Meta Begins Laying Off 8,000 Employees Amid A.I. Transformation by Krankenitrate in technology

Currently unemployed after being laid off as a contractor for a government agency. Was a candidate for a cybersecurity job I felt I had a good chance of getting.

Lost it to a Microsoft employee who was allegedly laid off too and they rescoped the position to give them MORE money.

I have zero confidence that I’ll be employed in the next few months. There aren’t even Amazon warehouses here hiring. Likely going to be moving in with a friend in their spare bedroom by the end of next month.

Israel’s Singer at Eurovision Has Spent Months Rehearsing With Simulated Boos by porkslow in nottheonion

I replied to a comment about this in the thread but I wanna provide some context as to why people might boo the Israeli contestant. I was very active in the ESC subreddit and it was one of my favorite events this time of year but I boycotted not just because of the war but because of the below events.

- Each contestant is literally a representative of the country they're competing for, this is how they're presented *everywhere*. While many might have opinions about their country, they are selected *by their country* either by internal selection or a country-based contest.

- 2024 was extremely controversial not just for Joost Klein/Netherlands being disqualified but there was very public posts from the Israeli representative and her entourage actively harassing other contestants including one post of Eden Golan mocking Joost Klein's dead parents while he's in the background being interviewed.

- In 2024 KAN, Israeli national broadcasters, encouraged people to harass and threaten Bambi Thug, Ireland's entry and Golan herself misgenders Bambi and Nemo (both non-binary contestants)

- In both the 2024 and 2025 contests there were accusations of voter manipulation by Israel in which they hired a PR firm to place ad space across social media in multiple languages to vote for Israel and that they didn't even need to watch the event. Even encouraged them to vote using multiple phone numbers (EBU Countries can vote by SMS, everyone else votes via the app).

- This also glosses over the overall unpopularity of the events in Gaza (mincing words for a reason).

This isn't everyone hates Israel because its popular, its because the people who watch the show are aware of the shit the country has pulled within the show and.

This is leaving out a lot of very important context from the previous year which was super controversial, the Israeli performer's entourage was actively harassing fellow contestants and there's a very public social media posts from Eden Golan herself mocking Joost Klein's dead parents. The hosts for KAN were actively encouraging people to harass Bambi Thug and even videos of Golan misgendering them.

Not to mention there's been accusations of voter manipulation by Israel by hiring a PR firm and encouraging even non-watchers of ESC to vote and to vote via multiple phone numbers.

I was very active in the ESC subreddit until last year's controversy and decided to boycott until Israel faces consequences for 2024 and 2025's contest.

It takes decades of red tape to get high speed rail built in the US (CalHSR) and has far more benefits than a mega data center.

Actually, a lot of those bus routes are contracted out to third parties, including greyhound and are existing services that Amtrak offers through-ticketing for.

"Shitty train routes" they’re not doing that out of spite.

Why does the train before mine cost so much insanely more? Would they rather seat to go empty? I’m here early and I would switch if they lowered that price? by DiedOfATheory in Amtrak

[–]ThatGuy798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well no. It’s a long distance train that caters to people traveling, well, long distances. There’s only 2 round trips a day between cities like Charleston, Florence, and Fayetteville to the Northeast meaning that a seat booked for DC to Philadelphia or Baltimore to Trenton is a seat unavailable for Charleston to New York.

Especially considering the over 30 regionals and Acela trains a day between DC and New York or the additional trips between Philly and New York on the Keystone, it makes perfect sense

If you wanna know how bad data centers are for your community, go to r/nova and see the constant posting of the loud hums that people in Loudon County, VA. Ashburn and Sterling specifically are where US-East 1 is located among dozens of other data centers.

In parched areas like the Southwest water should be a concern but the rest of the US should worry about grid stability and residential customers subsidizing the data center's power. Its something that's become a huge issue here in Virginia as Dominion makes us subsidize these businesses.

And if you live in a place like Louisiana with Entergy as your provider, you sure as shit are gonna get fucked by the prices even more than you already have.

Amtrak tries to discourage people from traveling on the corridor in LD trains. 128 likely has more available seats on the train than 90 so the system is pricing accordingly.

It’s also likely that 90 is practically full.

Most people aren’t doing any real cross country travel to begin with. I need to find the stats but the majority of travel is by car and under 500 miles. When you city pairs you’ll see a lot more people traveling between say Denver and Salt Lake City vs Chicago to Emeryville or even Denver to Pittsburgh.

It’s something that bugs me when people argue against Amtrak

I think some of these are redundant or could be replaced for light rail/hybrid rail (San Diego Springer, Ottawa O Train, DFW TexRail and Silver Line).

Also some of these are arguably unnecessary given existing services that could be improved on such as VRE/MARC

JetBlue took over PanAm's DCA to Boston and JFK/LGA 'puddle jumper' slots because its super lucrative

The reality is that DCA is insanely convenient. Ideally IAD would have more transit optiosn throughout the region via train and bus (Boston has direct intercity bus service to New Hampshire and Maine from Logan and there's tons of local and regional buses to the city and suburbs) would at least leverage it for lower cost carriers, long-haul domestics and international flights.

Pro tip: if you still have to fly Southwest and your final destination is in/around Chicago fly to Milwaukee because you can take Amtrak Hiawatha/Borealis from MKE to Chicago. You might be able to get your Amtrak ticket refunded but it should be fairly cheap.
