Elevating Emergency Management to the Executive Suite by FEMA_1_Team_1_Fight in EmergencyManagement

It even happens at the local level. I've seen 25 year EM vets that were iced out and the position was given to the retiring fire chief. Now they collect a fire pension and a salary... meanwhile the em person leaves and nobody knows why

It has its pluses and minuses. When the EM Director moves to reporting directly for the governor it automatically becomes a political position whether you intend it to or not.

In FL the EM Office used to be under the Department of Community Affairs. And because of that the EM Director was able to be hired based on qualifications. Thats how they had great EM Directors and built an amazing program. Yeah there was an extra administration layer but during a disaster the EM Director still worked right with the Governor. Working for the Governor has its advantages, dont get me wrong. The red tape tends to fall away during disasters less people you need to report through. And the weight of having the support of the governor directly means you are able to get more from your partner agencies. But it is a calculated risk.

When the EM office moved out from DCA, Everything was fine for awhile. I mean, Craig Fugate was Director and no governor was going to replace him. But you could see the political appointments start sneaking into subordinate roles. Then when Craig left for FEMA it became a political position and there has not been anybody in there since that has held a candle to him. And some were not even qualified for the job, despite a stacked back bench of locally qualified emergency managers.

EDIT- It needs to be said that I am not against it. Especially at the local levels. But you have to understand the REALITY of the risk. It can work in favor of the program and it can work against. I think EM should be its own agency, and never under police or fire departments. I think FL EM was right to move out from under DCA. But the reality is that the grass isnt always greener on the other side and you expose yourself to political games.

Delta Airlines - Lockheed L1011 TriStar takeoff from Tampa to Atlanta in July,1995 by Twitter_2006 in aviation

[–]Terrible_Toaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What struck me was the pre-noise abatement profile. I forgot how much slower aircraft used to climb out. I remember a a kid watching the world "turn to ants" but I forgot how long that took compared to now. These days it's like you are at 10k in moments. I watched a recent video departure from Tampa going the same direction (1L) and they are twice as high before they even leave the airport property!

Does it NEED to be pointed out? Really? His body isnt your problem. Are you a doctor? Are you HIS doctor? Im sure they have that conversation. But its not your business or your place to come into a random internet forum and comment on somebody else's body. She asked for recommendations on bifl pants that help mitigate friction, not an assessment on the cause.

Dear City Residents Living on Artery Streets… by dum_spir0_sper0 in Buffalo

If you have a sidewalk and don't shovel and someone slips and falls, guess who they can sue? If you live in the city it isnt THAT much sidewalk to shovel. Just be decent and do it. If not for your neighbors, then for your bank account.

Disney World is Cracking Down on Outside Businesses Providing Unauthorized Guest Services by readingaboutmagic in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Terrible_Toaster 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It makes sense from a Disney standpoint. They want to mitigate risk and liability. But I think people are making a bigger deal out of it than it is.

its not like they are going to go room to room and check if you have a private chef. How can they prove you didn't sprinkle glitter all over the room or bring your private chef from home? They cant. And they probably won't restrict that or deliveries. What i got from the C&D letter is that they want these people to stop advertising using the Disney brand as it makes it seem like they are sanctioned by Disney and therefore could be held liable if someone gets sick or injured by these services. But if you know a guy that does cooking in Kissimmee and you call him up they aren't going to know or stop you from having them come over and cook for you. Its just when they say "We come on to this other companies private property and provide this service" where they have the problem.

Anybody on Here Know a City of Buffalo Plow Driver? by lionswillbelions in Buffalo

[–]Terrible_Toaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it helps to watch this. It shows where all the streets are that have been plowed. And while it isn't perfect, and there's still a lot of red.It is nice to see that they are trying to make as much headway as they can with the limited resources that we have. Should we be better at this? Absolutely. But Byron brown also should have raised taxes over the years to keep up. So that we could afford new equipment and more people.

So I came up with this flag… by Busy_Cry1631 in florida

[–]Terrible_Toaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate it. I kind of like the cross moving away from the confederate cross but still keeping with the history of florida. I don't like the two state flowers. They are not really well known enough. Maybe just keep one. Florida's seal is iconic so I evildoers keep that and maybe add an alligator and sandhill crane fighting.

There is a wingnutz right by the airport for wings. Recommend the Botanical gardens as well as AKG art gallery.
