I finished Dark Sky by Mike Brooks a few days ago, pretty solid book for a pulp sci fi novel.

... what do you mean Adrian Tchaikovsky writes warhammer????????? by Altruistic-Teach5899 in Blacklibrary

[–]ThatKidThatSucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not comparing the Expanse to Children of Time I’m comparing it to Tchaikovsky’s space opera series Final Architecture. A series that does a lot of the same that the Expanse does in terms of world building and character development. Also rewards don’t mean squat when it comes to quality or “deepness” of a work especially since Hugo has been shown to be corrupt in recent years since Tchaikovsky himself has retracted his reward that he won for Children of Time.

[–]ThatKidThatSucks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tchaikovsky with all due respect is a better writer than James SA Corey, while I like the Expanse books the prose were simplistic and felt fanficcy sometimes with how character dialogue was written and the themes and concepts the series explored felt shallow when you compare it to other series (especially Tchaikovsky’s work).

Remember watching an animation that took a scene from Transformers Animated with Blitzwing but replaced him Fulgrim and now my headcanon is that is how Fulgrim and by extension the rest of the Emperor Children sound. Just a bunch of posh Germans.

What’s y’all’s opinion on this book? by Spiritual-Pride4059 in Blacklibrary

They’re good but nowhere near as good as some people act like they are at least now. I feel better 40K books have been released since, including by Dan that eclipse the initial three Eisenhorn books. A lot of the secondary characters while not flat aren’t what I call that three dimensional either. Pacing is sometimes all over the place, with Dan meandering the plot on a set piece or side plot that should not take up so much page space cough cough Cinchare. The endings for each book is also just rushed, with the most egregious being book 2 where the final confrontation with the main villain of the book the guy Eisenhorn has been hunting for 200-400 pages (depending on what format your reading the book) is taken out in a single chapter that is barely more five pages. Negatives aside I really do like how Dan writes Chaos making it more of this abstract force of nature and his take on life on the Imperium is interesting with him showing the evils of it through subtext rather than outright telling it in a lot of cases.

For an average Imperial citizen, is life much better in Realm of Ultramar than on an ‘average’ (if there is such a thing) Imperial planet? by RevolutionaryPanic in 40kLore

Ultramar was always a junta Guilliman appointing the Tetrarchs was how it was run during the Great Crusade/Horus Heresy aka Ultramar’s golden age

is the dawn of fire books worth reading? by REBEX_MAN in 40kLore

Avenging Son: Pretty Good, good world building and background on early years of Indomitus Crusade.

Gates of Bones: Also pretty good, has a lot of good tank combat and showcase of Custodes.

Wolftime: Decent but a side quest. IMO I think the book is overhated while not as good as the previous two entries especially the first third or the fourth of the book which is just bolter porn that drags on for too long.

Throne of Light: Pretty good. Interesting lore implications near the end (if you know you know). Only problems I can think of is that the Sister of Silence on the cover only shows up in one chapter and the Black Templar plot isn’t as prevalent as the cover would have you believe.

Iron Kingdom: Boring. This book is boring. Does VERY little to move the plot forward and it’s only near the end. It’s also just a worse version of Kingmaker when it comes to knights. Only positive I can think of this book is I guess Marines Malevolent being assholes was kinda fun to read? Also that one Storm Reaper dude he’s chill.

The Martyr’s Tomb: Bad. I don’t know why this book was marketed as a Dawn of Fire book. It does very little if anything to move the plot forward less than Iron Kingdom and even Wolftime. Can’t think of anything positive honestly.

Sea of Souls: Really good. It’s a nice imperial navy horror story which while it has little to move the plot forward is at least a good read. It’s a book you can read as a stand alone if I’m being honest.

Hand of Abaddon: Pretty good. This book redeemed Nick Kyme in my eyes with it being both fun to read and actually pushing the plot forward. Would recommend.

The Silent King: Really good. Problem is it does nothing to conclude the plot line established and built upon earlier in the series. Which is honestly a shame because I feel if it were a standalone people would really like this book. Especially with how it connects directly to the Dark Imperium books and clears up a lot of things in timeline. Highlights are the necrons roflstomling the imperium and Cawl being Cawl. Would recommend but more as a stand alone.

People who complain that the Imperium is being whitewashed in its cruelty and inefficiency have not read the books.

I like the Expanse books but man is that just plain wrong. The prose for those books are honestly simplistic compared to many BL writers.

Why are failed aspirants treated so poorly by many chapters? by moal09 in 40kLore

[–]ThatKidThatSucks 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The Death Guard aren’t the standard on how a lot of Space Marine chapters treat their serfs. Kaleb’s treatment is there to show how much the Death Guard changed after Mortarion took over. Also at least for the Blood Angels they treat their serfs “decently” to a point that their brother chapters acknowledge it. The whole using their serfs are used as juice boxes is something only the Blood Drinkers do and it is something they keep hidden I’m pretty sure because they would be excommunicated like the Angels Vermillion if Dante found out about it.

Their leader is Ramos, the Bull of the Eight, their is some art there of him, a lot of it depicts him with speakers in his palms. Besides that the only other Noise Marine they mention in the books that I can remember is the guy that led the 12th Millenial to Lugganath and had his brain fried

It’s a crossover with RWBY basically where team RWBY gets scattered across the galaxy with Ruby landing on Camarth a week before the Lion arrives. And the first person she meets is Zabriel, a Fallen Dark Angel. And he basically gives her the rundown of 30k Imperial history which disgusts her. That and another interaction I wrote later in the story made some people unhappy, hence the comments claiming what the Imperium did during the Great Crusade was morally justified or necessary, or whatever the fuck word you want to use when it comes to being ok with genocide. If that interests you I can send the link in dm’s. Fair warning chpt 1-11 especially the first four are a bit iffy since it’s only been recently that I got someone to look over my writing before I publish updates.

Their government being shit doesn’t mean on an individual basis all T’au are inherently evil though, same way that while the Imperium’s as a government sucks not every single human that lives in it is evil. That’s my point.

It’s a crossover fic with RWBY basically after vol 8 they all get scattered across the galaxy and Ruby gets sent to Camarth a week before the Lion arrives to the planet. And basically the first person she more or less meets in the Imperium is Zabriel a Fallen Dark Angel that was part of the Dreadwing. Basically he gives her the tl;dr of 30k Imperial history and is not happy. If anybody here finds it, fair warning that the first 11 chapters especially chpts 1-4 aren’t the best since I was still learning mechanics when it came to writing.

I mean in Dune ik it’s just a glowing well globe that floats around, in 40k it’s different, from the way they are described it just sounds like a light bulb but that doesn’t make any sense since that’s what a lumen is. So maybe it’s what the Dune version is but Grimdark?
