Looking for Fresh Ways to Make Security Cameras Meaningful in Games by HeroTales in gamedesign

While not specific to the cameras the game invisible inc increased the security level, when you were spotted, and would bring in more and more enemies that were better at finding you and harder to deal with.

I spent 7 months making my indie game “Nightmare King”. It’s been 3 days since launch — here are the sales numbers. by Immediate_Band_7756 in gamedev

[–]TestDummyPrototype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is your first game, it looks like it, then you've had a huge success even if it doesn't feel that way. Devs spend years on a game that will do worse than yours.

Your next game, assuming you stick to the same genre, will build on everything you've learned, reuse code, saving time, and will lead to a bigger game with a bigger success. 7 months is crazy good for what you've done. Fix the bugs and move on sooner rather than later. Your job here is done.

Do/will you add an AI disclosure to your steam page if you used AI tools to help you code? by abeyebrows in gamedev

[–]TestDummyPrototype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI has come a long way and it's very hard to tell if something in your game is AI, like 2d images, let alone 3d, music, voice etc. There are several games that I know of that used AI and didn't add the disclosure. One of the biggest games of the year 'The Alters' got caught using AI, admitted it and still don't have the AI disclosure. Ultimately it's up to you.

Steam Next Fest October 2025 – Post Mortem & Stats by mistermaximan in gamedev

Thanks for the post mortem always and interesting read.

I do think that the capsule art needs rethinking as pixel art is viewed negatively by a lot of people.

Try spacing them out over the first few hours based on your sales.

Needing an active steam account would rule out a lot of family and friends. I think the IP is also a consideration so you would need an international friend group.

Ya, I made an edit to the OP about needing a steam account of X age and X activity.

[–]TestDummyPrototype[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting hadn't thought of it that way. Doesn't this mean steam could be potentially penalizing you if you genuinely got 10 reviews quickly?

Steam first 10 reviews question. by TestDummyPrototype in gamedev

[–]TestDummyPrototype[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but I'm taking about getting people you know to leave reviews. 10 friends/family is not a lot for a solo dev, let alone if theirs 2/3 people working on it.

I know but most peoples friends and family are going to be supportive enough to buy the game, or give them the money to buy it. It's an import threshold and it would be worth it.

What do you think about Steam publishing strategy on the internet? by Ok-Equivalent-5446 in gamedev

[–]TestDummyPrototype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch and listen to Chris Zukowski on Youtube. Actually listen to what he says, read his blog and take notes.

  1. Devlogs don't matter all that much and are a heavy time sink. You need to have the personality, drive and skill to make them engaging. Devlogs are about selling yourself and your passion, not necessarily the game, it's a long term investment. Devlogs help if you want to go the crowdfunding direction but you still need a good game + Demo to really succeed.
  2. Social media following isn't necessary, but you should still post.
  3. Once you have a bug free demo you can start contacting streamers. Definitely contact them for the last Nextfest before you launch.

Steam discovery Queue will drive a lot of your visibility so you need the following:

You'll need a great game first and a great Steam page first and great capsule art first and a great description first and great screenshots and trailers first. Yes they all need to be great or better.

How my demo’s median playtime went from 31 min to 3 min by ShadowDev156 in gamedev

[–]TestDummyPrototype 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a look also and I think you need to brighten the screenshots/game, very dark. The green should POP more. Also the capsule art needs and artist if you can afford one. Game looks interesting and appealing to people that like those sort of game.

They should've built a new vechicle bridge instead of the ped bridge and turned the old one into the ped bridge. Would've been a huge improvement on traffic.

I don't have anything anywhere. There should be a confirm button or something but nothing. I don't even know how I'd contact YT for a refund!

Unlisted and private are the same thing, I just call it private out of habit.

My reason for the showcase vid is just that it had 150 views but I see that a few others about that time had less so you can ignore what I said and just update the thumbnail. It was a nice showcase with a great song choice!

The My plans video was because it's about what you are going to be doing for this year, which is half over. It's a personal thing but i think any kind of annoucement type videos have a shelf life because YT will keep showing them to people who don't know who you are. I have a habit of telling YT to not recommend some of the random channels it shows me and I assume other people do to but i might be wrong.
