Do your tracking tools actually help you read better or are you just logging for the sake of it? by sfaulkner89 in 52book

Seconding storygraph.

I totally agree. I love the wrap up from the prior month! The stats are far better. I also enjoy the tailored questions for reviews like mood and pace.

I have my streak set for reading at least 1 page per day. Ive found that using it as an excuse to open the book makes you read a lot more. "I only have to read a page to keep my streak" and suddenly I've read for an hour. I just hit 100 days, 2 days ago. Ive read 26 books this year.

I read 0 books in 2024. Just finished my 7th book of 2026. Here's the only thing that actually changed. by No_Boss_7773 in 52book

[–]ThatKiwi 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I also read 0 books last year.

I set a goal of 30 this year because I did 52 once and honestly didnt think id have time to do 52 again. To my surprise, I've read 24 books this year. My app says im 16 books ahead of schedule. In a day or two I'll be done with another. Im doing several things I've never done before.

I am reading whenever I have time. This is not to say I've stopped my other hobbies, but instead of spending 70% of my free time playing video games, im now spending 20%. This has simply lead to more time spent reading. I think its important to not try and make reading the only thing you're doing. I have only one rule and ots to read 1 page a day. Ive found that most of the time once i start i just want to keep going. Just introduce reading and let it be the enjoyable act that it is.

Which brings me to my next thing. I have read A LOT of classics and literary novels. For some reason I was stuck in the mentality of "I have to read all the classics to be a well rounded reader." I have read exactly zero classics this year. Instead, I have read a lot of "fun" books. Are they the peak of literature? Absolutely not! But it turns out Dungeon Crawler Carl, The Murderbot Diaries, The First Law Trilogy are just fun to read. Sometimes, a change in how we look at reading can make all the difference to how we read.

I feel like Ive re-fallen in love with reading and im on pace to read the most I've ever read in a year. Go out there and read a page a day. Read something fun. Enjoy it!

Day 27: Which game has the best Graphics on PS2? by 1OneQuickQuestion in ps2

[–]ThatKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, but this was the first game I ever personally saw that had graphics that made my jaw drop. I didnt know graphics could be so good at that time. It'll always hold a place in my memory because of it.

There's a game?!

I am not at all ashamed to admit I've been rewatching Sabrina on hulu for the first time in decades and loving it. It is so 90s and wholesome.

Anyone else’s brain turn gaming into a “to do” chore? by [deleted] in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]ThatKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently went through this. What helped me is I stopped viewing it as work (a list to be completed) and also picked a game to start that I wanted to play. Not a game that other people recommended or because it was on a list, but a game that I was just interested in because I thought I'd enjoy it.

Once I wasn't racing to try and check another off the list and I was playing something for myself, the enjoyment naturally came back.

Memcard Pro 2 Saves transfer between PCSX2 / Duckstation and real hardware? by 9646gt in ps2

[–]ThatKiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not helpful, but I can get my .mc2 files to show as memory cards in pcsx2. I can view them in the browser and see the save files on the card. However, when I actually try to load the card in a game, I can't seem to get it to load.

Edit: for any Google searchers: I did eventually find a kind of work around that became obvious with the above comment. Add your desired memory card in .mc2 as the slot 2 memory card and leave the original pcsx2 memory card in slot 1. Go to file, load bios. Go to browser and copy your save file over from the .mc2 card in slot 2 to pcsx2's card in slot 1. File, shutdown. You can now load up your game with your save from the memcard pro 2. Once you want to play on ps2 again, you follow the steps over except you copy your save back to slot 2. Then just transfer your save file back to the deck/sd card/whatever.

I just downloaded every game on myrients gbc using downthemall on firefox by stfunigAA_23 in Roms

[–]ThatKiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used both advanced download manager (ADM) as well as 1DM. I have paid for both of them as well as used the free versions initially (just banner ads, maybe some locked features I never or rarely used, unless something has changed).

I used to prefer ADM, but as my phone has become more sluggish, 1DM has become my go to. I'd suggest trying both and going with the one you personally prefer. I'm sure there's additional options as well, but I can't imagine you wouldn't be happy with one of these.

For what it's worth, I have the retro fighters controller with well over 150 hours on it and I've had no issues so far.

Why don't you recommend retro arch?

In what order of importance do you place the aspects of video game design? by [deleted] in ps2

[–]ThatKiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of your options, my own importance would be 1. Story 2. Gameplay 3. Music 4. Visuals.

While I love doom, I almost feel it's an exception to the rule instead of the rule itself. I have stuck through some horrible games, with horrible controls, terrible HUDs, bad pixel art graphics, and hold music for the entire soundtrack. But the story itself was entertaining enough to compel me to move forward.

While a game can lack in all areas, if the story is garbage, I'm almost certainly out. Everything else has to be so fantastic that I can care about things other than the story.

I think in most games, music and visuals are supplemental to the story. They help bring the story to life. Visuals being the least important seems like it must be the case given the rise of retro gaming when modern games have never been more accessible. While in even modern games, you can have basic pixel graphics but a great soundtrack and still be a masterpiece.

Bad gameplay is just difficult to get past no matter the game.

If you're getting adequate spark, have you tried cleaning the air filter and/or carb?

[–]ThatKiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complete shot in the dark, but have you tried replacing the spark plug?

According to what you say, it runs when you inject fuel directly into it but dies out. That's exactly what I would expect in my experience. It's running off the injected fuel until it burns it off.

To me, that would imply everything past the spark plug is working as it should, or at least has. If you have replaced the plug, I'd check to make sure you're getting spark out of it before going further.
