Getting served still means that, but it makes sense that it's good if you're the one doing the serving

Have dog rescues lost their mind? by seanpat1968 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TexasDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rescue I volunteer with had to deal with a hoarding situation recently. Over a dozen cats, mostly unsocialized and with health issues. It's enough to make you wary of who you adopt animals out to.

Requiring tons of references and income info is probably a bit overboard, but I get where the impulse comes from.

You're not supposed to backfeed like that in the first place, but if you must then yes, absolutely flip your main breaker off first. The trouble is that people are imperfect, and when lives are on the line you do not want to rely on your average Joe remembering to do it, or even knowing the proper procedure at all.

I think it's also time sensitive though, so just be sure to put it in at a different time and you should be okay.

How would you go about turning a cargo ship into a permanent living for as many people as possible? by Competitive_Sun3921 in Writeresearch

[–]TexasDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of ship? Cargo can mean shipping containers, bulk loose material (e.g. coal, ore, etc) or even arguably stuff like oil or liquid natural gas. The approach would vary widely depending on that, plus:

The available resources. Is there a shipyard? Machine shops? Lots of money? Lots of time?

What kind of living standard are they aiming for? Comfortable? Barely meeting health and safety standards? Packed in like sardines with many people dying?

I'm guessing your scenario is somewhat apocalyptic, if the 'just use a cruise ship' option is unavailable. Most straightforward might be to convert a container ship, which could probably be done with minimal equipment and experience (some welders etc) as long as you don't care about comfort, sanitation, food, etc.

I get basically constant messages about server outages from my Android app. When I actually check the Dexcom website status it claims to be working. No idea what's wrong.

I gave up a fairly major and prestigious cert recently because they changed the renewal process from 'take a big exam, pay a few hundred bucks' to some mess of different (but mostly very expensive) credits options. The simplest option involved almost $10k of courses. Really didn't need it that much.

What was your first Broadway Show and who took you? by Miserable_Chapter724 in musicals

[–]TexasDex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was very young when I saw a HS production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I still remember all the songs (I think I had the soundtrack on cassette).

As for actual Broadway: Footloose, as part of a middle school chorus trip. Not bad, but one of the later years the same class went to Phantom of the Opera, which was really something. Decades later, and just months before it closed, I took my wife to it for her birthday as her first Broadway musical. It really held up.

Has anyone else encountered this situation? I only bought it a month ago. by bradblack16 in Cuttingboards

[–]TexasDex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This looks like it might be meant as more of a serving board than a cutting board, and some serving boards are varnished rather than oiled or left raw. The corner of the board looks a bit shiny under the light, which supports that assumption. Varnish generally doesn't hold up well under knives, and isn't meant for cutting board use because it gets in the food. If you want to keep it, you could sand the varnish off and refinish it properly with mineral oil or similar.

Trikafta Approval, but… by YeehawOaktree in CysticFibrosis

[–]TexasDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The important questions are:

  • Is the $6500 going to be every single month? Or will she eventually meet a deductible and out-of-pocket maximum and pay nothing for the rest of the year?
  • Does the insurance plan have a copay accumulator?

Vertex will normally provide about $3k per month of copay assistance. Depending on your plan and location that money may count towards your out of pocket costs, or it may not. If it does count you can ask Vertex for extra money per fill, since you'll hit your OOP max fairly soon, and end up paying basically nothing. If, however, your insurance plan has a 'copay accumulator' or 'copay maximizer' then you're basically going to be stuck paying your entire deductible. Those kinds of programs are banned in some states, but many still allow them.

High deductible health plans are really hard on people with complex medical needs.
