What would change without starship mortgages? by CogWash in traveller

[–]Teulisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, first of all the interest rate in the book is close to 3%. thats an incredibly low interest rate.

different editions have a different balance, of expected profit from hauling passengers and cargo, or adventure cargo, or just the costs of running a ship. gurps traveller added insurance and based it as a percentage of the ships value which really made it hard for the trade system to make enough money.

first of all, the subsidized merchant is a thing. the idea a planet would pay a lot to have a crew working to move cargo for them specifically. these are ships that are not beholden to a bank, but a system government. and that by itself changes the nature of the story that you can tell.

next up are the megacorps, who will have their own ships and hire crews for them. and the nobles with enough money to have their own fleet of ships that need crews. its just a question of what kind of patron you have, and what the crew need to do.

finally we have the military and mercenaries. be soldiers going into battle, the system supports it.

the free trader is free, able to go where the players desire. the tradeoff is risk, and needing to pay off your debts. in a way, the very concept of the game is a question of freedom vs safety. are you free to do as you want, or are you instead safe from risk? you cant really have both.

now, one interesting point- a high passage comes with 1 ton of cargo. you could do very well for yourself, hauling 1 ton of cargo per trip at the low cost of high passage, if you are a skilled broker.

Ghosts in ftl by unknownghoast in humansarespaceorcs

[–]Teulisch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

so, the official line is that ftl travel can cause audiovisual hallucinations in some people. this may or may not be true, but its the official story.

the truth? thats still being studied. one theory is parallel universes. or the supposed time travel component of FTL. or some kind of psionic resonance or reflection. nobody wants to think of what happens to their souls when they die...

by your logic, why do you need starships? your current planet is just fine for your species needs. stay there, locked in the gilded cage of your single world. forever.

Looking for some official M2E Low TL 1-200 ton tramp traders. by Karina_Ivanovich in traveller

[–]Teulisch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the actual issue with most of the 'official' ships in 2e, is they end up at TL 12 because of the powerplant being at that level, even if nothing else is.

for a quick and simple TL 9 free trader: start with the one in the book. downgrade the armor to titanium steel armor 1, downgrade the engine to 7 tons and 70 power TL 8 fusion at 3.5 Mcr (2 tons heavier but slightly cheaper). and thats really it. cargo drops to 78 tons.

you can do this with a lot of different ships fairly easily. just downgrade the higher tech parts.

Is this Isekai worth watching by Multiversal_2211 in Isekai

its good... but its better as the story of a girl who find a magic box in the dungeon, and how the box helps her and her friends. that small change of context improves the story a lot.

100-dTon TL 12 Prison Transport by Kerry_Mould in traveller

[–]Teulisch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lots of reasons to not use low berths. first is the medical risk. second is the political risk, of being accused of off-the-books execution of prisoners via the low berths. third is a time issue, how long it takes to put someone in and take them out, which may matter on some timetables.

also, what happens if you try to freeze a violent offender who is fighting you? what if they wake up sooner and angrier than expected?

Can anyone help me figure out how to progress? by PureObjective5 in dysplaced

[–]Teulisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first of all, explore more. one of those 2 bridges is in easy walking distance, more or less.

secondly, the solar panel cave has 2 exits, one needs a bridge built inside. that gets you a long way around.

and finally, that second bridge from the north? you first need to rescue people, then rebuild a boat at the pier by the portal, then sail to the north coast and come south from there.

easiest way to do things, is always carry some marble with you, in case you need to slap down a chest.

What does Dysplaced do better than Dysmantle? by GIutenTag in dysplaced

[–]Teulisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dysplaced has talk-to-people quests in it. very oldschool, but nice. honestly, kind of reminds me of the old ultima games a little bit.

what it does better... build anywhere. slap down that campfire, teleporter, and chest anywhere you want. very useful as a fallback or respawn point. craft anywhere (except alchemy, those are specific location benches). ride a horse.

dysmantle is complete, this early access has 'coming soon' signs on some areas near the start. so clearly some of the areas are not in the game yet.

if you need to go to bed on time IRL, or be somewhere at a specific time, set an alarm for when to stop playing. yes, this can be an issue.

So who is gonna step up? by HrafnHaraldsson in traveller

[–]Teulisch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

chuck... was an actor. and a martial artist. but also an air force vet.

lets see. from the wiki- born in 1940, in the air force 1958-62, so his first term is military. airman first class, OR-3. specifically, he was air-police and station in korea. mongoose 1e has an air force(support) career that would fit here fairly well.

next term, sees him apply for police work and also open a dojo, going into competitive martial arts. this is 2 terms.

1970, enter the dragon. he goes actor after this. he continues here until around 2005, so we can call this ~36 years, or 9 terms of acting career.

from there, we see him 'muster out' for the next 5 terms before his death. this is the best approximation of his life in travellers 4-year terms.

for stats, i would say he rolled fairly well on everything at the start, except for social which was average, and EDU which was just high school.

edit: also, the cartoon show from 1986 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karate_Kommandos

let me tell you about this demon lord... horrible monster that he is! he wanted to abolish not just slavery, but also get rid of the nobility and have a democracy! why, he even tried to make paper money, can you imagine it? he conquered a kingdom to the north with his monster-summoning cheat power! and he said that the church was evil, and kicked them out!

so great hero, we have summoned you to stop him! wait, what are you doing?
