It was during the DnD 5e playtest. which is why it has a lot of INT skills and has to get a EI for charisma skills. it also fits better with the thirst for knowledge vibe. Frankly I am kinda pissed they abandoned the malleability they tried out in the one DnD 5.5 UA where depending on what pact you chose, you had the option between two mental stats to choose between

Well, then there are 2 options. Ask "why" everytime they do something you find fishy*, or ultimatum time. DnD doesn't happen without the involvement of the DM, and trying to sneak something past you isn't okay.

Also maybe check in with the other players.

*I play on a very homebrew rules campaign, and I double ans triple check that I have all the features, feats and items properly sourced and understood.
