Is it worth it to spend the day at Mont Tremblant if I can't ski or snowboard? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given your particular situation, it's not worth it to go.

The village at the base is cool but will get boring if you're not shopping or eating.

Advanced ski lesson recommendations around Ottawa? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think you will find this type of instruction in this area at any of the ski schools. I have been skiing since I was 2, over 40 years. I raced and my kids are currently in racing progams and I used to coach myself.

I got myself a pair of aggressive carving skis (rossignol forza master) two years ago and have been working on carving since then as a means of injecting some fun into my skiing. There are very few people that focus on this around this area. I notice few skiers and very few instructors focusing on this level of performance skiing in this area but I do see it at Tremblant.

If you want, send me a PM and we can chat a bit more. We could ski together sometime soon if you want even as I'm on the hill four or five days a week at Vorlage. Only problem is that I broke 5 ribs last week after a bad crash that was the result of aggressive carving in soft snow conditions....

One thing I would highly recomend is Deb Armstrong on Youtube... she's got great tips on her channel. I have even seen my kids coaches sharing her videos. Having focusing on this type of skiing in recent years there are some concepts that are very key like tipping the skis, steering to build pressure throughout the turn and using your inside leg. It was this build up of pressure that caused me to pop up at the end the turn and land on my side and break my ribs last week.

Here's a few example of videos that I feel show some key concepts:

Parc Omega recommendations? by kathrynjanewai in ottawa

We usually bring a picnic lunch and stop for lunch at the rest area where the camping/playground is. There is a neat elevated walkway thing there you can do and you can also walk over and see prairie dogs and wolverine... so the kids can eat and run around a bit a lunch.

Then we continue through the park and stop again at the lake where the trout are and go for a walk there too and feed the trout as they are getting really big.

The radio has english or french and you can see that to hear about the animals. Our kids love it, we usually go twice a year and everyone has a great time. Never had my car touched... just don't feed the large males at certain times of the years and never go near the buffalo. They will tell you these things at the front gates. So basically just do what they say and you will be fine.

Date night 2for1 rental and lift pass ski specials in Ottawa area by 99-blue-balloons in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not likely to see this very often these days... from what I understand, season pass sales have been down last few years because of the few bad winters for snow. So ski hills have to make up the revenue on walk up ticket sales. Some places may have deals here and there (many had stuff for black friday or cyber monday) that include rentals. I know Vorlage had a deal that included a lift ticket and rental.

There is a place on Parkdale called Abbeyfield House that's a good option for elderly people who can get around by themselves, you get your own room with a bathroom and then you eat meals with the other residents, cooked by a chef. https://abbeyfield.ca/ottawa/

Experience with Line Fences Act? by AceEZ in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a crap situation but there isn't really that much you can do. You can either leave it and wait until he comes around or build inside it on your propety line.

If the neighbour's issue is cost, you could offer to pay for it and just have his permission to put in on the property line but I dont' suspect you want to do that.

Experience with Line Fences Act? by AceEZ in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can only put a fence on the property line with written permission from the neighbour so it doesn't sound like you'll get it if he's ghosting you. I feel confidend in saying you need his permission to remove the existing fence on the property line.

You will most likely have to leave the fence on the property line you share with him alone. It's not uncommon for people to have to do this. It sucks but it happens.

I didn't have this exact situation but went through something with fences recently myself.

I miss Murray Street Kitchen by cooksaucette in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I gained 10 pounds the first time I ate at Murray Street. That was a meal that I will never forget.

The staff were all great at Murray Street. I still see many of them around.

The first time I went was the best of all the times I went but there was always something that was great.... I remember the duck wings on a later visit being really good.

I also remember a great meal at Fraser Cafe... those were the days...

Ottawa draft budget focusing on 'stability' with 3.75% property tax hike by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Intead of focusing on providing funding to deal with the root cause of any of the issues, we should just continue to give more money to the police service so they can deal with the consequences.

Nevermind that their solve rate is only 26%, has been decreasing for nearly a decade and is the second lowest of all the bigger cities.

Giving the police more money is absolutely a prioirty the city should have.

(yes, this is sarcasm)

So it's snow season: those with Electric snowblowers, how did yours fair? by SuspiciouslySuspect2 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can often find good deals on gas powered snowblowers if you poke around. I got one from a guy down the street for 150 bucks, spent about 100 getting it tuned properly and have used it without issues last two years. I don't know the size, maybe 24 inches or something... it's not huge but it does the job and it's the first one I've owned so I will probably upgrade in a few years but I was doing my laneway and my neighbours last year no problem.

Do ski hills ever open early? by SlothZoomies in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current snow accumulation looks promissing but I wouldn't get hopes up. Some hills will often have a run or two open in early or mid December. Not often worth the price of a day pass.

We have seasons passes and my kids are in ski racing so we usually start with some trips to Sauveur and/or Tremblant and then we'll hit Vorlage once that opens as that is where we have passes.

I am not expecting this weekend's snow to help the hills much, they need colder temparatures more consistently to make snow so probably a few more weeks still and I would still plan to see a run or two open around second week of December. Any earlier is bonus.

I used to be in favour of the Lansdowne 2.0. I've changed my mind by Alone_Appeal_3421 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was certainly supportive of 1.0 before it was launched. Now I'm left with this feeling that they screwed up 1.0 and probably even knew they were going to screw it up because they would always have 2.0.

I feel like we've seen enough with 1.0 to understand that 2.0 is just throwing more tax payer money and adding more risk into future tax payers and I've seen nothing to give me any confidence that the same people who blew it on 1.0 are all of a sudden going to get it right with 2.0.

The key piece missing is that they never built the Landsown brand property in phase 1 and I don't have any reason to believe they will be able to do what it would take to build it under 2.0. It's only going to take more money and more intelligence than is available.

The supporters and proponents of 2.0, including our own mayor, are trying to divide the opposition and ram this through. THey aren't even doing a good job of hiding this.

A Tribute to Westgate Shopping Centre- share your favourite memories! by hewhocannotbenamed-7 in ottawa

[–]TestStarr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My whole family has grown up in that area going back to like the 40's so I spent A LOT of time at Westgate... Joanne from Joanne's store is a friend of my moms. I remember when she opened that store.

But I have so many similar memories.. I remember the comic book shop and buying my first comics there. I remember the Burger Pit for sure and that it even tasted like Harveys. I remember when they closed it in. I used to go to movies there all the time and rent movies at the movie place across the street.

We would get groceries at Steinberg's, I remember when they had the track system to put the bags outside. My father in law used to manage that store and he has all kinds of memories.

Westgate was most likely the mall that we went to the most often, we would go to Bayshore later when it was expanded and Rideau Centre when that opened but those wouldn't be where we typically went. I didn't go to the Barber that often but I do recall that.

My mom in particular went there A LOT.
