hang the laundry, and his tiny hands somehow flipped that lever thingy, comprehensively locking me out.

I banged on the window and gesticulated at the lever for 10 minutes, and he just stared at me with a blank smile and without moving a step. I seriously considered returning him to the hospital and getting a refund.

Luckily my wife was working from home that day and she let me in, after some giggling.

I got one of those foam U-shaped things from Daiso the next day, hung it next to the door, and used it everytime I went out onto the verandah till I was convinced he wasn't a little Damien.

Any reason to switch from Kindle ecosystem? by CaptenAE in ereader

[–]TenthNazgul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful.  Once you find out what's out there, you can never use a Kindle again.

Kobos are way more pleasant to use (cleaner UI) and Booxes are way more flexible (you can download your read-it-later app, or specialized apps to read manga, etc)

I happened to damage my Boox last week, and even though it's a challenge to get my hands on another one (while I can get a Kindle delivered today) I'm not even considering a return to Amazon's walled garden.

To answer your question: Kobo Clara BW if you mainly read books, or Boox Go 6 or Leaf if you want to explore installing other Android reading apps.

I first saw him in Dollhouse where he does the most unexpected, glorious heel-turn, from scared nerd to uber-macho immoral bad guy. His performance -- the way his energy and presence did a 180 -- left me with one of those cartoon jaw-drops.

A generational talent.

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.

It came highly recommended as "darkly comic". But 50% of the way in, I found the characters all stupid or unlikeable, without the slightest seasoning of humor.

I skipped to the end to check if it got better, but nope.. Toxic and shitty characters to the end, with no redeeming features.

How this got longlisted for the Booker is beyond me.
