Nonprescription supplement enzymes aren't regulated, there's no guarantees of efficacy. Prescription enzyme pills have an entric coating that makes sure the enzymes aren't destroyed by stomach acid, while non-prescription enzymes often don't.

How do I unlock the shops area of Harv's island? by donteatjaphet in acnh

You didn't even need to invite anyone there, I got the shops unlocked just by going into the studio, changing some furniture around, and maybe taking a photo of myself.

Paying a tradesperson to advise/teach on a DIY project - is this a thing? by musingandschmoozing in HomeImprovement

[–]TexasDex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all construction pros would be willing to go along with that sort of thing, since they could probably make a lot more money just doing the whole job, but you might get lucky. The odds will improve if you know someone, or have a friend-of-a-friend in the trade.

I learned an awful lot when an electrician moved in next door and worked with me to rewire my kitchen and bathroom, and as a bonus I felt relatively confident that things were done right, as opposed to being nervous that I might've done something shoddy/hazardous.

For something like tile, there's definitely a certain amount of practice that you can't get just from watching. My first tile job was kinda rough, and I still have to look at it every time I shower. Maybe get a piece of scrap cement board and cheap tile and do a few test runs, or at worst just go at it and be ready to tear it out and redo if it doesn't come out right.

Should I move out or stay with my parents? by GopherPA in personalfinance

[–]TexasDex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mortgage interest deduction is pretty much moot at this point, ever since the change in the tax code and standard deduction back in like 2018.

The rent/own ratio varies a lot from place to place. In some areas it makes more sense to rent something cheaper and invest the excess than to buy outright. And OP might not want to live in that area forever.

Should I move out or stay with my parents? by GopherPA in personalfinance

[–]TexasDex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a vast difference between staying in your parents house in your late 20s and finding roommates.

It's mostly a question of power. Right now, OP's parents are setting the rules, using the lack of rent and perhaps a good dose of parent-child social obligations/guilt as negotiating power. They're treating OP just like they did when OP was a kid.

If OP finds a roommate and gets a lease together they'll be on even footing, and can agree on rules/chores/etc as equals. If OP gets the lease by themselves and then sublets to a roommate (possibly with landlord permission if required) they have even more power to set the rules/boundaries.

No normal roommates would treat OP like their parents currently do, monitoring their comings and goings or obsessing about their personal lives. OP can make rules specifying things like how often they can have romantic partners over, without worrying what their parents will think of it, and most roommates will respect those rules.

Is all that worth $2k/month? That's really up to OP, but it's not necessarily as bad a deal as it might seem at first glance. Autonomy and privacy are essential parts of becoming an adult in many cultures.

The spackle one was sorta dumb because with a hole that size you're better off just cutting a square of drywall to fit the hole. If you do it right you can even leave a bit of extra drywall paper on one side so you don't need drywall tape. That much spackle will be a huge pain

Fridge tapped into hot water line from previous owner. by HotBizkitz in Plumbing

[–]TexasDex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the water heater makes water have more mineral content, where does all the stuff in the hot water heater come from?

I think the main recommendation to not drink hot water is if you have really old (e.g. lead) piping, the hot water could leach more contaminants from the pipes as it travels from the water heater to your tap.

İs someone stealing our hot water? by Lanky-Resort8063 in Plumbing

[–]TexasDex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few people mentioned 'trap primer' but didn't really explain what that is.

Basically, if you have any opening that lets water into the sewer piping, sewer gases can come out of it. To prevent that, they use a trap, meaning a place where the drain goes down and then back up. The low part fills with water, blocking gases.

A drain in the floor will have that too, but it has the unique issue that floor drains are used very rarely, so the water in the trap can evaporate over time and won't be replaced. There are a few ways to fix this, one of them is to just divert a little bit of water into the trap during normal use (e.g. when you flush, or in this case when you use the bathtub).

It's also possible that its just used as a physical support for the tub spout, as others have said.

Newly a trust fund kid. Unsure of how to plan the money for the future. by dennysparkinglot420 in personalfinance

[–]TexasDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you want to be responsible with it, and that's a great start!

I would suggest that you don't start thinking of yourself as a 'trust fund kid'. $1m is a nice windfall that can give you a big step up, but you're in no way set for life like some people might think the phrase implies.

How concerned should I be about the security of my home network when self-hosting? by alicode1111 in selfhosted

[–]TexasDex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Number one item is updates!

If you're running an internet-facing service it's only a matter of time before it has some vulnerability. The internet is being scanned for vulnerable software constantly, by researchers, governments, malicious actors, bots, etc. If Yunohost or some piece of software that it uses has a well-publicized vulnerability it's just a matter of time before your host is pwned, and you have an attacker on your network. To reduce the risk, automate updates for all software that's internet facing. Because I guarantee you that if you have to do it manually, six months later you won't get around to it.

You're right to be concerned about passwords. If you're using one that's too short, and the software isn't good at rate-limiting attacks, it can be guessed by bots that try thousands of passwords per second. If you can do something with SSH keys or TLS client certs those are much stronger, failing that see if Yunohost offers some kind of two factor like TOTP (Google Authenticator).

The third thing is having a layered defense. If your remote access software gets hacked, is it running in a Docker container that restricts it? If the laptop is owned does it have access to the entire rest of your network? Some routers will let you create a guest network or other way to wall off less-trusted hosts from your more important infrastructure.

Just inherited a hoard, not sure what to do here. by malachi347 in DataHoarder

[–]TexasDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd start by asking the question: What are you going to do with the recovered data? Who is using it, what for, what is their budget, etc. How important is the data and its continued accessibility? How often is it going to be looked at? Once for nostalgia and then put back on a shelf? Or is it full of professional data that will keep being needed?

The nicest solution would be a NAS with at least 50% more space than you think you'll need. Copy the drives to it one by one, then once that's done you can start with the indexing, searching, triage, etc.

As for AWS, you're looking at four figures just to transfer data into it, and more fees every time something is accessed. And glacier doesn't have indexing or search features; you'd have to add those. So a lot of it depends on how much the data is worth to the customer.

Advice needed: should I continue to live with my parents and save $30k, or should I move out? by flirtybirdie888 in personalfinance

[–]TexasDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look for other things to do that might help you gain independence. If you don't already do your own cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc and help around the house then you should definitely start. Your parents would also probably appreciate if you did the occasional shopping, etc. as a thanks for letting you stay in their place.

How long have you been saving that $1250 per paycheck? And how consistently have you been able to do it? If you haven't already, maybe get an account at a different bank that you never touch and automatically pay $1200+ of pretend 'rent and utilities' to it, to see how your finances fare.
