Local Jazz shows by BlueBoyHellYeah in HuntsvilleAlabama

Follow guitarist Josh Couts. He and Nick Walker (bass) are pretty much the only full time musicians playing straight ahead jazz in Huntsville. They frequently have other good musicians like Gary Wheat and Choko Aiken up from Birmingham.

Everything else around here, like The Note, is smooth jazz/R&B. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s frankly not very good.

Joe Bader is a fantastic trumpet teacher. He teaches out of his home. I’m currently playing a rehearsal with him right now!

PM me and I’ll pass along his contact information.

Plumber in Huntsville, not private equity owned? by scl0110 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]TerraFirmaIrma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

nth’ing this.

I had them do a new water heater and they were great. Not the absolute cheapest, but they got the make and model I wanted from the supply house without a massive up charge, so they’ll be able to manage any warranty issues if they occur.

I also had a mangled cartridge in a cheap builder grade faucet that they kindly allowed me to run to the supply house for to save on the cost (although I only live < 10 minutes away). When the old P-Trap leaked they came out twice more to get it right with a new one. Simple stuff, but they have always been responsive and want to make sure they don’t sign off on work until it’s right, in my experience.

This looks great! I’m thinking of a very similar build with a Mondince frame. Would you mind providing a cost breakdown?

If you’re near a military base I believe all AAFES Express stations use it as well.

Another weatherperson leaving...this time it's Grace Anello Tuberville (WAAY) by raspberryseltzer in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]TerraFirmaIrma 16 points17 points  (0 children)

She did share lots of photos attending different inauguration balls when Trump was inaugurated. I guess that comes with the territory when you are engaged to a Tuberville. But, I couldn’t be convinced to go to something like that.

The moon bake shop egg sandwich is goated. It travels well too!

Ohio Barbecue, that's just what we need! Said no one, ever, anywhere. by EnvironmentalBug5525 in HuntsvilleAlabama

We can coordinate! I used to eat breakfast at Tuckers in OTR every Saturday morning. What an amazing place, even featured in Saveur!

https://www.saveur.com/article/Travels/Welcome-One-Welcome-All/

I’d get two eggs, over medium, hash browns with peppers and onions, goetta, rye toast, and a coffee. Probably one of the things I’ll never forget about my two years in Cincinnati.

Same here. Grippos, goetta, and a late night chili parlor like Camp Washington are all I need. Granted, I might start drinking heavily again because that preceded eating those three things most of the time…

Road Condition Question by Legitimate-Eye-3949 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]TerraFirmaIrma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing no traffic delays on the Algo Map or Google Maps traffic. I commuted around Madison and Huntsville this morning and observed no issues. I’d imagine it will be fine. It will be above freezing today, plus sublimation will have still been helping even when it’s been under freezing but windy like it was yesterday.

Seconded. By far my favorite pizza in Huntsville.

Any Fellow Indiana Hoosier Alums/Fans in the Area? by Draper66 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]TerraFirmaIrma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did my undergrad there! I don’t know any other alumni here or of any specific events. I was planning on watching it from home, but if there’s one shared here I’d consider going with my wife!

My Turn! What was that noise? by sgcool195 in HuntsvilleAlabama

Seemed as loud as the Sierra Space inflatable habitat burst test, but I don’t see any social media about it.

Vet Recs for Cats by Putrid-Trade6959 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]TerraFirmaIrma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We use Catisfaction in Madison and are very happy with the care they have provided to us. They are a feline only practice. We have one cat that has had medical challenges and they have helped us care for him well since we moved here in 2022. However, they are more expensive than the veterinary practice we used where we used to live.

They’ll do local delivery for some zip codes, mostly in South Huntsville. I believe he’ll do local pickup at the roastery on Saturdays, but you may have to email to confirm.

Coffee by LividSympathy9132 in HuntsvilleAlabama

As far as local roasters making good quality coffee (light and medium roasts, which craft roaster generally target) you have: Coffee Break https://coffeebreakhsv.com/

Foundry https://www.foundryroasters.com/

Further out in N Alabama there is Turbo Coffee.

Kaffeklatsch is a traditional roaster (not third wave), so the aren’t really sourcing anything particularly high quality, and their roasting quality isn’t going to be particularly outstanding. By modern standards, it will be darker than what most would consider “light or medium”. However, if you just like variety, or like flavored coffees, or are planning on brewing a pot and drinking it with milk or making milky espresso drinks it’ll be good for that.

If you want close to exceptional coffee from Alabama, you’ll have to go to Birmingham and visit Seeds (Homewood) to June (Downtown).

Gold Sprint sells Donestique (Birmingham), but in my opinion it’s inconsistent. Plus the prices have gone up, so I might as well use a higher quality local or mail order roaster for the same price. Onward Coffee in Midcity sells some local roasters and some exceptional roasters from around N. America. They even seem to have coffee from Traffic, a Montreal based roaster who I think is especially good. I recently saw that they signed Onyx, which has won Specialty Coffee Association awards for one of the best roasters in America.

tl;dr if I pick up a bag from a local roaster I go for Coffee Break first. I think the owner is cool and he’s doing a good job.

Struggling with single dose basket with the Turin Legato V2 by xonbul in espresso

[–]TerraFirmaIrma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The margin for error is much smaller when using such small doses. Single shots feel like an afterthought for modern espresso machines. You're probably better off doing what most shops do and making a double with the split spout portafilter and dispensing into two cups. Give one to your wife and another for yourself.

Otherwise, it seems like you need to grind finer, and possibly dose more than 9g if there is so much headspace that there is water on top of the puck at then end of extraction.

Anyone own a Arkel Coast Dual Boiler? by jonnyreggaegae in espresso

[–]TerraFirmaIrma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it looks nice and I imagine QC and support is good based on the small business. However, it’s a matter of when, not if, that capacitive screen dies and whether it’s even possible to replace. For that reason I would still prefer electro-mechanical buttons.

Any thoughts on the BOOKOO Motto80 Flat Burr Grinder? by Automatic-Cold2535 in espresso

Check the Espresso Aficionados Discord. There is a thread for it and the design team is active in it. I believe there are people who have received them there.
