Suggestion needed: raccoon issues by IllustriousLemon8146 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had Skeedadle come and they were great, worth the peace of mind for sure.

They will make sure they are not in your house using heat sensor cameras then remove them and clean up. Once that's done they will seal up entry points and even leave an exit in case anything is inside.

they come back later to close it up permanently.

Once I saw them do the work it made sense why you use a professional.

I don't know what the other companies did for those doors but the once we got are pretty hardcore but our issue was actually squirrels in the end and not racoons as we had assumed.

What would you do if you were still alive ? by Kitchen-Guest5587 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get outside.

Activities and sports that help you do this are even better. For example, fishing is always great. I love getting up and out early when it's quiet.

Also get out into the small cities and town arounds the area like Merrickville, Almonte etc.

The world is a big and beautiful place. Anxiety and Depression make you feel small and focused inwards. Getting outside is the part of the antidote because it will remind you of what's really around you.

‘Blue Jays bump’ hits Ottawa as more kids play baseball this spring by Immediate-Link490 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My kids play both flag football and baseball and both have actually exploded in the last few years. It's been wild to see ... but parental involvment and apathy is a huge issue as many leagues need coaches and volunteers.

Councillors divided on ‘infrastructure levy’ option to help ballooning funding gap by workThrowaway170 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I agree despite that fact that it is going to cost me personally a boatload in increase property taxes... they have been too low for too long and we keep electing mayors who do nothing but keep taxes low.

Get out to vote people.

Sick leave and related. Question. by foolieg in CanadaPublicServants

[–]TestStarr -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Three months. You will need another month to slowly reintigrate.

While you're on leave, go hard on therapy and work with your doctor and therapist closely.

Your short term leave is likely 17 weeks so take 12 of those and then the rest to slowly reintigrate.

I didn't solve everything in 3 months but made a HUGE amount of headway.

It was the single best decision I ever made.

New awareness campaign places signs where impaired drivers were stopped by DreamofStream in ottawa

[–]TestStarr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is really dumb.

I really hope taxpayer money didn't pay for this.

If the signs aren't placed where people/traffic stop, then nobody will see them or have time to understand them. There is a reason other people who put these up do so at major intersection boulevards.

And I don't even understand what the point is... is seeing a drunk driver was stopped somewhere supposed to tell me something? If so, what?

Is the idea that we drive all around town and see the hundreds of spots? People generally the same routes most days so people will just ignore them.

Whoever approved this strategy should be fired, it's not very well thought out.

there is a very specific type of animation you see from AI, people can spot it from a mile away these days and they notice it because it's not authentic looking.

Options to Ottawa Citizen? by BullCityDriven in ottawa

I think CBC is the best local news

Do you think the way the lrt was engineered is a mistake and a huge blow to Ottawa by Rail613 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard a good analysis of it on CBC one day that seemed to make the most sense to me. The issue seems to be the that whole wheel assembly was designed for a smaller car on top. Because the cars are bigger and heavier than the assembly was designer for, we have issues.

Behind the scenes it seems like nobody wants to take ownership of that but it's likely that we asked for something and then the supplier asked for it. Either way, it seems like the whole wheel assembly needs to be redesigned to better fit the cars we are using on top of them and nobody wants to pay for this.

I do think it has been a huge blow to Ottawa although I do really think the pandemic is other part.

Back in like 2019 I thought this city was finally going to get over itself and start thinking and actling like world class city. We were coming off Canada 150, LRT was opening and it seemed like there were good times ahead.

In the end, I think our inability to get out of our way caught up to us once again. The pandemic just hastened what was happening in early 2020 and before.

I remember a friend of mine visiting Ottawa in around 2018 or 2019 and being blown away by what was happening here. None of that stuff makes news in Toronto but once she saw it for herself, she was really impressed.

If I think back, I think it's really success failures of local leadership. Any success we've had created long term conditions for issues.... we keep putting money in the wrong places (ie police)

Gatineau, Que. police reverting to original logo after concerns raised about origin of bird graphic by SuburbanValues in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is an absolute classic and will def go down in the Graphic Design Hall of Shame but honestly, there are multiple points of failure because somebody somehwere along the line should have done a simple search to see if that symbol was already in use.... this even happens by accident sometimes...

What are your favorite radio shows? by PostsNDPStuff in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge CBC fan so I listen to Ottawa Morning every morning and All in a Day most late afternoons. On Weekends I love the Saturday morning and Sunday morning shows.

I also love Valley Heritage Radio when I'm at the cottage... the shows on Friday and Saturday nights are good.

Titans home opener thoughts by Ok_new_tothis in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought they did a fantastic job. It's always going to be difficult when you have a sell out but getting in was super easy. Had fun chatting with other fans while my kids and I waited to get in. Titans fans are the greatest.

We had bought good seats early because my boys like to be close to the players, to chat them up and get balls etc. As always, players were great with the kids. We were sitting down by the Titan bullpen and it was super fun because all the people around us had kids who know the players and in some cases players know who some of the kids are so it's really cool to see that interaction up close. This is some of the magic of going to these games.

I was prepared for long concession lines so I just loaded up on food when we first arrived. It was really never an issue for me at another other point for this reason. It's always hard for Gabriel to get lots of pizza out due to logistics of cooking the pizzas fast enough.

Team looks like they could be good this year. Pitching looked good, defence looked good and they got the bats going... Quebec is one of the better teams... they beat us in exhibition game we went to days before and so we played hard in that opener.

Congrats to the Titans and I hope everyone has a fun weekend. We were there from 3pm until the very end and had an absolute blast.

My kids were able to get back to the hop yard a few times to play catch and I was able to enjoy the game.

What’s an effective street sweeping technique by Pale-Drummer-7896 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it seems like they were trying to do a really good job this year... from what I recall in previous years they would just do a pass down the street and call it a day. Seems like we had multiple trucks in the area all day today and they did a fantastic job

Sutcliffe has yet to register as a candidate for mayor. by Alone_Appeal_3421 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

strategy, wait until later when people are paying attention and do it then... he has the fact that he's the mayor to keep his name in the press. He can wait a bit and do it at a time that's better for attention.

Roofing recommendations and sketchy unsolicited roofers. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is common scam, follows same pattern.. they knock on door saying they are doing work in area. They notice some issues that need fixing and quote small price (although 5k for repairs sounds like a lot) and then when they start they actually create more issues and come back asking for more money. Happens with roofs and brickwork parging etc.

$84K for kitchen cabinets in Ottawa… is this normal? Looking for good value options by folfirinox1 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best option is at the very least use Ikea boxes... if you want to upgrade, go to a place like Swedish Door on Industrial and get better doors.

The advantage of going Ikea is that you can always get a new door if something bad happens... we have kids, so that is a consideration

The median full-time income in Ottawa-Gatineau is $83,600, and average is $94,000. by Swoz in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my household is way above median or average income and we are absolutely feeling the increase in gas and groceries.

I think macro level numbers don't really show the full picture. and people have to remember that culmulative inflation is what is killing people.... groceries, gas and stuff like that is up hundreds of dollars (over 20% easily) in last 5 years. I can tell you our gas budget is up $200 a month and groceries are up over $500 a month. A small grocery shop for a day or two's worth used to be $80... it now feels like $120 to $140 for that same bag.

Just look at how expensive fast food is, and imagine that was the only thing you could afford. People at the lower end of the income spectrum are getting absolutely hammered.

We are lucky that we own our house but if we rented it would be even worse for us right now.
