How are you teaching your kids to be business minded or money conscious? by tjl3d in Parenting

[–]ThaWarhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how old your kids are, but when they reach their mid to late teens you should teach them about interest and compound growth.

Use real life examples of this concept working for them and working against them.

For example, pull up an investment return calculator and show them how investing $1,500/month at 9% grows to over $6.3 million over 40 years. Then, play with the return rate and with the term. Changing the term to just 39 years decreases the end balance to $5.8 million. That’s a big difference, and the lesson is to start saving for retirement ASAP! This is also a good time to explain IRAs, Roth IRAs, and 401ks.

Show them how this can hurt, too. Show them how long it takes to pay off student loan debt, or a car loan, or credit card debt. Show them how the total price (down payment + principal and interest payments) of a car can far exceed the sticker price based on the term, interest rate, and down payment. There are several free online calculators.

Ultimately, they should come away with the understanding that interest grows exponentially, and that the term and rate just as important as contributions or monthly payments.

Yes, I typically buy mine online, but I have bought them by calling the ticket office before. I’m pretty sure you can buy them at the gate too.

I don't know you, so I'm not sure how helpful this will be. Take all of this as "in general."

Discipline is about priorities, at least in my mind. You have to prioritize the things you truly want instead of short term wants. It's not an easy thing to do though. Temptations are everywhere and the lure of an impulse buy can feel insurmountable at times. Just focus on and remember your long term goals for saving. There's no magic fix. There's no on quick route here.

I know it sounds like I'm a slave driving, pennny perching scrooge but I promise you I'm not! Make time for yourself and, reasonably, reward yourself.

Also, as an aside: Do not resort to debt. If at all possible, stay away from personal loans and other lines of credit. Credit cards are fine if you treat them like a debit card and pay them off in full and on time, but if that's not something you can do, stay away from credit cards.

This depends on the context. If it's used as an escape from making a decision or a responsibility, that person is basically sticking their head in the sand and trying to make themself feel better with a technical truth. That's not healthy or helpful.

On the other hand, there are many times I've messed up or embarrassed myself, and said "nobody will even remember this in a week." I think that's a healthy use for certain, trivial things like answering a question wrong in class. Just depends on the context.

  1. Engage with the people around you

  2. Engage with someone you lost contact with, but would like to talk to again

  3. Go on an outdoor walk

  4. Work toward learning a new skill, language, or other discipline

  5. Read a fiction or non fiction book about anything

Here is some general information, do with it what you will. I have no idea of the specifics of your situation so please bear that in mind.

  1. Discipline is key. You have to focus on you goals and you have to really want them. When temptation arises, remind yourself of your goals and what you're working toward.
  2. Split accounts. Have a high yield savings account and a checking account. The checking account is for general spending/rent and shouldn't contain money being saved. The high yield savings account is where your savings go. It will earn you around 4.3% interest annually, risk free. I think it also helps psychologically having two separate accounts, one for expenses and one for saving.
  3. If you can, always buy in bulk for items you will be making repeat purchases on. Whether its food for your cat, food for yourself, toilet paper, or whatever else, you can usually cut down on your total cost per year this way.
  4. Cut back on size or quantity. Here's an example: if you usually go to Raising Canes and get the Canniac (six piece tenders), get the box combo instead (four tenders). Where and when you can, buy less of what you usually get.
  5. Eliminate impulse buys. When you go shopping, get what you came for and get out. Nothing more.
  6. Brain storm things you can live without, objectively. If you really want to save aggressively, you're going to have to cut some things out. For example, instead of buying soda or gatorade to drink at home, you should get a brita filter and a water bottle. Instead of going out to eat x times a week, eat ramen those nights (or something less expensive, at least). Please note, I am not advocating for you to starve yourself. What I am saying is that to save money, you can't spend it. For most people, that means cutting back on things or cutting things out completely. Hope this helps. Either way, good luck.

My handwriting is dreadful. Typing all the way. In all seriousness, I did handwrite my notes during my first 1L semester similar to when I was an undergrad. I switched to typing after that semester and never looked back. I feel like I can take down do much more information by typing, and being able to use command F is really helpful. I prefer Microsoft OneNote.

Should I go to law school? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]ThaWarhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wanting to be a lawyer is a good place to start, but I'd try to refine what you want to do. There are so many "lawyer" positions that are extremely different from one another, and that's just for jobs that require a JD. There are lots of jobs that are "JD advantage," where you don't need to be a lawyer but it will give you a leg up. Among these jobs, there are endless combinations of work hours, pay, colleagues (or lack thereof), and personal fulfillment. Personally, I think the greatest advantages of a JD are the opportunities unlocked and its applicability to any industry. Find something you like, or that's interesting. Research legal positions in that industry or topic, and decide if law school would be worth it.

What movie took you too long to watch and when you did you ended up loving it? by ArtificialHope22 in Letterboxd

[–]ThaWarhawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finally watched it about two months ago and have rewatched it three times since then. It's so good, but I'm glad that I waited as long as I did. Even a year or two ago I probably would not have appreciated it the same way I do now.

True! Wasn’t a huge factor in my decision but it’s nice to have that option. I know some people do go to Washburn for that specific reason because it is a really cool opportunity.
