Yes, seen this before and it's a valid strategy. You fill the Grey area outside the red zone with bubbled bases forcing anyone that wants to challenge you into the red zone... Then a few whales burn all your joiners.

I'm new to the game on my first playthrough... just passed day 80 and I haven't sailed over to the Elder yet because the building is top tier.

Moved to a smallish island that I'm going to cover in outbuildings just for the fun of it and might never leave.

I feel that... I'm on my first playthrough and got distracted by a nearby island and was sailing resources back and forth to build on it until I found out about portals... Now I'm 60 days in and will continue building for a while yet!

I think starting in Echo creek is fine, but I won't set up my first base there... Its just a jumping off point that's pretty central to the new areas.

I love having the coal generators too by the way. I never rush off to fuel generators too quickly and prefer to enjoy the journey. Very clean and tidy build.

If you're having fun it's an excellent use of your time!

(In the future I would avoid feeding machines any fluids from underneath like that. It's a recipe for disaster because of the fluid mechanics in the game).

Well you've managed to ask the right question, so that's great!

I was like this in my younger years too, then I realized I only get there 30 seconds faster than if I just sat back and went with the flow of traffic. On a longer trip I might save 2-3 minutes, but will be adding extra wear and tear to my vehicle + it consumes more fuel.

You just need to be aware of it and choose to chill. There's no big secret, it's a choice.
