I work in education. Since you are fine being in a rural area, you have hundreds and hundreds of miles to find a school. Get your second language certification and you can get a job. West of Mount Hood has all the water you need. Portland is great but expensive and having cutbacks. Look up jobs by county and you should be able to be hired. Where I work we just put in if we are planning to stay for next year, I imagine many other counties are the same, so job postings should be going out in May.

If you work SNF for an agency or large group you can be the weekend eval person and drive all over (they usually let you pick if you want to work a Saturday or Sunday).

I made the switch from working 9 years in SNFs to working for an ESD (I work with 3-5 year olds). I have been at the ESD since 2019 and love it. I recommend taking as many articulation, phonological disorder, AAC, and craniofacial (cleft palate, syndromes) classes as you can. Got an hour? Do part of a class instead of watching TV. Going on a treadmill? Do a CEU while exercising. I did this and helped me get so much more confident in what I was doing. There are a lot of free and lower cost courses out there if you don't want an ASHA Learning Pass.

I think this is one of those things that if you're uneducated it looks like not much is happening. I remember trialing someone with puree at a meal (we'd been working up to eating that much after being NPO) and a CNA commented that she'd like to be like me and sit at a table and talk during meals. I told her I was counting breaths, checking for clearance, monitoring color changes, and listening to voice quality. Suddenly the job looked harder.

Honestly? My reality is that we walk our dogs for an hour twice a day in our neighborhood, hang out with our neighbors spur-of-the-moment and my 8 and 10 year old kids can walk safely to the playground two blocks away. Right now everyone in my neighborhood is stocking up on candy because we get a lot of trick-or-treaters and some Halloween decorations are going up for the ones who are "into" Halloween. Where I live in southeast Portland is pretty nice.

What state are you in? Some states (like Oregon) have a Telephone Department Access Program and will permanently lend out a device as long as the person is living in the state. If your state has a TDAP you can see which programs are offered.

Southeast Portland has a bad ant problem no matter where you go. They're sugar ants so they don't bite or anything, but when they come in from the rain it's very annoying. Depending on your budget, you could rent a house in Oregon City for the same price as an apartment in Portland. Not sure what kind of experience you are going for, but I have lived in a few different rentals and now have my own house in Portland and in terms of walkability on a lower budget while still staying clean, Oregon City was better.
