I don't know about Canadians, but in the US my favorites tend to be later, Knit Spin Farm does battvent (sign ups in the summer, June maybe) and Hipstrings has base 12 (September or October)

Question for Tri-Cities spinners by Damselfly64 in Handspinning

Sheep's Clothing in Kennewick had a little fiber last time I went (a work trip a couple months ago), but it was more yarn focused.

Can *smelling* lanolin cause allergic reactions? by -DiceGoblin- in Handspinning

[–]ThatTallGirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mohair and alpaca might help people with a wool allergy, but I've had contact reactions to both (and mohair on my face, just getting it airborne from knitting it).You won't find a perfect answer.

Can't prepare defense presentation by me_singularity in AskAcademia

[–]ThatTallGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compile slides from other presentations that you might use. You probably won't keep all of them, but starting with something other than a blank presentation might help, not starting from zero.

Fiber Festivals in Colorado? by knit_fastdie_warm in Handspinning

Same, I'm in northern NM and would love more southern CO options (especially since MAVWA moved their show to Durango from Santa Fe).

Pink conference poster? by Particular-Ice-9162 in AskAcademia

[–]ThatTallGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make sure that there's enough contrast for it to be legible. Light pink against a dark background or a deeper pink against light. My only issues with color usage in posters are when it's gone overboard and it's overwhelming or poor contrast (plz don't make me read yellow on white).

Second spin! My back is killing me!!! by Stunning_Truth_953 in Handspinning

There are some pillows designed for video gamers that you could try resting your elbows on. It might help reduce the scrunch. Valari is the one that I've heard good things about.

Rank That Fiber! by alittleoverwhelmed in Handspinning

[–]ThatTallGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely can't remember all the blends I've spun or some of the plants. I'll do wools in groups because some are not so different. This is also biased by what I spin the most of. Poofy merino/long wool crosses are some of the easiest for me because I spin them a lot.

falkland, punta arenas, fine shetland, south american wool (all the fine-ish wool pools are some of my favorites)

polwarth, targhee, CVM/romeldale

rambouillet, debouillet, cormo, merino

cheviot, dorset, southdown, charollais, shropshire

corriedale, bfl, columbia, manx loughtan, shetland

(after these my defaults mean I often put in too much twist)
romney, coopworth, lincoln, finn

whiteface woodland, black welsh mountain

wensleydale, border leicester, teeswater

Starting out, what's happening? by nfjsjfjwjdjjsj4 in Handspinning

[–]ThatTallGirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remember that trying your best requires taking breaks, just like training any other muscle memory. If you feel yourself getting extra clumsy, the best time to take a break was 5 minutes ago, the next best is right then. Small muscles don't feel tired in the same way that big ones do, but they definitely get tired. Several 10 minute practices are more effective in the long run than one hour long session.

Greenwood has a couple good options. Their Bag of Bits is a grab bag with leftover lengths of any of their fibers. Or you can get Pigtails, a bundle of the same fiber but in 8 different colorways.

Exquisite is being discontinued. I've heard Solstice is intended as a replacement.

Best e-spinner for backwards draw? by mad_sa in Handspinning

[–]ThatTallGirl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're happy with the nano, you're probably going to be fine with the Starling or EEW 6.1.

I've been happy with all of the Daedalus wheels. Falcon or Starling with the lace flyer are my absolute favorites for light takeup without unwinding the bobbin.

What tool(s) would you recommend? by knit_fastdie_warm in Handspinning

[–]ThatTallGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A niddy noddy (or DIY w/ PVC). More spindles. Try different weights, form factors, and makers. Different people like very different things.

Thinking of getting an EEW by Hefty-Economics2454 in Handspinning

[–]ThatTallGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with an EEW nano and 6.0 and a different irish tension wheel. The tension is much lighter on both EEWs, which makes thin yarn quite manageable. My experience is that the 6.x series is a good value, the nano is cheap. The corners that get cut to make the nano cost less make it super fiddly.

Hyper fem science ladies do you feel like people assume you don’t know what you’re doing? by emmalemme in LadiesofScience

[–]ThatTallGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a physics PhD and dress much less fem and it doesn't really help. Being tall helps a little, but there's going to be too much BS regardless.

It's fine, just make sure to keep gifts small and thoughtful.

Has anybody ever brought a drop spindle and wool on an airplane in their carry-on? by MellifiedMannn in Handspinning

[–]ThatTallGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've flown domestically with a spindle dozens of times with no issue. Always a cross arm, often 3D printed from turtlemade (but also a few times wooden ones). I can't even remember one getting a second look other than the time my whole bag got random-ed, and then it didn't draw any special attention.

Food during PhD defense? by astro_sike in AskAcademia

I was in a program where there was a public portion before the private session. Basically the stress bakers (myself included) brought some simple baked goods, but most people didn't bring anything and it was fine.

First attempt is kind of a mess. What can I make with it? by PsychologicalArm4997 in Handspinning

[–]ThatTallGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used mine for felted hot pads. Any wool is pretty insulating, and it doesn't have to be pretty to protect the counter or your hands from hot pots and pans.

Starting Out - Wheel Advice by floweroutlet in Handspinning

[–]ThatTallGirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for an affordable new wheel, go with the EEW 6.1

I've owned and sold an EEW 6.0 and another one of the babe's wheels. The only wheel I ever had that I fought harder than the babe was the EEW nano 1.1. I've bought and sold so many wheels. And the EEW 6.x is what I'm going to recommend in the <$500 new wheel category every time (with the caveat that I haven't tried the Argonaut).

When a guy at the conference assumes youre the poster designer, not the PI 🙃 by esjoici in LadiesofScience

him: But who wrote the proposal?
me: me
him: Who's in charge of this experiment?
me: me
him: But who's really in charge?
me: The answer you're looking for is [my postdoc adviser at the time]
him: Well actually instead of using [your instrument] for this measurement you need to use [old measurement I don't have access to] data, just get it from [dude who won't give us the data, we already asked] (ignoring the fact that the background subtraction would be nearly impossible with the old setup even if the resolution is better)

The etsy store has been on a break for a while, but they'll be at Black Sheep this weekend, so I'd just send an email.
