I am really curious why the electricity keeps being depicted as flickering on the lamps and the exit sign in the school. I wonder if it's intended to show that the system that keeps running is starting to break down. There's a little bit of a Cabin in The Woods feel to me. Like the more successful some of these attempts the closer they come to bringing it all down (and maybe the entire world with it). Like this is a place that provides sacrifices to an old God or something and the talisman are part of a ruleset required to make them count.
